You are the one with the ‘cry me a river’ line though. In any number of situations that could be reversed.

Aye it could and I would still feel the same.

But you are the one bemoaning public sector workers on lower salaries than private sector ones.

In my view the best way would be to equalise public and private sector provisions and salaries.

I agree, but imagine the howls of protest from the public sector workers when they see their pension benefits reduced, even if it means a salary increase.

I've always thought that the real answer is to make the pension more flexible, like in some big private sector pension schemes where the worker can choose to pay more/less into the pension scheme via a salary sacrifice arrangement, so at times in their life when they need more "take home", they select a smaller pension contribution, but later on, after promotions etc and they have more money, they can "salary sacrifice" more into pensions. It would make public sector wages/pension comparisons more transparent.

Im not being sarcastic. She was the one who told me what sealioning was which is why I replied to her. Don't pipe up if you're going to get things wrong.

Oi. Dont tell me not to 'pipe up'. Who the hell do you think you are? You've done more than your fair share of piping up on this thread. You asked @Blossomtoes because you had a bone to pick. You could just have easily queried the first poster to mention it. And it was a good impression of sarcasm !

And all you had to do was use Google....as you told someone else to do upthread.

I honestly don't know why you are bothering to tell me this when I hadn't asked you. Anyway lets not discuss sealions any more as it's derailing the thread a bit.

You're an odd 'un. It wasn't me guv, honestly. Jeez. Anyway knot your knickers again because I get a public sector pension too. And if it irritates people of your calibre then all the better.

But I'm perfectly relaxed? Should I be getting agitated by you or pensions? I don't think Ive said a word in judgement about anyone's pension on this thread? In fact I've specifically said I don't have any views on it?

I was arguing that local government pensions are underwritten by taxpayers and employer contributions are made by taxpayers. And you said they weren't. Well obviously I am right. Where else are employer contributions going to come from in the public sector other than taxpayers? You haven't given me anything to contradict that.

As I said upthread, I'm not saying thats a good or bad thing. It is what it is.

They are not. The employer contributed until retirement. Council Tax. As did every single employee. The pensions are paid from a pension fund with zero tax payer input.

The employer being local government I think you said?

How much do you and your employer pay into your pension fund?

Pineneedlesincarpet · 03/10/2026 16:04

I am my employer.

Did your employer not make employer contributions? Were you part of the local government pension scheme? Or were you a local government employee that had a private pension instead.

I mean it doesnt really matter what you individually had anyway. Public sector pensions are underwritten by the tax payer which was my original point. Apart from perhaps yours apparently. The exception to the rule so doesn't really help. And again I make not comment on whether this is a good or bad thing. So we will leave it there.

BIossomtoes · 01/10/2026 10:02

I think care homes will be regulated. And not before time, they’re currently a licence to print money.

Could do with having some publicly run or not-for-profit ones.

DdraigGoch · 03/10/2026 19:00

Goldenbear · 01/10/2026 12:33

Equally, if you think homes sitting empty due to foreign investors is a problem, then do you not see how this may encourage selling the house and increasing stock available to avoid the order. In Denmark and you are a foreign national you have to prove you have been a resident in the country for five consecutive years before you can buy a house which to some extent removes this problem.

I wish that we had this rule.

I'm not a public sector engineer but everything knows there is massive trade off (why I'm not one) between salary in public sector and private with income. The pension is due to that. I mean, who are you kidding? 🤣
