As in actually watched it and didn’t just doom scroll the commentary? It was bold and honest and pragmatic and actually made me hopeful that we have someone at the helm with a vision for a better tomorrow who has Britain’s best interests at heart.

The National Care Service is a masterstroke, paid for out of scrapping the triple lock and the very real savings of reducing NHS bills on A&E and hospital beds for elderly who should be in care but have nowhere to go.

Scrapping right to buy and increasing council control of housing, boosting the technical education track for young people, pushing renewables, nuclear and energy sovereignty, public control of key utilities for water to get bills down and reduce pollution, investing in people & getting them back to work, leasehold reform by Christmas and everyone’s energy bill will be reduced by fast tracking decoupling energy prices from global gas pricing and by having no VAT on energy bills by TOMORROW!

You can watch the whole thing here and be directly informed instead of getting your perspective filtered through all the bots and misinformation peddlers online m.youtube.com/watch?v=jyjTT_55Gi0

did anyone else not realise that it’s only care in your own home that’ll be covered by this Care Service? Residential care homes still need to be paid for by the user

My understanding is actually that personal care will be free at the point of use everywhere - either at home or in residential care - but that people in residential homes will still pay for their accommodation and living costs. So, similar to the Scottish approach. I think all the real detail will come after the Casey review though - that’s when the costings etc will come too.

This was a big philosophy speech, not a detailed announcement of policy - but TBF that’s what conference speeches always are (they’re just not normally as big and bold about it as this one!)

Well add that to the triple lock saving which is by 2050 anywhere between £11 to £30 Billion a year in today's money.

20p and half a crunchie is a lot by 2050 because it’s 24 years away. Christ.

danglythedingle · Yesterday 22:40

sounded great, saying it is one thing, actually getting it done is another.

I am so impressed with him. I just wish he’d change his stance on assisted dying.

He is a Catholic born and bred, so he won't (I guess)

Basically, we lose the triple lock and gain having someone to come round once a month and cut out toenails for free?

If the care delivered was better then more people could stay in their own home. It’s the 15 minute visits by different people every time, on minimum wage with no training that makes it impossible for many.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · Yesterday 22:48

Such an impressive speech. I really really hope they can get the economy to a place that allows him to crack on with this stuff.

I was particularly pleased by his comments about the UK union and a fresh discussion about the clusterfuck that is Brexit.

He’s worse than Starmer which is not something I thought was possible.

If he stays in office until 2029 I fear we’ll be past the point of no return.

The lack of talent and experience in this government is frightening.

💯 We need a GE as a matter of urgency.

Giraffehaver · Yesterday 22:50

I was so overwhelmed by his politics being aligned with mine that I cried! First time in my life that I can vote for a party I truly believe are going in the right direction

I agree with this. Better quality care from properly paid carers has the potential to keep so many more people in their own homes for much longer than is possible under the current system.

I completely understand people’s cynicism: we’ve been stuck in this cycle of short term, divisive, populist politics for so long, it’s made me cynical myself. But if the Prime Minister is able to pull off what he’s talking about - and it’s a really big if - then I think it could be genuinely transformative.

He’s brilliant at speaking. I just hope he’s as good at being our PM.

If you hold out for a few minutes of introduction about family he does move pretty quickly to announcements! The speech was a masterclass in communication generally, starting with a lot of “10 year plans” and then just when I was starting to think “hmm this is a lot of 10 year plans…” he says “but I know that many are struggling right now and need to see change soon, which is why there will be no VAT on energy bills from Thursday” 👏👏👏👏.

I also enjoyed how he called out, by first name, each minister who will be spearheading the various projects as he announced them, a very inclusive teamwork style of leadership.

Okay, I hung in a few more minutes, and I think you and I just respond very differently to communication styles.

I'm glad you're feeling positive about it. And I do think this is less bad than it otherwise could be.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Yesterday 22:58

It was a brilliant speech and I imagine that there will be quite a few rattled Tories and Reform party supporters right now.

He is a great communicator and he has both courage and vision. Let's hope that he is also capable of delivering.

Bring them in on luxurious coaches, with a police escort. He has also made a deal with the Waldorf and the Savoy to house them there.

Willowskyblue · Yesterday 23:08

I think his intentions are good, and refreshing compared with his predecessors, but the country has no money and even removing the triple lock will be a tiny contribution to all his plans. None of it is economically credible given the state we’re in now, with the impact of the US-Iran war only really starting to be felt.

I loved the fact that Burnham focused on his own agenda for the country, and not Nigel Farage's.

It's time for Labour to stop trying to pander to the racists and the xenophobes. We don't need to pretend that they matter.

Agreed. Let the Tories try for that crowd.

Fuck my life. Anyone with any basic maths or economics can tell you that moving from a triple lock to a double lock (with caveat to still raise to triple rate in certain circumstance - yes this isn’t a BIG BOLD change) will NOT fund a National Care Service free at the point of service for everyone. It’s depressing that there are people out there that think it will.

I don't believe anyone thinks one will fund the other,'but it will contribute and is a significant contribution. It is a step in the right direction.

Net migration has decreased significantly under Labour.
His speech was excellent. I now have hope that this is the man with a long term plan that will benefit the masses. I haven't felt this hopeful in a very long time.

Yeah he keeps saying net migration is down. Whats he going to do about all those whose claims have been denied and they havent been removed?
