I can't find a good deodorant for my 12 year old.

And I was wondering if you might be able to help. My daughter is 12 and showers every day but after a day at school I can notice the smell of body odour on her which is far from ideal. All of her school shirts etc are washed daily and are fresh.

We have just started with deodorant and I have tried 'Wild' and 'Fussy'. Neither of which work. I have tried both of them too and found that they aren't any good for me either. Can anyone recommend a good deodorant or is it anti perspirant she needs that doesn't contain nasties? I have tried to stick to the natural route but if it isn't working I need to explore other ideas. Please help! I don't want her getting a hard time at school. Thank you.

Owner of a fairly stinky 11yo, they use Wild but only certain fragrances work! Also has to take it to school and periodically reapply

Hollowvoice · 29/09/2026 10:59

My 12yo uses a Tropic cream one, didn't want a spray and also didn't get on with Wild (which my eldest uses)

MrsShawnHatosy · 29/09/2026 11:00

Have you tried Mitchum Natural Power deodorant?

ScotiaLass · 29/09/2026 11:01

Following because I tried and failed to find an effective aluminium free solution for my twelve year old son. We tried Bulldog natural deodrant, Wild deodrant, Mitchum's natural power deodrant and none of these were effective. Realising that he actually needed an anti-perspirant I found the options for aluminum free very limited (I believe Fussy may do one but we didn't try it) so we ended up opting for a Nivea roll on which he is happy with and seems to do the job.

Flickitspinittwistitbopit · 29/09/2026 11:05

We use wave deodorant and find their antiperspirant best - whole family including stinky DP 😊

Think it's now available from boots too.

Smallbrowndog · 29/09/2026 11:05

Mitcham worked for my sin at this age - he preferred the roll on.

Smallbrowndog · 29/09/2026 11:08

Another thing is to make sure she washes her pits properly in the shower - Pears bar soap worked for mine.

It's a stinky stage!

Crumpelstiltskin · 29/09/2026 11:12

Agree about the washing. Is she using shower gel or soap? If she's using shower gel, she needs to start using soap as that will really help. Some of the natural deodorant brands may work then. If not, Sure stick is good (though not at all natural).

FairyBatman · 29/09/2026 11:14

Personally I found make waves to be much better than either Wild or Fussy. It’s an antiperspirant so helps at source rather than covering it up. It’s not aluminium free though.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 29/09/2026 11:27

Honestly the best ones are the ones that have the chemicals in - Sure, Dove, etc. Proper anti perspirants. I don’t think it’s worth worrying about the tiny amounts of various chemicals in them- if we’re all walking about next to cars and eating some processed stuff is it worth worrying about? My son is 14 and he’d really stink without Mitchum. (He does shower properly everyday etc but such is the teen years)!

Highlighta · 29/09/2026 11:41

Having had a teen dd with the exact same issue, this was quite well resolved in the shower. A plain body wash is not enough for the pits at this stage.

If you get her an antibacterial soap bar, the actual bar and she wash her armpits with the soap bar every day. Something like Dettol bar soap.

My dd ended up using Mitchum, but the men's version which she still uses now in her early 20s.

SydneyCarton · 29/09/2026 11:46

We've tried Pit Stop, which is a roll-on, and Bionsen in a pump spray. DD was less keen on Pit Stop but seems to have stuck with the Bionsen one - they're both deodorants rather than anti-perspirants.

wishingonastar101 · 29/09/2026 11:52

Onion soup armpits! We've been through that stage... I don't think the school uniform helps - all that synthetic material.

Anyway, wash with a bar of soap. We use Savon de Marseille because we are pretentious but they are lush.

And go full chemical roll on - Sure, Dove, Nivea.... don't waste your time with natural or spray. And stink-pits don't last forever.... the hormones pass.

Merseymum1980 · 29/09/2026 11:53

Shes defintley not diabetic is she,i had a real issue with sweating before my type 1 diagnosis at this age.
Mitchum is great and body shop aloe vera

SmallDFartyCarNRG · 29/09/2026 11:54

Haven;t read all the responses but is she washing her armpits with actual soap? She needs to clean the old bacteria off, which is what smells, and shower gels do not do this as well as soap. You can get antibacterial soap to try and hopefully that will help most deodorants work without having to mask the smells from the days before.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 29/09/2026 11:55

My daughter uses Biosen or salt of the earth

Sakura7 · 29/09/2026 11:57

It's because you're using natural deodorant and not an anti-persperant.

There's nothing wrong with Sure, Dove, Mitchum, etc, unless you have a particular sensitivity to them. They are not harmful. There were some nonsense scare stories a few decades ago about breast cancer which have been debunked.

Pinkflamingo10 · 29/09/2026 11:58

the only thing that works for me is Mitchum unscented. It’s an antiperspirant and so not a natural product like wild etc
it’s pretty amazing though. I find the spray better than the roll-on. I can’t stand any fragrance so unscented is the best imo.

dementedpixie · 29/09/2026 12:01

For goodness sake just get the poor child some antiperspirant so she's not the smelly kid at school!

rosierosierosie · 29/09/2026 12:04

Get her a proper anti-perspirant, the Mitchum roll on is amazing

FreddysFingers · 29/09/2026 12:06

I would try Pitrok, but there are loads of versions about, will link a couple OP 😊. The crystal lasts AGES- up to a year, and kills any bacteria that causes the body odour:

Does she smell at the weekend or just after school? It might be her shirts, rather than her body. Fresh sweat doesn’t usually smell, it’s when stale sweat from old clothes interacts with the new sweat that it smells. Regular washing doesn’t really help. You can buy tablets to add to your wash that may help, but sometimes you just need to buy new clothes.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/09/2026 12:23

Most popular at work is Dove cream/stick, followed by Sanex and Nivea. Because they work.

Agree with this. Nothing wrong with the normal stuff from supermarkets. We’ve all been using that stuff since we were that age.

This is somewhat dramatic.

Non bio soap powder.
A longer wash on 60 degrees
Bar soap on the pits in the shower
A proper anti perspirant

Imagine every parent of a teenager replacing their school uniform as they have a perfectly normal body function, ie sweating.
