I can't find a good deodorant for my 12 year old.

And I was wondering if you might be able to help. My daughter is 12 and showers every day but after a day at school I can notice the smell of body odour on her which is far from ideal. All of her school shirts etc are washed daily and are fresh.

We have just started with deodorant and I have tried 'Wild' and 'Fussy'. Neither of which work. I have tried both of them too and found that they aren't any good for me either. Can anyone recommend a good deodorant or is it anti perspirant she needs that doesn't contain nasties? I have tried to stick to the natural route but if it isn't working I need to explore other ideas. Please help! I don't want her getting a hard time at school. Thank you.

Mitcham worked for my sin at this age - he preferred the roll on.

Mitchum is the wonder deodorant for sure, but I think it's exactly the sort people are trying to avoid because of the ingredients.

Bottom line is I have not found a softly, softly no nasties deodorant that really works.

On balance, I decided I'd rather take my chances with deodorant chemicals than live a life of being the person who stinks! I can't imagine that being good for the MH or social prospects of a teen either.

I find Dove to be reasonably effective and it is certainly gentler than Mitchum. Though I personally love Mitchum.

I agree with pp's about using Dove etc. I spent a good few pounds on various 'natural' types but it was wasted money. My dd became self conscious and that disappeared once I relented and gave her a proper nice smelling antiperspirant.

I agree with this.

I also know a couple of mums who swear by certain chemical free brands mentioned here (not going to name and shame) and claim they work well.

They don't. Their dc are stinky, and I've noticed it on several occasions.

I found Mitchum works best for my 12 year old son applied at night after his shower and then again in the morning

Yup.

Driclor

Ds has been quite bad since age 10 and dd age 8 they’ve both used scrubbingtins put stop roll on deodorant and now switch between nivea roll ons and sands roll ons. They shower every other day and wash armpits every day with shower gel or black soap, then the moisturise with cream… change their top daily and pyjama tops often need to be daily too

monymonymony · 29/09/2026 18:47

Just use dove

Pasteldenataplease · 29/09/2026 19:20

I’ve never got on with Mitchum. Makes my underarms really dry and sore, and seems to leave residue on my clothes. All these natural brands were quite frankly shit as well. Felt like I walked around smelling like a steak & onion pie with a tiny hint of clean cotton.

I use Dove Pure bar soap under my arms in the shower, then any Dove roll-on/spray. Sometimes use a men’s one, as I find it more effective (especially when I’m hormonal!).
Any hot summer holidays abroad, I use Driclor.

Hankunamatata · 29/09/2026 19:26

She needs a good antiperspirant. I think solid creams work the best like sure or mitchum.

You may need to treat her school shirts as normal wash wont get bo out.

I used wild as its a deodorant but still get damp under the arms on hot day at work.

Def wash with soap not showergel. My boys love Bob soap as applicator gets into pits and exfoliates too

There's nothing wrong with the ingredients in Mitchum or any other standard antiperspirant.

The villification of these products based on no clinical evidence is bizarre.

desperatemum1234 · 29/09/2026 19:36

My DD likes Dove spray deodorants, I buy them online from Superdrug.

I think people worry about aluminium in particular, but I don't think there is evidence that it absorbs much through the skin. It is designed to sit as a surface layer.

Some young skins get rashes but Dove is gentle in that regard.

GFBurger · 29/09/2026 19:59

Perspiguard shower gel is great for smelly teens.

Gem Anti-Perspirant also appears to actually work where Sure & Dove haven’t.

People worry because they heard bullshit scare stories in the 90s and never bothered to check if there was any truth to them.

There is no evidence of a link between aluminium in antiperspirants and cancer. They are perfectly safe to use.

IronEverything · 29/09/2026 20:06

Forget the natural ones. She can't be walking around stinking just because you want to avoid chemicals.

Is she scrubbing herself with a flannel or something? Washing with just her hands won't clean her properly.

That's good because I am always covered in it!

I did try to avoid it during pregnancy and saved it for "special occasions"! Then I'd come home and wash it off. But thankfully one of the pregnancy hormone responses for me was a marked lack of BO. It's like that side of me shut down and I was all milky.

lechatdhenri · 29/09/2026 20:14

Have you tried the wild roll on? It’s an antiperspirant and I was surprised to find it’s really good.
I would look at how well she’s actually washing - she probably needs to use a flannel. And wash her shirts using laundry sanitizer in case the smell is actually trapped in the clothing fibres.

Try Sure Women’s Maximum Protection.

CherryKerry · 29/09/2026 21:11

I would get her some proper antiperspirant. Deodorant is just an armpit perfume. The damage done by being avoided by her classmates for being the smellie kid will be far more damaging than a few chemicals.

Rainbowx · 29/09/2026 21:57

Dettol soap bar and dove cream or roll on, do morning and night as night best time for deo to work.

The only one that works is the dove original blue stick cream one. It’s brilliant

DumpedByText · 29/09/2026 22:38

I've tried Wild and Fussy, I smelt like onions, they did nothing for me. I'm now using Make Waves and it's honestly the best deodorant I've ever used. Very subtle smell, and keeps me fresh and dry all day.

I didn't even smell after a very very hot day walking around Barcelona!

MaryFromGlasgow · 29/09/2026 22:41

Mitchum, not the natural one.

SpinningLikeAGirlInABrandNewDress · 29/09/2026 22:42

Had the same issue with my DD at that age. Solution was:-

  • Mitchum deodorant
  • Wash pits and bits with soap - she loves Imperial Leather
  • Use Laundry Anti-Bac in the shirt wash - I use Lidls own make

Hope that helps

MabelAnderson · 29/09/2026 22:43

WestwardHo1 · 29/09/2026 12:49

I tried the Fussy lime one and it made me and my clothes smell far worse than if I'd used none at all. It was hard to describe the stink on my clothes but nothing got rid of it until a hot wash with strong disinfectant.

Make sure she uses proper soap not shower gel. Then a proper roll on.

I don’t sweat much and I’m not usually stinky, and always in natural fibres, but the fussy made my clothes smell horrible. I think it’s the greasy base. It took a lot of effort to get the smell out.
