I have a multi millionaire senior relative who receives £1,400 from the state pension each month, in addition to 6k private pension.

He's not means tested and he's received that for 30 years. Yes, he paid into the system but he does not need it!!! He also had free uni, dirt cheap first house back in the 60s and retired aged 59.

Meanwhile the younger generation:

  • thousands in student loan debt
  • asset poor as can't get on the housing ladder
  • means tested for child benefit, tax free childcare etc
  • working until late 60s/ 70s

Why do pensioners have it easy while younger ones pay the price?

For vulnerable pensioners at risk of poverty, there should obviously be provision to help them, I'm not suggesting we let people starve. But multimillionaire pensioners or very asset rich pensioners do NOT need the state pension. It's about time things changed.

You are talking about 1 person rather than the majority of pensioners. Need to bring back 2 child cap and stop paying for 30 hours pw free childcare. Need to get student loans sorted out so that's not cripping young people. Stop paying for foreign nationals to have health care here (health tourists). I could go on ... and on ... and on.

Me too
and if it becomes means tested I will blow every single penny of my pension pot before retirement
never claimed tax credits, childcare subsidies, free school meals, unemployment benefits.
I will enjoy the next 10 years making sure I do not have any means to be tested

Yes exactly, so sick and tired of this, I’m not long off retirement but working till 67 and trying to save, work and have paid enough NI for my state pension

Nope. The whole point is that they have paid in, so they are entitled to it.

Randomamsi · 29/09/2026 19:55

The numbers to give you clarity:

Relative receives £1,400 a month from state, other income is minimum £6k a month. No means test at all.

I claim child benefit about £100 a month from the state. Salary about £3,600 However due to a bonus I went over the child benefit threshold and now have to pay back some of the money and Gov is clawing it back.

Please explain how this is fair?

Your relative is receiving that to which he is entitled, you have received money to which you are not entitled, whatever your reason, and you are being expected to repay it, seems reasonable to me.
How much should a person receive in your Utopia? Would you say that this person who has worked for that private pension should not be allowed access to the NHS, 'they can afford to pay'?

That's the problem though isn't it. Very few have actually paid enough.

Yet another one! State pension IS a benefit! Cope!

Strictly speaking benefits are paid based on need with no requirement to have paid into the system. The full state pension requires you to have 35 qualifying years when you were either working and paying NI, or you had a different qualifying life situation - mat leave, unemployment, fosterer, disabled.

TeenWithNoFilter · 29/09/2026 21:28

I worry for the future because of discussions like this. There is NO incentive to work and contribute to society and its getting less and less. Who is going to pay taxes to fund pensions and to fund NHS. This older person paid into his pension and society and is entitled to payback. All this going on about younger generations sacrifices is also tiresome. Let them live the minimalist lifestyle of previous generations and then come back and report how much theyve saved and maybe also have a bit of compassion for older generations.
No im not on a pension but this country was built on the sacrifices of the elderly and there's no appreciation that we have because they gave!

State pension is not a benefit - people have paid into it while they were working through NI.
Pension credit is a benefit given to those who have not paid enough in.
It would not be remotely fair to shift the goalposts and not allow those who have paid in for a state pension to access it.

It’s a benefit!

mybiggreenfrog · 29/09/2026 21:28

Manhattanman · 29/09/2026 21:18

It may have been said already, but nobody 'pays in' to anything. Current taxpayers pay current pensions - that's all. You are categorically NOT paying into a pension scheme so if the government of the day decides to change the rules, there's nothing you can do about it as there's no obligation for the government to pay us anything as a pension. This myth that we're all paying into a pension scheme needs to end.

Can you tell me why I've just paid £3k to top up my state pension?

Lemonyyy · 29/09/2026 21:29

Lyraloo · 29/09/2026 21:22

Completely unreasonable! I started work at 16, not the 22 + that your generation maybe start at! I worked all my life until I retired and paid into the system. I never claimed a penny in other benefits and now your generation begrudge me having a pension!

