To ask if you watched Andy Burnham’s bloody good speech?

As in actually watched it and didn’t just doom scroll the commentary? It was bold and honest and pragmatic and actually made me hopeful that we have someone at the helm with a vision for a better tomorrow who has Britain’s best interests at heart.

The National Care Service is a masterstroke, paid for out of scrapping the triple lock and the very real savings of reducing NHS bills on A&E and hospital beds for elderly who should be in care but have nowhere to go.

Scrapping right to buy and increasing council control of housing, boosting the technical education track for young people, pushing renewables, nuclear and energy sovereignty, public control of key utilities for water to get bills down and reduce pollution, investing in people & getting them back to work, leasehold reform by Christmas and everyone’s energy bill will be reduced by fast tracking decoupling energy prices from global gas pricing and by having no VAT on energy bills by TOMORROW!

You can watch the whole thing here and be directly informed instead of getting your perspective filtered through all the bots and misinformation peddlers online m.youtube.com/watch?v=jyjTT_55Gi0

Personally I have decided it is a good thing for EU bureaucrats to legislate for us. From what I have seen in the last 10 years we aren’t able to rationally legislate or get sensible shit down anymore anyway. So delegate it and start growing economically again or it will simply a matter of years of pointless infighting over petty identity and cultural wars and blaming and shaming. It is so dull and unproductive.

But this isn’t happening for Germany, and France is struggling. Plus the EU still has the migration issue to deal with.

NorthXNorthWest · 01/10/2026 21:28

That wasn't the speech I listened to.

Imdunfer · 01/10/2026 21:17

Delegate it and start growing

Have you looked at the growth levels in the big EU countries?

We're above the Eurozone average and seeing better growth than Germany and France aren't we?

Presumably you're not competing for a job at a hand car wash?

Oh dear your own predudiced views are shining like a beacon. You do realise migrants work in all industries don't you and that is what is being responded to 'net migration'.

In such a rush to be the tipex you've tripped up on your own stereotypes! Whoopsy

bestchooseanother · 01/10/2026 21:48

Was going to bother writing a response but I very much doubt all you girls swooning at his performance are going to bother to listen to any critique, so felt it was hardly worth contributing really.

So I decided The Economist could do it for me: Andy Burnham, faux heretic

He's a hateful, divisive, bitter little charlatan. He's more populist than Trump, and has so far demonstrated even fewer morals. Even Trump never tried bawling his eyes out on stage 🙄 But hey - seems to be working, so go him I guess.

They limped in simply through a quirk of FPTP. Nobody really wanted them and now we have a PM who essentially bulldozed his way in. He really should call a GE if he had a set.

Limped in? 🤣

It’s fine to fundamentally disagree and oppose them, but what is the value of writing utter BS like that?

Imdunfer · 01/10/2026 21:19

He was used by the left as a Trojan horse to get Labour MPs elected, to be removed and replaced with a Corbynite leader who would not at the time have been able to deliver a landslide because of the fears of centre and centre right right voters.

yup the rebound boyfriend....the one your parents sigh with relief when you bring him home after the previous mistake...not weird....not to far left or right... right background....won't frighten Granny....not racist...nice manners.

Clearly you haven't been to Birmingham lately.

You mean Farage could be bribed to disband Reform to make way for the Tories? Possible I suppose.

Might not have to go as far as disbanding but it’s a possibility. Money counts when it comes to Farage and a very wealthy billionaire could make him an offer too good to refuse.

The alternative is another Labour government limping in due to the right splitting. Not sure Reform would get the numbers required for an outright majority or even enough to form a coalition with the Tories.

Of course, it’s also very possible that Labour make such a balls of it that they become even less popular at the ballot.

Or Greens being used to split the left vote.

Possible but their leader is so utterly deranged that by the time the GE rolls around, only the looniest of loons would vote for him.

He has a giant chip on his shoulder, which stems from the fact he’s never really been accepted in the places he wanted to be. He hates the south and London in particular. His politics are hugely divisive even within the labour movement, let alone the country.

But it’s not bs. Labour won less votes than Corbyn in 2024. They limped in due to FPTP that worked exceptionally well for them that night.

Here is the fact…

“At the 2024 general election, Labour received 33.7% of the UK-wide vote and won 411 seats, giving it a large Commons majority. The House of Commons Library describes 33.7% as the lowest vote share for any party winning a general election in the post-war period.”

Put another way, 2/3 people rejected Labour at the ballot but they still sneaked in.

You'd be surprised how many supporters he has even here on MN.

And I believe we won't wait long for election. My bet is on 2027. The first indication will be on 8th Oct - if Labour keep the seat AB will be encouraged. The second will be 28/10 budget. If no massive tax rises then it's nearly certain they will go for snap election

Lifelover16 · 01/10/2026 22:21

I find him utterly insincere, he hasn’t addressed any of the elephants in the room, and is tinkering around the edges. The bit about his dad was almost as bad as Starmers “ son of a toolmaker “ nonsense. The speech did nothing at all to convince me otherwise.

My prediction is that there will be a snap election. The tories and reform won’t cooperate with each other and Labour will be the largest party forming a minority government. There’ll be a year or two before AB has to call another election to try to secure a majority. At that point the right will unite and win a majority. Then it’s adios AB!

Interesting. I do think Burnham owes it to the electorate to have his manifesto tested. Too many changes since 2024 when Labour sneaked in despite 2/3 people rejecting them at the ballot.

I share the first part of your prediction. I'm not convinced about the second. If AB becomes PM of minority government he'll cling on till the last second possible.
