AIBU to think they were overreacting to my initial necklace?

I was at a meal with family and friends of family yesterday. I wore a necklace with my partners and children’s initials on.

A friend of the family asked what the initials were for an I told her, although as she knows my partners and children’s names, I think she already knew. She asked why I would have my partners initial and went on a rant about not needing to be owned and that he hadn’t even married me and given me a ring, yet I ‘wear his name on me’. 😳 I said it’s just a necklace, they’re quite popular, I like it and she’s reading too much into it. Later on she started talking about it again with someone else so that I could hear and the other woman was agreeing with her.

What would you think? Do people really see an initial or name of their partner on a piece of jewellery as some sort of ownership and non feminist stance or are these women as strange as I think they are.

I’ll still wear my necklace either way, I just wondered what others thought. I have lots of personalised jewellery, I even have one with my dogs names on.

As for ‘him not marrying me’, that was my choice. We have been together for 25 years and are very happy.

Get a necklace with 'fuck off judgy pants' on it to wear next time you see her.

This... the best response.

What rude horrible woman.. So judgemental. Trying to make you feel bad for not being married.
Absolutely stupid.
Not a sign of ownership. Presumably you've got the intials of all the people you love on your necklace. Nothing wrong with that.

lucasnorth · 28/09/2026 18:23

Am I the only person who was intrigued to find out what the ‘subsequent’ necklace was 🤪
anyway apart from making my chuckle at my own idiocy, yes she was ridiculous

wildnwilde · 28/09/2026 18:24

She's a silly twat . Laugh at her and eye roll .

Horses7 · 28/09/2026 18:24

I consider myself a feminist and your friend is talking utter tosh. Wear what you want!!

pizzaHeart · 28/09/2026 18:27

Was she drunk or on glue?
I don’t have any name necklaces myself but I don’t give a damn about what necklaces other people wear. And I think that how it’s supposed to be in normal life.

BillieWiper · 28/09/2026 18:27

How odd someone would think that it's possible to be owned by a person by way of wearing a necklace. Unless it's a bondage thing and they're tying you up with a chain?
This person is clearly having their own pretty severe issues.

She’d hate me: I’ve got my DH and DD names tattooed on me. What a waste of air I am

Came on to say the same thing!

(although I haven’t got your DHs name tattooed obviously!!)

momtoboys · 28/09/2026 18:49

I have jewelry with my children's initials on it. However, I would think we have grown out of the wear the boyfriends name on me phase at around 15yo.

BrainSoup · 28/09/2026 18:52

They’re a bit Elizabeth Duke but each to their own.

Hotterthebetter · 28/09/2026 18:54

She’d hate me. I have my DH initial tattooed on me. Twice 😂 Once along with my initial and once together with the childrens.
And I have my dog’s paw print and her name tattooed on me as well.

What? People wearing jewellery as a visible sign of commitment to a long term partner?! Shocking. 😆

This Is what I was going to say!

Where what you want op. I’m ‘owned’ by Hermès.

EricTheHalfASleeve · 28/09/2026 19:01

I have family initials on jewellery and think it's sweet - unless you're hiding the fact that your partner's name is Brian & kid is James - in which case the necklace could be misinterpreted!

That’s a bit of a cunty thing to say but each to their own.

Most of my personalised jewellery has been handmade by a friend who has her own jewellery business, but so what if was from Argos or whatever. Nothing worse than snobs.

Thanks everyone. Some of these comments have really made me laugh. I will wear my necklaces knowing there is always someone judging them as naff, tacky, being too Elizabeth Duke and that they wouldn’t personally wear it. 😂

I love that others have their pets initials on their jewellery.

The Princess of Wales wears a necklace with the initials of her three children. She is very classy. No question about that!

C152 · 28/09/2026 19:33

Well, I would think it's unusual to wear a name/initial necklace of your partner as well as your children, but I wouldn't care enough to comment.

PrettySummerEvening · 28/09/2026 16:34

Why do you even need to say that on here? OP didn’t ask whether you thought they were tacky or naff. I think you would get on with those women well, getting little digs in to make yourself feel better. 😂🤡

Well said!

Millytante · 28/09/2026 16:18

You think you have problems? I have my cats’ initials on a silver chain.

Tell that rude wagon that not only have you a charm of his initial, but you have ‘Dwayne’ (your secret sexy nickname for DP) tattooed across your coccyx. 🤣

You’ve just given me the perfect idea for a Christmas gift for me from DH 🐾

bananaapplepears · 28/09/2026 16:32

I don't see them as an ownership issue but I do think they're naff and tacky. I'd never have said anything to you in person though.

I have a necklace with my baby twin boys names on the pendant. They died in the NICU 3 years ago this November. It cost very little but its one of the most precious things I own. I wear it everyday and somedays when I'm feeling very low, I hold it in my fingers. Helps with the grief. I'd hate to think people would think its tacky but then again if thats their biggest worry in life, its not worth me getting odd over it.

I am so sorry 💐

MyArtfulGreySloth · 28/09/2026 21:28

I’d wear my kids initials but not my husbands, seems a bit odd to me.

shadowsinthegroceryline · 28/09/2026 16:58

Of course she was being ridiculous, judgemental and downright rude and you do not owe her any explanation.
However, if you did want to waste any more time on this individual then perhaps point her towards the wise words of Taylor Swift, in her beautiful song 'Call It What You Want'
"I Want to wear his initials on a chain round my neck, not because he owns me but cause he really knows me."

literally came here for this!!!