Oh come off it, plenty of young people are still working from 16-17 alongside college, but even if they weren't that 4-5 extra years doesn't mean you should get 30 years of paid for retirement whilst future generations get fuck all just because they started work a couple of years later than you did!

If you’re in your 50s and retired then you’re not poor and please do not plead poverty here.
i am in my 40s. Got uni free. Scrimped and saved but did get on the property ladder.
not getting your nails done isn’t going to get you a house on one income in your twenties any more. Face facts

I’m clearly still working if heading towards retirement . My generation’s being bled dry by our children- funding uni maintenance which the loans don’t cover( rents and monthly bills), funding holes in the NHS for all of us, care for parents whilst funding adult children living at home. We are the most screwed generation. And nails, thousands of ponds of tech, needless endless hauls, holidays, throwaway clothes, endless renos, expensive constant Ubers, takeaways etc …..all very much fund deposits for houses. It adds up to thousands of pounds.

I find it hilarious how aghast some pensioners are at the state pension being described as a benefit - which is 100% is!

Of course it is, just as all those things paid to those who choose to have children receive thousands in benefits over the years, they are 100% benefits.

Of course not all benefits are straight hand outs. The state pension is a benefit. They could scrap it tomorrow if they wanted. What’s it about pensioners being ‘benefit claimants’ you’re upset about?

nearlylovemyusername · 29/09/2026 21:31

They need to win election first.

Ending triple lock is not enough to pay for social care.

So there will be much more tax increases yet.

AB will call election next year or in 2028.

Just read manifestos then.

I’m not upset. Call it what you like as long as I get it. When you youngsters get to pension age you’ll be mightily upset if you don’t get anything.

Teddleshon1 · 29/09/2026 21:32

Roughly one in eight 70 year olds went to university compared with over 50% of the current generation.

suburburban · 29/09/2026 21:33

If the can afford to keep on paying out for all the recent arrivals to the UK which never ends then they can keep paying for pensions that people have worked for and are citizens of the UK who should be the government’s priority in the first place

Boohoo76 · 29/09/2026 21:33

lazyarse123 · 29/09/2026 21:07

What the fuck does that last sentence mean? I worked for 50 years damn right i earnt my pension. I am one of the 80% of pensioners who are not millionaires. Some of us have done our best and contributed to society but were not able to save or pay plenty into a private pension. I have a very small private pension, less than £50 a month. I'm assuming you don't know all pensioners. There is no way your relative is getting all that in a state pension you can't make extra contributions into it just top it up to the maximum plus he'd have to be 95 to have been claiming 30 years.

Edited

Goodness me, did you never hear of SERPS?! Yes, some pensioners get significantly above the old basic pension amount and that does reflect the extra NI that they paid. My dad gets approx £17k per year.

Equally Pip claimants should be means tested. Why should someone with thousands and thousands of pounds in the bank be allowed to work and claim extra money when they are able to fund extra care themselves. Keep it fair. If you’re going to penalise one group then let’s do it across the board…

dustabsorber · 29/09/2026 21:34

We are not claimants, the state pension is paid automatically. They send you a letter telling you how much you are going to get 3 months in advance. There is no claiming involved so we aren't claimants. If this were France, people would be taking to the streets over this.

ExOptimist · 29/09/2026 21:34

chirrupybird · 29/09/2026 20:23

You know the older generation were the younger generation in the past. No one got any paid child care or child benefit, very few got to go to University because most people couldn't afford to. Most people had no chance of buying a house because they earned too little. In many ways it was no different or worse.

And no one gets £1400 a month in state pension about £12000 a year.

You are one of the numerous people claiming that no one gets 1400 a month state pension. Well they do.

I've been helping my 89 year old mum with her tax return and I've seen the letters from DWP telling her the amount of her state pension. In 25/26 it was about 330 per week, so just over 1400 per month.
