I can't find a good deodorant for my 12 year old.

And I was wondering if you might be able to help. My daughter is 12 and showers every day but after a day at school I can notice the smell of body odour on her which is far from ideal. All of her school shirts etc are washed daily and are fresh.

We have just started with deodorant and I have tried 'Wild' and 'Fussy'. Neither of which work. I have tried both of them too and found that they aren't any good for me either. Can anyone recommend a good deodorant or is it anti perspirant she needs that doesn't contain nasties? I have tried to stick to the natural route but if it isn't working I need to explore other ideas. Please help! I don't want her getting a hard time at school. Thank you.

Sure roll on - 72 hour protection. Non of these natural deodorants can match an antiperspirant.

There is nothing worse than stale BO 🤢I had to make a complaint about one of my mother’s care givers the other week because she stank the house out when she came.

Mitchum but the spray not the roll on

We all use the Mitchum cream stick, including my 12yo DS and it works for all of us.
I got it for my DSD when she was about 12 as well actually, when she was coming home from school smelling of body odour. Worked for her

Wash first with anti bac soap, normal shower gel then deodorant. Mitchum has been a life saver for my teenager

I don’t sweat much and I’m not usually stinky, and always in natural fibres, but the fussy made my clothes smell horrible. I think it’s the greasy base. It took a lot of effort to get the smell out.

I think it might be the coconut oil.

Zaylok · 30/09/2026 11:33

Yes, have extensively tested options for our DS on this and have found that Native stick deodorant with a spray over the top absolutely eliminates smell. Please be careful with Mitcham, it is very strong and if over used can cause major irritation.

Ben and Anna brand actually works. Is natural and uses bicarbonate of soda as its active ingredient.

I use Fussy, it works very well for me, does a reasonable job of keeping me dry too and I’ve never noticed it makes my clothes smell.

Wexone · 30/09/2026 12:08

Michtium all the way - as others say wash with soap not shower gel. also check her shirts. if its polyester go buy new ones that are proper cotton. polyester clothing is basically plastic clothing it makes you sweat but doesn't absorb it at all. just sits on top of the material creating more smells.
if it keeps persisting over the years after doing the above you can look into botox for underarms - thats a game changer

Bluebellsparklypant · 30/09/2026 12:08

Another thing is to make sure she washes her pits properly in the shower - Pears bar soap worked for mine

absolutely this, there’s a little bit of a natural curve in your armpit which can hold on to smells. I sure you’ve gone through this with her OP but it’s always worth highlighting

Mitchum solid stick is bombproof IME. And less messy than spray or roll on.

AKT and Nuud are the best natural deodorants I've tried but on active days it has to be anti perspirant.

EmeraldDreams73 · 30/09/2026 15:10

Mitchum is great (roll on, then have the matching spray for occasional top ups after PE etc if allowed). But careful of the varieties, one of them causes my DD awful blotches under her arms, others are fine.

We tried everything under the sun with two stinky dds as teens lol. Eventually it was a combination of really good washing in shower (not just a quick swish with shower gel, they needed a flannel or similar - yes I had to supervise once or twice to drum it in!), Mitchum (put on last thing at night after a shower and before bed), and lots of experimenting with laundry as well, I found school shirts tended to smell after a while whatever I did.

These days they're both on top of it but it was a stressful few months as nobody wants to be That Person at school but we had to try a lot of options before we found one that worked properly!

There's a few things that can be used in conjunction with the deodorant: proper washing of armpits with soap but, as a pp said, I've come to believe that only anti-perspirants work.

Though if I'm having a quiet day and not going out I'll just scrub the armpits well with dettol soap and leave it at that.

There's a slight odour if I run my finger against my armpit and sniff but nothing noticeable but if you need not to smell at all anti-perspirants is best.

Also the smell of perfume and body odour is particularly rank.

There's no getting around it, if you really DO need to make sure you don't smell at all, anti-perspirants are the only way.
