To be glad triple lock going and hope they means test it too

I have a multi millionaire senior relative who receives £1,400 from the state pension each month, in addition to 6k private pension.

He's not means tested and he's received that for 30 years. Yes, he paid into the system but he does not need it!!! He also had free uni, dirt cheap first house back in the 60s and retired aged 59.

Meanwhile the younger generation:

  • thousands in student loan debt
  • asset poor as can't get on the housing ladder
  • means tested for child benefit, tax free childcare etc
  • working until late 60s/ 70s

Why do pensioners have it easy while younger ones pay the price?

For vulnerable pensioners at risk of poverty, there should obviously be provision to help them, I'm not suggesting we let people starve. But multimillionaire pensioners or very asset rich pensioners do NOT need the state pension. It's about time things changed.

YABU are means testing, if you work hard and pay in all your life you should receive a pension… like a PP said, it’s not benefits it’s your turn. I agree with removing the triple lock

Agree...i know lots of wealthy pensioners. It should be means tested. I think the bar should be high for qualifying for a state pension but no it shouldn't be available for all. Makes me sick that they means test child benefit but not the pension. The media narrative of the poor pensioners is getting very tiresome and we now longer have the war generation who truly earned it

Yes I agree, bar should be high eg over £2m in assets/ savings/ pension funds

I've paid a shit load in student loan, got hit by the financial crises twice pay through the nose for a mortgage on a very ordinary house. I've never claimed a penny of anything, no financial leg up from parents who both left school at 14 and had careers that reflect that, but I probably earn enough (not millions or even 6 figures) that I likely wouldn't be entitled to a means tested state pension. Where does it end?

Same, I pay £300 pm in my student loan and never claimed a penny in benefits so why even bother paying through the nose in tax (as I should) pay back my student loan within the next year plus the interest and not even have a decent safety net in retirement,

2chocolateoranges · 29/09/2026 20:05

And again hard working people who have saved should be punished in your opinion.

people who have worked all their adult life, who have paid taxes should receive a state pension, that’s their reward for working and paying their tax etc.
State pension isn’t a benefit.

why should people who have never worked a day in their life , never paid taxes receive more of a pension because you want it to be means tested?

dh and I have paid our mortgage and the plan is to save for our retirement. Why should we be punished just because we have moderate savings and have worked all our adult life and paid into the system?

No, not for multimillionaires.

Regular people yes but if you have millions in the bank, why should you get money from state? While disabled/ working people have to jump through hoops to get support

He paid into it, Like any pension scheme and is entitled. You can’t make people pay in and not take their pension,

Yes I agree, bar should be high eg over £2m in assets/ savings/ pension funds

But if they do ever means test it, I strongly suspect it'd be amalgamated with universal credit, so savings above 16k....

MeowDoku · 29/09/2026 20:07

Randomamsi · 29/09/2026 20:04

It would be means testing the amount you have in a private pension eg if it's over a couple of million, you don't need it.

So what if you have a defined benefit pension? Having spent years being paid below private sector market value to account for that?

Because it’s a pension scheme and he paid in, stop being so jeakous

He will be paying taxes on the £6k monthly pension and £1k state pension so he will actually be paying more in tax than he takes

I'm talking about people with millions, not every day working people. There's a difference

Feeling suicidal. Paid in for years and now people want me to hurry up and die. Well you know what? I'd love to but I will be pumped full of antibiotics, given state of the art surgery etc because at least they did their duty and kept my miserabe life going. U

But you don’t pay in for child benefit like a pension scheme. Child benefit is a benefit. Thr state pension you pay your national insurance to claim.

Dandeloosha · 29/09/2026 20:08

I am neutral about the triple lock, but I have been paying into the state pension for 35 years, and I wouldn’t mind paying more for the same benefit, but to not receive it at all when I’ve based my retirement calculations on receiving it that whole time, would be devastating.

LuckyHazelFox · 29/09/2026 20:09

Randomamsi · 29/09/2026 19:59

Whatever the amount he doesn't need it.

Who are you to say what he needs.

EmpressStorm · 29/09/2026 20:10

Randomamsi · 29/09/2026 19:55

The numbers to give you clarity:

Relative receives £1,400 a month from state, other income is minimum £6k a month. No means test at all.

I claim child benefit about £100 a month from the state. Salary about £3,600 However due to a bonus I went over the child benefit threshold and now have to pay back some of the money and Gov is clawing it back.

Please explain how this is fair?

how can you not understand the difference between a benefit and a pension scheme.

Randomamsi · 29/09/2026 20:00

I'm talking about multiple millionaires, not every day people with modest pension funds

How many multimillionaires get state pension if they do it's a drop in the ocean.

And state pension ids not the much.

Redsofacushionsandsnacks · 29/09/2026 20:10

If he is a “multi-millionaire” op, have you ever stopped to consider the staggering amounts he will have paid, in tax, to earn those millions?

Octavia64 · 29/09/2026 20:11

if he announces that he’ll definitely lose the next election

absolutely he will be a net contributor, someone who paid in more than he took. Unlike the op

UnbeatenMum · 29/09/2026 20:11

No I don't think it should be means tested. When this happens it's never set high enough and people (like you) just above the threshold can really struggle. I didn't think child benefit should be means tested either FWIW for the same reason.

Pritipoll · 29/09/2026 20:12

I'm a pensioner and I don't know anyone who received £1400 monthly I personally only get £800

Blinkett · 29/09/2026 20:13

BigYellowBus · 29/09/2026 19:59

You do know we have pretty much the lowest state pension in Western Europe. That's not something to be proud of

We don’t.

EmpressStorm · 29/09/2026 20:10

State pension isn’t a pension scheme though. It’s a benefit.

GodDamnitDonut · 29/09/2026 20:14

The longer Labour are in power the higher the risk that one day they will actually try to introduce means testing. They need to be removed at the next opportunity.
