Loudly complaining about smell in public loo

Okokokokoh · 30/09/2026 17:01

Suddenly needed to use the toilet (ibs) in M&S, a lady walked in and kept saying. "Oh god it stinks in here!" Over and over again to everyone in the queue.
aibu or is that a bit mean!? It's a toilet after all. I ended up having to stay in the cubicle for ages because then i was too embarrassed to walk out after she'd been telling everyone over and over again that it stinks.
i did flush multiple times to try and avoid too much smell but I'm not sure what else I could have done.

I feel for you OP, similar has happened to me before. IBS is horribly difficult to deal with, really impacts your life. There aren’t enough public loos around these days. Pay no heed to the that woman’s comments. I yearn to be a 7am regular!

Mokel · 01/10/2026 18:52

Whilst on the subject on toilets. If you drop loo roll on the floor, please pick it up. You don’t use this to wipe you bottom. A bit of loo roll to grab, collect then drop into the loo.

Do you leave bits of loo roll on the floor at home? No

some one else’s poo smell is just grim. People who have IBS or eat too much meat or both should stay at home until their bowels are clear.

Or at the very least try and use products to save us all from the misery of their personal smells.

What does your poo smell like?

TheTruthWillSetYouFreeMaybe · 01/10/2026 18:59

It was her problem - not yours. I am so sorry she made you feel this way. I understand as a fellow IBS (d) sufferer. You don’t need thoughtless people making you feel bad. Anyway, public toilets often have smells and it could have been anything or anyone. Please don’t think anymore about it

KLD89 · 01/10/2026 19:27

I’m in the IBS club, so I stand with you in solidarity. The only peace I have ever had with public toiletting (when needs must) was when my twins were little and I could take us all into the baby change toilet and blame the smell on them (until the got older and would loudly exclaim back “no it wasn’t, it was you” 🥴)

SuePerblybuilt · 01/10/2026 19:34

I would have walked out, nonchalant, and said loudly “I bet your shit smells of roses, pet”.
Unnecessary and a bit pathetic.

BunnyLake · 01/10/2026 19:37

@Okokokokoh i carry a small spray with me as I can sometimes get a random dose of the skits. VIP (Fruity). I think it’s already been mentioned.

V I Poo is incredible. Don't know how it works, it just does.

Weird yes to comment.
My own view is public loos should be for wees only as anything else holds the queue up which can be bad enough in the women’s. (Though I do understand that everyone can have an emergency).

If only bowels would comply eh? Sometimes they can just be so bloody impatient! (former bowel cancer sufferer).

I always carry it in my bag.

Dahlia1234 · 01/10/2026 19:46

I remember being in a queue for the toilets once in a similar situation, they did smell pretty pungent, and a woman in the queue pulled a gagging face at me and said 'Bloody stinks in here doesn't it?' I just looked at her and asked her what she thought it should smell of, given where we were. Her face turned bright red as the sheer logic of my question hit her. She cleared her throat, and became suddenly, intensely interested in the safety instructions on the hand dryer 😂😂😂

restingbitchface30 · 01/10/2026 19:48

Pay no mind to it honestly. I don’t have ibs but I’ve decided if I’m out and I need to go I need to go. Couldn’t give two hoots. I’m not struggling through stomach ache to avoid a smell everyone else in that toilet makes.

I am glad you have recovered from your cancer. it’s a swine.

How horrid and unnecesary of her.
If you are concerned about it happening again, maybe you could carry some Poo-Pourri with you.

These sprays are harmful to aquatic life and probably hormone and endocrine disruptors but you do you

DearCritic · 01/10/2026 19:54

It’s odd she repeatedly said it.
I think if it was 2 friends, they might’ve both said something to each other, or just saying it once, but strange it was said repeatedly.
It’s normal when entering a particularly disgusting smelling public toilet to say something to friend. 🤷‍♀️ most don’t reek, so when they do, I don’t think it’s outlandish to comment. But what’s strange is repeatedly. I doubt she was pointing fingers at anyone, just stating it was unpleasant to be there/ probably needed cleaning. I don’t think you needed to hide and she would’ve been looking for the culprit

Treemouse · 01/10/2026 20:01

Awww sorry OP. Sounds like the stinkiest thing in that toilet wasn’t your poo but her attitude.
dont let this put you off going places or pooing in public loos again - when you gotta go you gotta go - and sometimes it just smells (because it’s poo!).

Agree! And also migraine inducing to those sensitive to chemicals. A bit of poo smell for a few mins in a loo really ain’t that bad!

cavalier · 01/10/2026 20:12

Poo pouret is good stuff and VIP POO . Life saver .. I have IBS and it can be so embarrassing but we’ve all got bowels 🤷🏻‍♀️ it really helps me relax and just go and is very affective .. small bottle not difficult to carry in bag 👍I hate it that I sometimes have to go but i just have to .. and these products are a god send truly

I and so very done with being kind we have a health crisis obesity is a major problem as is is poor diets.

IBS is common in women of every size. Healthy diet also doesn’t preclude you - legumes and cruciferous vegetables are some of the biggest triggers.

XenoBitch · 01/10/2026 20:21

Lunaticmess · 01/10/2026 18:38

Agreed. Totally different things. I have a very sensitive gag reflex. Should I request that everyone who uses a public loo please take some spray, because it's just as uncomfortable to find myself puking because of their stench? At the end of the day, it's hardly difficult to take some spray with you to make everybody's life a bit more pleasant.

Those sprays can set off asthma in some people.

It is just a smell. Learn some coping mechanisms to deal with them.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 01/10/2026 20:26

Much much easier to carry a small box of matches. Strike one and wave it around until burnt down. More effective than any type of air freshener, as it eliminates the cause of the smell.
I have made this point so many times on threads in this forum.

Eudaimonia11 · 30/09/2026 17:46

If you have IBS or a condition where you know you’re likely to cause a strong unpleasant smell, you should carry a small Vipoo or something. The smell isn’t your fault, you can’t help having the condition but you can make it a little less unpleasant for yourself and those around you where possible.

Exactly this

This is why I think all
bowel conditions should be entitled to use of disabled toilets without judgement. My sister has a stoma bag and she uses disabled toilets as she says when she empties it sometimes it smells bad and people have often made comments and if it’s busy she gets upset and stressed. I think it is mean of this lady to say something and completely immature. Everyone is different but if that was me. I would have came out and embarrassed her, politely saying ‘I have a bowel condition so keep your big gob shut you stupid bitch’ ….but that’s just me…. Haha

But surely people who have to go in a public loo are doing it because they have to? No one wants to queue at a public loo for their own amusement?

Thank you for the kind wishes and yes it was indeed a swine.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 01/10/2026 20:41

Agree with the Poster who says shit stinks. I would have been wretching if l were in the queue. If l was the person who caused it. On the way out l would have mentioned to a store assistant about the smell.

Said something like it really stinks in the toilets. Everybody in their is complaining.

Can you mention it to a Manager and ask if a cleaner/ member of staff can go in there and use some disinfectant/air thresher?. Thank You.

Job done
