AIBU to think they were overreacting to my initial necklace?

I was at a meal with family and friends of family yesterday. I wore a necklace with my partners and children’s initials on.

A friend of the family asked what the initials were for an I told her, although as she knows my partners and children’s names, I think she already knew. She asked why I would have my partners initial and went on a rant about not needing to be owned and that he hadn’t even married me and given me a ring, yet I ‘wear his name on me’. 😳 I said it’s just a necklace, they’re quite popular, I like it and she’s reading too much into it. Later on she started talking about it again with someone else so that I could hear and the other woman was agreeing with her.

What would you think? Do people really see an initial or name of their partner on a piece of jewellery as some sort of ownership and non feminist stance or are these women as strange as I think they are.

I’ll still wear my necklace either way, I just wondered what others thought. I have lots of personalised jewellery, I even have one with my dogs names on.

As for ‘him not marrying me’, that was my choice. We have been together for 25 years and are very happy.

Or say "these are the initials of my loved ones - that's why yours isn't there"

MajorProcrastination · 28/09/2026 17:07

Most people I know with similar jewellery only have their children's initials on there, not their partner's BUT I wouldn't give two hoots either way - it's none of her business and it's not that deep!

It's not controlling! I have friends who've experienced actual coercive control and that's not what it looks like.

cantthinkofagoodusername2026 · 28/09/2026 17:16

Is this 'friend' married, and if so, did she change her surname? I'd ask her about that.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 28/09/2026 17:20

I do sometimes wonder why people have to continue to find fault with others once something that concerns no one else has been thoroughly explained them.

Is their own life so empty or awful that they try so hard to make others feel shite about what they choose to do with theirs, won't in anyway improve the life of the one that does it, just show how bitter and spiteful they can be.

The only ownership I see in this is the bracelet belongs to you.

VielleTruite · 28/09/2026 17:21

It's absolutely nobody's business but yours. I have a Pandora bracelet full of charms, including initials, which I wear when we go out. Each charm has its own little story. We can take our precious jewellery off when we go to bed, but unfortunately these miserable people are stuck with their horrid personalities. Wear your necklace with pride and don't give these dismal nobodies another thought.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 28/09/2026 17:21

She is absolutely batshit.

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/09/2026 17:23

I'd never consider wearing my husband's initials, I think people who do are odd. I'd keep that all to myself because I do so many odd things actually judging and commenting is far odder.

ClaredeBear · 28/09/2026 17:27

Gosh, it’s not the necklace you need to get rid of! She doesn’t sound very nice at all.

MyMilchick · 28/09/2026 17:28

What a ridiculous thing for her to get wound up about. She should mind her own business

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 28/09/2026 17:28

She’d hate me: I’ve got my DH and DD names tattooed on me. What a waste of air I am

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/09/2026 17:33

I’d tell her to piss off and mind her own business. Some people get tattoos, ffs!

GreyBeeplus3 · 28/09/2026 17:34

@NamesOnANecklace
The other woman she was loudly discussing this with is a prat too
Or just agreeing with her to keep the peace?
Either way Your so-called "friend" is a knob
And needs to get herself another hobby rather than berate others over their personal attire choices.
Would I be right in assuming that she dresses immaculately with tasteful discreet jewellery from all the top designers herself?
Whilst wearing a solid diamond engagement ring upon her finger, topped with a platinum band?

AmyDudley · 28/09/2026 16:20

Get a necklace with 'fuck off judgy pants' on it to wear next time you see her.

this

Ilovemyfam · 28/09/2026 17:36

I wouldn't be surprised if the other woman was agreeing just to get out of the conversation with crazy woman.

Caniweartheseones · 28/09/2026 17:37

It looks like you own them 😆 Very silly of her

theblame · 28/09/2026 17:41

I’m wearing a ring with my old horses hair in and another that’s from the Romeo and Juliet film with the initials. God knows what she would think of me!

Clarinet1 · 28/09/2026 17:44

I think we are all entitled to our own
preferences and I also think it’s quite sweet to wear a little tribute to the people you love best. I think we are definitely not entitled to run down other people’s choices, especially in their hearing!

Millytante · 28/09/2026 16:18

You think you have problems? I have my cats’ initials on a silver chain.

Tell that rude wagon that not only have you a charm of his initial, but you have ‘Dwayne’ (your secret sexy nickname for DP) tattooed across your coccyx. 🤣

Everyone already knows that cats own us. I'm a 21st Century slave.

AutumnLoverButNotYet · 28/09/2026 17:49

NamesOnANecklace · 28/09/2026 16:11

Reading that back, it sounds even more ridiculous. 😬😅

You're right it does!! she's a complete and utter idiot, just ignore the silly cow.

It's a necklace, that's all.... a necklace where you have your families initials on it, the way she's carrying on you think you've got them tattooed on your forehead by a caveman!!

dontforgetofeedthecat · 28/09/2026 17:49

I'd be wondering what is making so miserable and judgemental 😂

StayGoldenPonyGirl · 28/09/2026 17:52

I have a gorgeous bracelet that was a promotional free gift with a Britney Spears perfume...has 'Lucky' on it. Very proud to be owned by Britney 😊

mixingplaydoh · 28/09/2026 17:55

It’s funny as I have one of these necklaces, and I hunted quite hard to find one that could have my own initial alongside that of the DCs and DH. But I would never be such an arse to say something judgy to someone who had a different necklace initial arrangement 😬

5128gap · 28/09/2026 18:04

She wanted to be spiteful, and hiding spite behind 'a feminist principle' makes it less obvious.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 28/09/2026 18:09

Blimey if an initial on a necklace is an indication of possession then my DH has been sporting those symbols for 21 years - key rings with the kids photos on (via school) or the key ring with a coin for each of us minted in the year of each of our births (yeah, it’s twee, but he’s used if for over 15 years)? Is tIs the coaster/mousemat/etc (also via school) a sign of possession? If so, we’ve done well claiming him as our cash cow and economic slave.

Does her husband never buy her gifts?

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 28/09/2026 18:14

I’d like to be kind and think that maybe this woman was having a really bad day or problems generally in her relationship - and that you, happily together and unmarried, disturbed her peace in some inexplicable and unreasonable way.
