To ask if you watched Andy Burnham’s bloody good speech?

As in actually watched it and didn’t just doom scroll the commentary? It was bold and honest and pragmatic and actually made me hopeful that we have someone at the helm with a vision for a better tomorrow who has Britain’s best interests at heart.

The National Care Service is a masterstroke, paid for out of scrapping the triple lock and the very real savings of reducing NHS bills on A&E and hospital beds for elderly who should be in care but have nowhere to go.

Scrapping right to buy and increasing council control of housing, boosting the technical education track for young people, pushing renewables, nuclear and energy sovereignty, public control of key utilities for water to get bills down and reduce pollution, investing in people & getting them back to work, leasehold reform by Christmas and everyone’s energy bill will be reduced by fast tracking decoupling energy prices from global gas pricing and by having no VAT on energy bills by TOMORROW!

You can watch the whole thing here and be directly informed instead of getting your perspective filtered through all the bots and misinformation peddlers online m.youtube.com/watch?v=jyjTT_55Gi0

You didn’t. You said Even Reform ran on getting rid of Starmer. So that has happened.

All I can say is that they went about it a very strange way by standing a misogynist who singlehanded turned off just about every woman with a vote.

I dunno, I reckon that would be a pretty good strategy if you were trying to alienate people?

They're hardly representative of the country as a whole.

You seemed happy with it below with the emoji. Ouch though at that 60% combined.

That is high.

Not high enough. Remember Burnham’s vote share? 55%.

I thought it was pretty obvious from my post that I was happy with the idiots on the right splitting the vote to result in a Labour win.

If the 60% right leaning trend was reflected nationally, I would be concerned, but it isn't.

I guess you might not have seen the humour in a vote where a left wing candidate is elected despite 60% of the electorate being right leaning. I found it quite amusing.

If you’re happy with it great, up to you.

Looking at council by-elections since May the dial hasn’t shifted much, which is interesting given the Burnham bounce.

Of course I'm happy that the right have defeated themselves through their own stupidity.

As for shifting the dial, were you expecting it to happen overnight? Because I wasn't.

BermudaRhombus · Yesterday 15:50

It’s less of a “Burnham Bounce” and more of a “Starmer has Gone” bounce. It will dissipate rapidly. By the next election we’ll be on our absolute knees.

I've found it, and shared the link above for anyone else interested - thank-you! Really interesting - although given my own response to the speech, it doesn't surprise me.

(You've actually done me a double favour, because I looked up Politics Home and it came up on Media Bias Fact Check as very low-biased, so, having had my interest and enthusiasm for politics somewhat re-ignited, I might start reading it more often, as I do find it hard to know where to look for genuinely non-partisan political reporting these days).

Yes, it's a good source. Independent and centrist. The only suggestion of compromised independence came many years ago when Lord Ashcroft was a part owner. However that's no longer the case.

That article - I’ll win the next election. Then, I never lose a fight. Posters said yeh to that too ;

Meanwhile, Burnham’s mettle is yet to be tested.

Will be interesting to see how he behaves under a bit of pressure. Saying warm and fuzzy things to keep the left on side will only carry him so far.

The rubber will hit the road soon enough, probably on or after the 28th October.

A ‘dead cat’ bounce, if you prefer.

No offence intended to another long running feline/miscellaneous/politics thread.

No, no - quite right.

First, the buses - then the UK economy/defense etc.

Priorities.

Its not about keeping the left on side. It's about enough of the electorate being brought on side. Which he has done an excellent job of as the reactions show.
As for being under pressure, are you seriously suggesting that anyone leading this country at the moment isn't under tremendous pressure already? He's got a huge mess to sort out, with an impatient electorate wanting quick fixes for issues that have defeated subsequent administrations for decades, and that's without the context of a volatile international situation.
If you want to see him under pressure, watch the speech.

You’re focusing on reactions from people who watched his speech. They’re fairly amenable already to spend time engaging with a Labour conference speech.

Then there’s votes, and council by-elections don’t see a bounce. Maybe it’ll change who knows. But it’s all changeable, he could lose the bounce / shine too and Reform could go up.

They're hoping that they can make him fail by the strength of their will.

More eager to see Labour fail than to see the country and its people thrive.

It’s a discussion, not everyone has the same view of course as it’s a public site, you want Labour to win. Sometimes you’ll see not everyone feels that way.

I think there is an inverse correlation….

Erm, I know. I am well aware that, for some people, seeing Labour fail is the absolute top priority.

I don't think I have suggested that people shouldn't be allowed to prioritise Labour doing badly above all else. People are free to want whatever they want.

My observation that they seem to care more about Labour failing than the country succeeding does not prevent anyone from holding those views.

Your framing is off. Not everyone thinks Labour are great as you do. That’s life and on an open forum people will post as such. I agree with @BermudaRhombusit’s more about relief over Starmer going.

He wants to look at the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre next. Then maybe the economy and defence (but only if there’s time).

I don’t see it as the electorate.

The budget, yes. Gilts, yes. Inflation, yes. Perhaps, an act of terrorism, or a hybrid attack - where Labour’s unwillingness to fund defence, is shown up.
