To ask if you watched Andy Burnham’s bloody good speech?

Househunt2026 · 30/09/2026 21:48

As in actually watched it and didn’t just doom scroll the commentary? It was bold and honest and pragmatic and actually made me hopeful that we have someone at the helm with a vision for a better tomorrow who has Britain’s best interests at heart.

The National Care Service is a masterstroke, paid for out of scrapping the triple lock and the very real savings of reducing NHS bills on A&E and hospital beds for elderly who should be in care but have nowhere to go.

Scrapping right to buy and increasing council control of housing, boosting the technical education track for young people, pushing renewables, nuclear and energy sovereignty, public control of key utilities for water to get bills down and reduce pollution, investing in people & getting them back to work, leasehold reform by Christmas and everyone’s energy bill will be reduced by fast tracking decoupling energy prices from global gas pricing and by having no VAT on energy bills by TOMORROW!

You can watch the whole thing here and be directly informed instead of getting your perspective filtered through all the bots and misinformation peddlers online m.youtube.com/watch?v=jyjTT_55Gi0

Time will tell but there a couple of factors that make this unlikely:

Labour have 3 more years to piss off an already pisssed off electorate.

Don’t underestimate the right, they can be very tenacious if they see the threat of a left coalition on the horizon. And they’re more likely to get out and vote.

Edited

They can be as tenacious as they like, unless they all back the same horse, the outcome will still be the same.

OneFastPinkTraybake · 01/10/2026 20:36

It should not be this bloody hard to do things right for people. I am sick of people who earn well telling someone like me who can't afford to put their heating on in the winter that we are all in it together. We are not.

And Starmer did his level best to block Burnham’s return to Westminster, of course...

Of course, because Burnham wasn’t coming to help and support Starmer’s government (you know, the one that both the public and Labour members actually voted for). He was coming to depose Starmer and seize power like the arrogant entitled prick that he is.

I think the Clacton election showed that apathy is ruling the day at the moment. The turnout was so low, not sure if that’s because people don’t care anymore or because they felt the Joe candidates weren’t worth them bothering or what, but even though the whole thing was ridiculous, the turnout was concerning.
People were either content with Farage or a bin, the fact they didn’t go out to chose one is worrying.

Hopefully the turnout will be higher in the next Clacton by-election.

They didn't help, though. And were completely unnecessary and rather disgusting.

What do "most of you" think "did for him"? I think it was Mandelson.

Yes, a significant weighting should be attached to the Mandelson debacle.

Add in the WFA, the backbench rebellion, the toxic Reeves, u-turns, terrible messaging, the freebies, and a simple lack of narrative etc etc.

And that’s what they might end up doing. Farage has a huge ego but he’s open to £ and may be persuaded to help galvanise a right contingent to bury the left. They also have the might of big businesses behind them who will become increasingly frustrated with Labour.

And it probably won’t take much given that Labour are weak and sneaked in last time. Burnham ain’t a fool and he can see the way the wind is blowing hence the push for electoral reform. If not, Labour could be out of power for a generation.

Labour deserves to be out for a generation. They had 15 years in opposition and yet they came to power with absolutely no ideas, no direction, no great energy and no urgency. Compare it to 1997.

Michelle Mone? As in the one subsequently sued by a Conservative Govt?

Mone was criminal and Tory paid the price.

Shall we talk about Dale Vince? Ecotricity owner who donated many millions to Labour and Labour being absolute zealots about green energy at the worst time in history?

Or Palantir links with NHS? all under Wes's leadership

They limped in simply through a quirk of FPTP. Nobody really wanted them and now we have a PM who essentially bulldozed his way in. He really should call a GE if he had a set.

Everything that Burnham talks about seems to be for a future Labour government after the next election. What he should be doing is focusing on delivering the manifesto that the current government were elected on.

You mean Farage could be bribed to disband Reform to make way for the Tories? Possible I suppose.

I’m not sure that Farage still has the ability to do that. He no longer controls the party and it’s clear that some of the senior members are already planning for a future without him.

I googled and got this but you can check if you like

Compared to typical by-elections:No, a 44% turnout is actually considered quite respectable for a UK by-election, as many historical by-elections frequently see voter turnouts drop below 40%

Yes I have had a look, average turnout has been around 30% for both by- and local elections. I’m really surprised to be honest, it’s a real shame. Mind you, the last general election managed just less than 60%, lowest since 2001.

Personally I have decided it is a good thing for EU bureaucrats to legislate for us. From what I have seen in the last 10 years we aren’t able to rationally legislate or get sensible shit down anymore anyway. So delegate it and start growing economically again or it will simply a matter of years of pointless infighting over petty identity and cultural wars and blaming and shaming. It is so dull and unproductive.

Delegate it and start growing

Have you looked at the growth levels in the big EU countries?

Imdunfer · 01/10/2026 21:19

godmum56 · 01/10/2026 20:59

Starmer was never going to be a permanency. As I said at the time, he was the rebound boyfriend.

He was used by the left as a Trojan horse to get Labour MPs elected, to be removed and replaced with a Corbynite leader who would not at the time have been able to deliver a landslide because of the fears of centre and centre right right voters.

Watching now. But be careful summarising. Not everyone will watch and it could start people panicking or sharing misinformation. For example: he said scrapping the RTB scheme will be for new properties only (or maybe new tenants as well, that wasn't clear and I'm further on now) - anyone currently in a council house can still buy.

If it has it wouldn't surprise me, there are less jobs since Kier came in, so what would an immigrant come here for.

Presumably you're not competing for a job at a hand car wash?
