Live abroad, very hot, still in shorts and flip flops.
Visiting England in a week. Dm tells me we can all wear shorts as still warm, but pack jumpers and hooded raincoats too

I'm so confused

Try looking at a weather app. Revolutionary.

This! It’s all you need.

mondaytosunday · 27/09/2026 22:44

It’s going to be 25 in London on Tuesday and 20-22 rest of the week. That’s warmer than usual. Depends where you’re going. You will be acclimatised to warmer weather so may find it colder than your DM.

PickledMuffin · 27/09/2026 22:45

All seasons would be my go to for this country!

Denim4ever · 27/09/2026 22:48

It's basically still summer. 20 is a summer temp if not a heatwave summer in Cornwall. People who don't have kids have been on 'summer hols'/'annual vacation' in Cornwall, Scotland et al in September for as long as I can remember. Socks don't go on until mid Oct these days

Alwayswonderedwhy · 27/09/2026 22:48

What do you usually do when you travel to a different country? I assumed everyone just looked at the weather forecast. You know it's not going to be boiling hot or freezing cold so just bog standard clothing really.

momager22 · 27/09/2026 22:50

if you’re wearing shorts I’d wear with trainers and a sweatshirt rather than sandals and vest.
its sort of ‘one or the other’ weather for me - I.e if I’m wearing Birkenstocks I’m taking a jumper but if I’m wearing trainers I can get away with a very light jacket on top half.

BrightLemonHam · 27/09/2026 21:54

She’s wrong.

I wore shorts and sandals today, still warm in Sussex.

5682Jhd · 27/09/2026 22:53

Layers op, I’d bring for a week, 2 pairs of jeans, 2 trousers, short sleeve tops one rain jacket and tops you can layer over if needed like cardigans/sweaters,a dress and a denim jacket.

SpreadsheetLife · 27/09/2026 22:55

I'm in the North West - I had jeans on yesterday and really regretted it, was pouring with sweat! However today I was wearing fleece lined leggings, a sweater and a raincoat. I've found in cooler in the mornings and evenings but hot in the sun, it's also been quite wet and muggy. I would bring layers - tshirts/vests and light cardigans, leggings.

metalstrawsarecoldbutnotsoggy · 27/09/2026 22:56

I live here and I have no clue what to wear most days. 🤪

The last few days it has started out chilly but then the sun comes out and I’m roasting. But all of a sudden the sun goes behind a cloud and it’s windy. Today was sunny and not cold but almost warmish to start with but then it went grey and started drizzling. But it was too hot for a rain coat. Then I went for a walk by the sea (shade temp 20) but it was windy and I was very happy I brought my coat. 🤣

Poppingby · 27/09/2026 22:58

Shorts and jumpers! And rugged watery sandal things. That's what you wear in Cornwall. Then you can clamber on rocks, have a paddle and build a Sandcastle without having to roll your trousers up but still be warm when the wind picks up. As it always does.

I'm in the NE and was wearing a lovely warm waterproof coat while I watched DS play football today. Perfect with the sideways wind and rain.

That is weirdly very appealing, I have to say!

LoserWinner · 27/09/2026 23:15

If you’re fully acclimatised to a warm climate, you’ll find it colder than people who live here all the time. If by any chance you decide you need a t-shirt, you’ll be able to buy a couple cheaply, so don’t bother packing any. Whilst some people wear shorts (my postman does all year round), you won’t need them - jeans will be fine. There’s no danger of your being too hot in Cornwall in late Sept/October.

FourCatMama · 28/09/2026 00:29

When I go it’s always freezing ass cold!!

Hayley1256 · 28/09/2026 00:34

I would pack warm things but also some t-shirts and short. Where I am in Yorkshire we are having some typical British weather at the moment. Feels like 3 seasons in one day. Yesterday I went out before 10am on jeans, t-shirt and light weight coat - I felt a bit chilly. On my way back at 12ish I was boiling and had to take the coat off. Went out again at 5ish in dress because it was lovely in the sun but then was freezing in the shade. Last night felt very cold so I put cozy PJ's on for bed.

This time of year can be warm when the sun is out but cold when it's not so shorts and a hoody isn't as daft as it sounds.

TotHappy · 28/09/2026 00:45

Even in Cornwall there’s no one answer. I’m in the mid west, near the north coast, and wouldn’t be wearing shorts now. Longish dress maybe but definitely a jacket. Agree the afternoons have been warmer but then you just take the jacket off. Wind’s forecast to pick up this week and we might see the start of the autumn storms. It’s been hella foggy too, definitely bring a coat.
oh and you might not be able to buy T-shirts since there aren’t many shops, except supermarkets I guess.

I'm UK. That makes perfect sense to me.
Basically, it's still fairly warm so you'll be fine wearing shorts. Just be aware that even if it's nice and warm and something like 19 degrees today, tomorrow it might be 10 degrees, blowing a gale, bloody freezing and pelting it down with rain. 😭😁
So come prepared for all eventualities.
Shorts, trousers, cotton tops, a jumper, raincoat, umbrella and sunglasses lol

Topseyt123 · 28/09/2026 01:09

I have just returned from a holiday in Mallorca and haven't found the drop in temperature too pronounced this time. I'm in the South East (Essex) and it has been a pleasant low twenties in the day here, so shorts and a t-shirt with a cardigan for evening.

The UK weather can be very changeable though. I'd want to have a choice from: a couple of pairs of jeans/trousers, a couple of pairs of shorts, some t-shirts, cardigans, a hoodie/jumper and a lightweight jacket. Trainers as footwear. Maybe one pair of good sandals in case the weather is good and warm (still can be sometimes at this time of year).

Basically, pack something for all eventualities.

LathkillDale · 27/09/2026 21:57

ITA! We live in the South and it’s forecast nice for the next fourteen days, but the temperature will drop quite a bit in the evenings. I’d be thinking long trousers, plus a jumper/cardigan/sweatshirt/hoody to cover the evenings at least. A waterproof coat of some sort is always handy in England!

Of course, we can go out in March, when it’s freezing and see people in shorts; but they are a strange minority!

The North is noticeably colder by a few degrees at any time! It depends on where you are going?

a jumper/cardigan/sweatshirt/hoody

So.... a warm top then.

Yes, a couple of different types. What is your question? What is so hard to understand about that?

GarlicSomething · 28/09/2026 02:47

As you're coming from a much warmer environment, it's going to feel bloody cold even in the most sheltered corner of Cornwall. Yes to the layers, no to the shorts. Bring socks.

No, to me, a top is a t shirt or tunic or something like a blouse, possibly with long sleeves if it’s “warm”. I don’t call jumpers, etc tops.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 28/09/2026 03:58

Layers. I usually end up packing for more clothes for a UK holiday than for anywhere else.

A top is anything you wear on your top half. So a warm top = a jumper.

Where I live 20 is definitely not a summer temp. OP is used to hot weather so I doubt they would wear shorts in 20 degrees - I certainly wouldn't.
