Loudly complaining about smell in public loo

Okokokokoh · 30/09/2026 17:01

Suddenly needed to use the toilet (ibs) in M&S, a lady walked in and kept saying. "Oh god it stinks in here!" Over and over again to everyone in the queue.
aibu or is that a bit mean!? It's a toilet after all. I ended up having to stay in the cubicle for ages because then i was too embarrassed to walk out after she'd been telling everyone over and over again that it stinks.
i did flush multiple times to try and avoid too much smell but I'm not sure what else I could have done.

I totally understand what your saying because it happened to me in Asda as I to have IBS and had to rush to the toilet and then some woman came in the toilets and there was a queue for the toilet and as you will realise I did leave a bit of a pong and as I came out of the toilet this woman said omg what a awful smell and why can't you do this sort of thing at home to which I replied I suppose your sh-t smells of roses and walked out.

ILoveListeningToRainAtNight · Yesterday 02:24

I can imagine it might have been very strong. I have a family member with IBD and, when it wasn't under control, there were no words to describe it. Of course, we never said anything. There's no need to embarrass someone for something they can't help.

I'm sure hers smells of roses! Horrible woman. What does she think toilets are for anyway?
I had eaten something that disagreed with me and had to go urgently, also in M&S. It was horrendously smelly and someone came into the next cubicle and after about 30 seconds, retched a couple of times. I felt like I should shout an apology, but I escaped asap.

That happened to me in a public loo campsite type one. We were on a road trip and I don’t know what it was I ate but I had to visit every loo stop on the way home. We were on motorbikes too so peeling off the gear whilst clenching was interesting.

At the same time as I walked out a lady with a massive (recent) black eye walked in with a friend. I saw the men from her group waiting outside but I wasn’t in a state to be saying anything to anyone….

Hi Okokokokoh. I would recommend having a can of freshener or a perfume spray in your handbag to help with the odor to spray before or after you flush the toilet. Just read above that another member; LastNightMyPJsSavedMe, kindly suggested what I just said too. All the best, Oko; Kiwi Grandma😘

What do you mean by emergency? My normal bowel frequency is 2 or 3 times a day so if I am out of the home I fairly often have to go in public toilets. I wouldn't count that as a emergency any more than I'd count needing a wee in a public toilet as an emergency.

Congratulations. Are you able to understand that what is normal for you may not be normal for everyone else?

BubblesDE54 · Yesterday 07:49

I used to work with someone who always stated when anyone moaned.."surprise the shitter smells like a shitter! We all do it get over it" which is what anyone should have told this nasty woman!

KissTheBigUglyShark · Yesterday 07:53

I think people who make a big fuss about this are trying to make sure everyone knows it isn't them... but as with farts, that just makes me suspect them more... hence the rhyme 'she who smelt it, dealt it'... so own goal, lady! 😆

You think someone walking into a public toilet complaining about the terrible smell is doing so so people don't think it's them? Why would anyone think they're the culprit Grin

Look, we all occasionally have to use public facilities. If anyone has an issue which means their bowel motions are excessively toxic then they should have the aforementioned VIPoo handy to at least try and make it more bearable for other users.

Actually, it is within the normal range either to pass a stool 3 times a day, or to go for 3 days without passing a stool. So the PP was right, that bowel frequency would be considered normal by a doctor, that is to say, not in need of any intervention.

Sorry what? I'm well aware that normal frequency is between every 3 days to 3 times per day. I was mentioning my frequency in response to someone who seemed to be suggesting that people would only poo in a public toilet in an "emergency" (so presumably rarely and only if they suddenly developed diarrhoea). I have no idea why my post warranted your reply.

How horrid and unnecesary of her.
If you are concerned about it happening again, maybe you could carry some Poo-Pourri with you.

