Not unless they reinstate the 2 child benefit cap, plus restrict benefits for immigrants. They won't do either so no. Kemi is the one for me.

Benefits for immigrants are restricted now.

Most people don't vote on a single issue so the question is poor.

If reworded into two parts:
Do I support removal of average salary from the pension 'triple lock'.
Yes, because it doesn't actually make much difference. With salaries currently lowering relative to costs that element is becoming less relevant anyway.

Would I vote Labour because of it?

No, life is more complex. I vote on the range of policies and approaches, including the local issues that my MP is supposed to represent.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 30/09/2026 10:45

I couldn't vote for Labour anyway. But I do support losing the triple lock kust because I have children and want some semblance of a decent country economically . I don't expect social care will be done properly or fairly under this government unfortunately though. I don't think the quality of people is there to achieve it. There's been no sign of it since July 2024.

I find every day depressing when I look at the news and read about this government. Palestinians fast tracked into this country. And having a black labrador and going to the pub in the countryside is "far right" apparently.

Don’t give a shit about triple lock but will never ever vote labour in my lifetime. Ruined the country and continuing.

The Tories didn’t ruin it their 14 years (2010-2024)? Especially Cameron (Brexit), Johnson and Truss and her mini budget.
Plus the damage done in Thatcher and Major years (1979-1997).
In the last 47 years, Labour have only been in power for 15 of them.

Love4both · 30/09/2026 10:49

Why would anyone vote for the party that is so anti British people?

Malasana · 30/09/2026 10:50

dustabsorber · 30/09/2026 10:31

The Triple Lock won't affect current pensioners that much, we have already got our snouts in the trough. It's the people on here who have been baying for the end of the Triple Lock who will be hit as the pension shrinks away. HAA HAA.

Are you usually this spiteful about people younger than you?

How?

Scrambledomelette · 30/09/2026 10:57

Until they show the kind of fiscal competance that can grow the economy, it's all irrelevant. Pensioners might be the fashionable scapegoat for their supporters today but we are all in for it unless we can find another route out of managed decline.

january1244 · 30/09/2026 11:07

I actually think moving to the double lock is fair and needed doing, but it’s not going to get close to what’s needed for universal social care provision. I’m working on the basis that we won’t be getting pensions anyway when we get there, so saving as best as I can.

I won’t be voting Labour however, unless they do reform welfare and reinstate the two child cap. But given Burnham campaigned for the removal of the cap, I very much doubt that will happen

I agree with this - I don’t think it’s a massively useful question, as in the real world, most people don’t vote like that.

I’m glad a politician is at least starting a conversation about modifying the triple lock, though.

At the moment, I think I personally might still use my vote tactically for whoever is most likely to keep Reform out.

But having said that I thought the Prime Minister’s speech was really excellent - and it’s made me feel excited about politics, and the fact that we might actually get some substantive debate about ideas for the first time in a long time. So, let’s see! Two years until the next election is a long time in modern politics…

ruffler45 · 30/09/2026 11:08

Most MPs and prospective candidates dont have a clue how to run anything physically or financially and that includes a new care system, what ever that is supposed to look like. Cant imagine removing the triple lock will make any difference.

Same here, they have become a communist dictatorship and will never get my vote.

ernestbiggins · 30/09/2026 11:10

Why the triple lock and not axing payments for more than two child (having more than two children is an absolute luxury in this day and age). Or stopping the Chagos deal which will cost the country billions. Or reducing foreign aid which costs billions. Isn't the Government supposed to work for the people of the country they are elected to represent and prioritise and protect its most vulnerable citizens. And what happens when old people don't have enough money because their pension doesn't keep up with inflation and they aren't entitled to any other help? Are they just left to freeze/starve? Why do families with children need protection from the cost of living but not old people?

Hyperbole much? Communist dictatorship? You're having a laugh, and it's an insult to those who did live and die under actual dictatorships.

