I can't find a good deodorant for my 12 year old.

And I was wondering if you might be able to help. My daughter is 12 and showers every day but after a day at school I can notice the smell of body odour on her which is far from ideal. All of her school shirts etc are washed daily and are fresh.

We have just started with deodorant and I have tried 'Wild' and 'Fussy'. Neither of which work. I have tried both of them too and found that they aren't any good for me either. Can anyone recommend a good deodorant or is it anti perspirant she needs that doesn't contain nasties? I have tried to stick to the natural route but if it isn't working I need to explore other ideas. Please help! I don't want her getting a hard time at school. Thank you.

Why not give her a deodorant/anti perspirant that actually works? What do you mean by “nasties”?

Catza · 29/09/2026 12:38

Reluctance to use anti-perspirants with aluminum salts are based on some scientific papers which later were proven to be of no statistical value in meta-analyses. So please get your child some industrial strength deodorant and don't worry about it. Her chances of developing Alzheimer's and breast cancer due to deodorant use are far far smaller (borderline non-existent) than her chances of being vilified at school for having body odour.

I noticed it with my husband’s sports kit. He was stinking out the gym every time he worked out. Washing the tops on a usual cycle didn’t work. The tablets did. They’re not expensive. I think you’re being dramatic by calling it dramatic.

Sweating IS a natural bodily function which is why we shouldn’t try to prevent it, just treat the unpleasant smell.

Tcateh · 29/09/2026 12:40

Sanex roll on, the peach coloured one.

nc42day · 29/09/2026 12:42

Proper scrub with bar of old fashioned soap and flannel (also applies to bum cracks, necks, ears and and feet) followed by an anti antiperspirant. Not a rub around with shower gel and deodorant.

YourLoudEagle · 29/09/2026 12:46

my 14 year old uses Nivea for men deodorant roll on and in the summer the spray version. this has worked for us. its gentle on his skin as well.

LoveSkaMusic · 29/09/2026 12:48

Long term Mitchum user here. However, my kids managed to overpower even that.

This stuff worked though: Sure Women Maximum Protection

I tried the Fussy lime one and it made me and my clothes smell far worse than if I'd used none at all. It was hard to describe the stink on my clothes but nothing got rid of it until a hot wash with strong disinfectant.

Make sure she uses proper soap not shower gel. Then a proper roll on.

mummyof2boys30 · 29/09/2026 12:51

Dove mens 72hr one. I go to gym daily and best ive tried.

WestwardHo1 · 29/09/2026 12:51

Anyway, wash with a bar of soap. We use Savon de Marseille because we are pretentious but they are lush.

Love this comment 😂

ToadRage · 29/09/2026 12:56

Which wild did you try? I didn't get on with solid stuff but i really like the roll-on. In my youth the best antiperspirant i had was Nivea 48h protectection. Dove was also good.

3luckystars · 29/09/2026 12:57

Black Sure is the only job for this.

A woman at my sons school tipped me off as she has load of teenage boys.

Maybeitllneverhappen · 29/09/2026 13:01

I agree Mitchum is great.

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 29/09/2026 13:01

Antiperspirant all the way, not some arty farty natural stick. No one is going to die from "nasties" in a deodorant unless you've got some underlying health condition. Buy her a proper antiperspirant, don't let her be the smelly kid, for goodness sake.

Why shouldn't we try to prevent it? I don't like feeling sweaty or smelling and an anti-persperant prevents that. So what's the problem?

PearlieQueen · 29/09/2026 13:05

Spraying shirt armpits with a white vinegar spray before washing helps with niffs as well

user593 · 29/09/2026 13:07

Nuud is excellent, but a little fiddly to apply. No need to do it every day though.

Somewherenorthofhere · 29/09/2026 13:10

Anither vote for mitchum. I even use the mens version!

Also briefly soak the armpits of clothes in bicarb before washing.

MabelAnderson · 29/09/2026 13:19

Are her shirts cotton ? If not get pure cotton ones as any polyester holds smells.
I use AKT deodorant, it works well for me, and it works for one of my daughters too (19) , but isn’t enough for older dd (21) who prefers an antiperspirant. She uses the Estrid ones as the scents are nice.
At 12 I got dd1 the bionsen deodorant, and also the glossier deodorant when she was a little bit older. It’s worth trying the AKT one, it’s a cream in a tube, but it might be that she does need an antiperspirant, especially in hotter weather or on days when she has sports.

MabelAnderson · 29/09/2026 13:21

Oh and as everyone has said, soap to wash with not shower gel, and make sure she washes well . If she showers in the mornings it’s not an issue, but if she showers after school she should put on deodorant afterwards and again in the morning.

Ophy83 · 29/09/2026 13:28

Daise is aluminium free (so deodorant rather than anti perspirant) and the fragrances are lovely. I am also a fan of Tropic deodorant, which was one of the few things I found that worked when I was breastfeeding (for some reason the hormones made me super stinky)

19lottie82 · 29/09/2026 13:30

Use a puff scrubber thing on the shower as well with good soap.

grinandslothit · 29/09/2026 14:38

Some type of scrubber with a decent bar soap then apply lemon juice afterwards. Then a proper antiperspirant

bababamama · 29/09/2026 15:00

Mitcham works well

wontsomeonethinkofthechimdren · 29/09/2026 15:04

Just buy Sure, not the expensive faffy ones (although I have waves and it's brilliant!) Wild is utterly useless.