I am genuinely curious, so my apologies if this comes out nasty or insensitive- would toilet sprays actually work though? I only ask because when I'm due on my period I have the worst smelling poo in the world (I've nicknamed it period poo). Toilet sprays and air freshners can not cover the snell.
When I have a period poo in a public toilet people have commented on the smell, but as I've gotten older I don't hold back so I have in the past called back, I can't help it you are in a public toilet. If you don't like it, go elsewhere. But I'm a moody cow lol

Alwaystired101 · Yesterday 10:22

I suffer with my stomach and the smell is horrendous.
I also hate smells they make me gag
When i have a really bad one im normally sick also due to the smell and no amount of spray will make it smell less

MyPurpleHeart · Yesterday 10:37

In these situations it may be best to just pretend it doesn't bother you, say something like 'oh well never mind it happens to the best of us'.

I was shopping in Aldi once and I had a sore tummy come on suddenly, I farted discreetly and it did smell pretty bad. A woman not far behind me looked at me and kept shouting 'thats dirty, youre dirty'. Then she followed me the rest of the way around the supermarket glaring at me telling me I was dirty. Eventually Id had enough and said please do fuck off you look insane.

Lets all stop pretending its some mortal sin it does happen and sometimes you cant avoid it. Its very different to walking around letting it go wherever you feel with no regard for others.

willitevergetwarm · Yesterday 10:38

I have diverticulitis and had to go once in a very busy shopping centre. Toilets luckily were empty so I chose the furthest away one from the door and sinks thinking I'd be ok.

Unluckily for me, 2 girls came in and headed to the cubicles next to where I was and proceeded to announce loudly that it stunk and imagine doing something like that in public.

We met at the sinks and I told them that a toilet is for using and that's exactly what I had done. I asked them if they s**t in a toilet or had it all gone to their lips and boobs. Needless to say they left quite quickly

Even if your movements are ok. If you are recovering from viral gastroenteritis like me, your poo smells different for the first 3-5 days after doing solid poos. As it’s something to do with the healthy bacteria in your gut.

I had shivers on Sunday evening and it has taken the stuffing out of me

The posts on here. So we can't use public loos designed for the purpose.

So where, pray, may we go to the loo if we are not at home?

Bowels don't operate to a schedule I'm afraid. Well mine does, but I've certainly had moments/weeks when it absolutely doesn't and needs emptying NOW! And it really does mean now, not in an hour when I am home again. I'll need the nearest loo.

The bigger problem than peoples' dainty noses is that there aren't enough public loos. We should get a lot angrier about that, given that it's a medical need.

Oh well wear a clothes peg. Better than someone shitting themselves so you don't have to smell it in a loo...

...but then they'll stink of it everywhere.

Seriously ladies, what would you prefer? Stop this faux ladylike "oh going to the loo is so bad taste" when we all have to do it.

Wildegeese · Yesterday 11:18

I'm sorry that happened to you OP.

It's not like anyone goes out and WANTS to have a stomach/ bowel flare up and need to deal with it in a public place around strangers.

I honestly expect public loos to smell bad and just deal with it. They are for everyone, including people with GI issues. I get in, do what I need to do and get out.

ScreentimeInTheMeantime · Yesterday 11:49

My 3 year old said something like that some weeks ago in a public loo,and I spoke to her about it to explain it’s best to avoid making comments like that, YANBU.

But perhaps the lady just wasn’t thinking about the fact the person might still be there.

If you have IBS or a condition where you know you’re likely to cause a strong unpleasant smell, you should carry a small Vipoo or something. The smell isn’t your fault, you can’t help having the condition but you can make it a little less unpleasant for yourself and those around you where possible.

I agree with this. Sometimes people stink out a public toilet and although I guess they cannot help it carrying some air freshener is just the polite thing to do.

Regarding public toilets

An aging population needs the toilet more.

Councils have closed their public toilets as to save like £30k a year, per block, which probably waste that money and the rest per week.

Also toilets get vandalised. What sort of sick person would do this? What do they achieve from doing this?