I wouldn’t vote for Labour regardless but I have no issue with the pension triple lock being removed. Further, I would make it means-tested and ditch my pension contributions altogether. I’d also like privatised healthcare and not being penalised for being able to afford a nice life.

caringcarer · 30/09/2026 11:19

I'd never ever vote Labour no matter what they promise. They have bankrupt the country and cranked up tax and borrowing too many times for me to ever trust them. One of the first things they did when they got in power was to raise benefits. Spending so much money and creating so much additional debt is totally unfair on our children and grandchildren who will inherit all this debt. I know Conservatives added debt but Labour take it to another level. I'm coming up to state pension age but don't mind about triple or double lock. I think spending on all areas need reigning in. We need Reform UK to cut welfare spending by imposing a cap that no person on benefits gets more than a person who works full time on minimum wage. At the same time increase personal allowances so workers benefit and work is incentivised. We need to opt out of EHCR and adopt A British Bill of Rights. We need to make the NHS a National Health Service as it was supposed to be not an International service. Any non UK citizens should pay up front for treatment or have medical insurance cover the full cost. Too many people from overseas take treatment then skip off overseas and don't pay their bill. We need to cut interest on student loans. We need to cut back the Civil Service to numbers before COVID. We need to cap the amount of employers pension to say 15 percent for Civil Servants but instead pay them that money as higher salary to stop them claiming UC top ups. We need to stop PIP payments to people who only have ADHD, mild anxiety or other less serious issues and focus resources on the most disabled. We need to make people who want UC top ups to work at least 30 hours per week. We need free child care for people going out to work for 1-4 year olds if they work 40 hours. Work less and pay their own child care. We need more after school clubs run by child care people. I'd like care leavers to be given a £5k start up at 18 then £2k for 3 years. We need to stop the boats. We need to increase spending on defence. I'd like a better mental health service that doesn't leave a gap between child services and adult services. We need a smaller state. I know no party will do all of this but Reform UK is closest to the things on my wish list. I would like the next government whoever they are to start to repay the massive debt as at the moment far too much income tax collected is simply wasted on servicing the UK debt.

SmallDFartyCarNRG · 30/09/2026 11:20

As the main group of reliable voters it will be up to the elderly, mostly. With the current cost of care homes/home care they are unlikely to be keen to relinquish their hoards and triple lock without something else in place first.

I strongly suspect a lot of them would rather have the right to die with dignity but they won't get that choice.

Badbadbunny · 30/09/2026 11:20

Nope. It's just one policy. I'd need to be in favour of lots of other policies before I'd vote for them. There's no way that the proposal will "fund" the care changes promised, so I'd need to know how they'll be funded, i.e. what taxes are going to rise and what government spending they're going to cut.

Any more tax rises on working people and I definitely won't be voting for them. But scrapping NIC and increasing income tax would help them get my vote.

Cardhey · 30/09/2026 11:22

Labour need to go now. They are literally buying votes with welfare benefits etc. It is bordering on corruption imo.

Yup, you'd get my vote! Certainly for means testing ALL state benefits including state pension, but at a relatively high level, somewhere between £50-£100k of income or £1 million of assets. And yes, big changes to healthcare, such as tax relief on private health payments or contributions towards private health based on the saving to the NHS of having treatment done privately rather than the NHS paying.

CorporalJohn · 30/09/2026 11:23

As a pensioner who has benefited from it, yes I would vote Labour.

The financial arguments for its abolition are unanswerable.

GasPanic · 30/09/2026 11:25

Difficult one for me.

There are things he is proposing that I like. eg social care, mansion tax. He is also going to be pragmatic on drilling and I think limit the spending. The triple lock has to go at some point.

He seems like a person who is willing to make tough decisions and go through with them against the hysteria.

OTOH I think some of the other things proposed are a bit crazy. I don't really trust him on immigration, the new help to buy is madness and going back into the EU an impossibility (although I would welcome closer ties).

I also don't like the idea of "reform" of the electoral system. Which is most cases is normally better described as gerrymandering - people wanting to change the electoral rules because it will benefit them.

So currently floating on whether I would vote for him. He has some time to earn my vote yet.

what happens when old people don’t have enough money because their pension doesn’t keep up with inflation

If your concern is pensions not keeping up with inflation, you don’t need to worry. It will still rise by the higher of inflation, and 2.5%.

Why do families with children need protection from the cost of living

What blanket protection is there for families with children, as a group?
