What the hell to wear in England?

Live abroad, very hot, still in shorts and flip flops.
Visiting England in a week. Dm tells me we can all wear shorts as still warm, but pack jumpers and hooded raincoats too

I'm so confused

What’s confusing? It rains a lot and it gets cold.

Your mum is also wrong; you’ll have no need for shorts.

I’ve been wearing shorts all week. It depends where OP is going. I’m in London. It has been unusually warm.

Yes, unfortunately you can experience 4 seasons in one day here!....so please pack accordingly;)

It’s going to be 22 degrees a few days this week where I live and that’s shorts weather for me. But then I have. Friend who would wear a jumper in that!

Epoisses · 28/09/2026 06:58

We are in Wales this week. 23 forecast tomorrow! I've got cotton trousers, tshirts and thin cardis. Plus waterproof and fleece.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/09/2026 07:14

I’m in Cornwall and there are quite a lot of people wearing shorts but i think that’s more because they’re in holiday mode. I’d say wear jeans/trousers and have a jumper in case you get cold.

LlynTegid · 28/09/2026 07:18

There are men who wear shorts all year round. Usually either those out exercising or overweight men.

The current fashion for women's shorts that match men just looks awful for anyone, male or female. If you are in jeans or trousers it will look better and prepare you for whatever the weather is.

SnapAndTap · 28/09/2026 07:18

If you live somewhere very hot, it isnt shorts weather in the uk.
You may well see locals in shorts - the afternoons can be pleasant right now. But you have aclimitised to different temperatures. I definitely suggest trousers, teeshirts, and having a jumper available. Also, a waterproof coat.

MiddleAgedDread · 28/09/2026 07:21

I wore shorts at weekend and I live way up north. Haven’t worn anything thicker than a tshirt and hoodie and haven’t worn a coat other than my waterproof jacket. That said, it’s looking a lot cooler this coming week and it’s noticeably fresher in the mornings and evenings.

Or postmen 🤣

When you go out here there'll alwAys be a few folk wrapped up in puffer coats alongside folks in shorts and flip flops! Depends how you feel the cold?

Sartre · 28/09/2026 07:27

Not sure on Cornwall but I’d imagine it’s typically warmer than Yorkshire and here it’s definitely still been shorts weather. Typically cold first thing and overnight but by 10/11 am it’s roasting. It’s 22 degrees today and tomorrow here for example.

Ineffable23 · 28/09/2026 07:31

At this time of year I would probably go with either a pair of shorts + a couple of pairs of trousers or dresses and a pair of tights/leggings. Add an optional jumper and a raincoat and that's you're outfits sorted. I might chuck a vest in.

The trouble is that we're in that time of year where one day you might be happily throwing yourself in the sea and the next day you want to huddle inside around a fire! Mainly pretty warm here though (East Anglia) - we've been sitting outside for dinner with no coat or jacket fairly regularly still.

5128gap · 28/09/2026 07:34

Yesterday I went out for the day. I worse jeans, trainers, a t shirt with a light cardi on top and a shower proof, wind proof jacket. By 12 I took the jacket off, and by 2 I took the cardi off. At 4 the cardi was back on and by 6, so was the jacket. I had my sun glasses on and off as need arose, and at one point it rained heavily for about 20 minutes, so was glad of my umbrella.
My shorts are all packed away. Even on the rare occasion it might now reach the mid 20s, its only in the late afternoon so I'd rather be a bit warm in jeans for an hour or so than spend most of the day chilly.
It varies by region though. I'm in the middle.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/09/2026 07:35

Plenty of people wearing shorts in London yesterday. Shorts with a hoodie or light jumper is a common British spring/autumn outfit.

I'm in the SE of England and yesterday I wore jeans, birkenstocks and a t shirt. I took a light waterproof jacket but didn't need to put it on unti about 7pm.

Bjorkdidit · 28/09/2026 07:40

UK weather is changeable and people have different tolerance to temperature. Also varies hugely across even small areas and clothing is activity dependant.

Therefore you need layers and be prepared for rain most of the time. Otherwise you're likely to find yourself inappropriately dressed sooner or later.

If you're used to hot settled weather for weeks on end, you've likely missed it here for this year.

MrsCarson · 28/09/2026 07:40

When I lived in a hot area and used to visit this tie of year I wore jeans and tee shirts and had fleeces and jackets.
Even now I'm in UK and wearing jeans and tees and a hoodie this week with trainers and even wore a thin coat one day. So those in UK still wearing shorts, chances are, are not used to living in constant heat this summer was pretty hot though

She’s wrong.

Nope you are

Burgerkingburgersarebetter · 27/09/2026 21:53

This is what's confusing me. My plan was jeans/trousers and long sleeved tops. She said also t shirts and shorts as still warm

Which part of the Uk?

In the South East, your mum is right . Some days are warm and a bit muggy still so bring a t shirt or ligher top and trousers. I wouldn't bother with many very light summer clothes but something where you can take layers off in low to mid 20 deg weather. I went for a countryside walk yesterday in summery very thin trousers and a t shirt . It was very overcast so I grabbed a thin summer rain jacket. I ended up with I tied around my waist as the sun came out and I felt hot. The people I passed were in a mix of trousers and shorts and t shirts or long sleeve shirts. Nobody had a jacket but the forecast was 30% chance of rain so might possibly have been needed

Shorts, tshirt. walking booots and a thin waterproof jacket is common attire on British summer holidays in the countryside and still is in early autumn. It will get colder by the end of October though , usually

dontthreatenmewithagoodtime · 28/09/2026 07:47

I'm in the SE of the UK and it's still rather (unseasonably warm). I have been wearing shorts and tshirts.

Would suggest lighter clothing, such as leggings, tops, thin cardies, thin coats, trainers and sandals. Pack a pair of shorts, why not!

lessglittermoremud · 28/09/2026 07:47

I’m in the Southwest and have been in 3/4 leggings and t-shirts all week, with only a need for a jumper first thing on the school run and for the evening dog walk.
It’s definitely been too hot for jeans, my kids are still wandering around in shorts and t-shirts and only popping on a jumper in the mornings, we’re about 30 mins from the coast.

Extraenergyneeded · 28/09/2026 07:48

For the last fortnight I have worn long trousers and a T shirt sometimes with a gilet when walking outside and occasionally a jumper.

Screamingabdabz · 28/09/2026 07:48

I still pack full on winter gear even if I’m going to Cornwall in summer. You just never know. I’d say it’s getting autumnal now. Still lovely and warm in the sunny bits of the day but coastal breezes might make it cooler. You need annoying layers I’m afraid.

bumblingbovine49 · 28/09/2026 07:55

The thing you really need in the UK is a small bag to have an umbrella or rain jacket and extra thin layer with you at all times . I hate being cold and wet but also dont like being too hot so for my 62 years born and bred here, I nearly always have one or two of these with me.

Although very hot this summer, the thing I really appreciated was there was no need to think about what to wear much. Just as little as I could decently get away with was the rule. Now we are back to the ' what the hell shall I wear today?' questions , which are particularly accute in Autumn and Spring i find

Topseyt123 · 28/09/2026 02:33

Yes, a couple of different types. What is your question? What is so hard to understand about that?

Sorry, it wasn't clear was it.

It makes me chuckle when posters spell things out like that, as if the OP's problem was "I Don't Know What Warm Tops Are"

Tortephant · 28/09/2026 08:04

Shorts will be ok some days, for us, but you are used to very hot so will probably find it too cold for you.

thats the point here. Your bodies view of hot to ours is different.

bring a pair of shorts but also layers and expect to wear jeans/trousers
