What the hell to wear in England?

Live abroad, very hot, still in shorts and flip flops.
Visiting England in a week. Dm tells me we can all wear shorts as still warm, but pack jumpers and hooded raincoats too

I'm so confused

Sorry some people are being so rude and unhelpful - luckily we’re not all like that! It’s quite interchangeable and even the weather apps only give a rough estimate. I’ve been outside all weekend - yesterday I was in shorts, tshirt and suncream all over. This morning was shorts and tshirt and this afternoon I changed in to trousers and added a jumper. Thin layers will be helpful so you’ve got options. Have fun!

Thank you! So kind

She’s wrong.

I’ve been wearing shorts and T-shirts all week

It is a confusing time weather wise.
It has been mid twenties in the SE and very humid, but chilly morning and evening. Cooler if you’re sitting still inside. So whatever you wear you end up really sweaty or really cold at some point of the day. Or multiple iterations of both.

I’m fed up of it now. I don’t really want to wear summery clothes any more.

I'm in the NE and was wearing a lovely warm waterproof coat while I watched DS play football today. Perfect with the sideways wind and rain.

Lifeislikeaboxofchocolate · 27/09/2026 22:07

Warm-Ish. Shorts in the daytime maybe….. I’d go more for lightweight trousers. Will definitely need a cardigan and light jacket some of the time and yes a raincoat or umbrella. The weather is transitioning so no straight answer. Was really hot one day last week now it’s just mild.

Sunbringer · 27/09/2026 22:15

It’s not that warm. I’m wearing jeans mostly with any top you like and a thin jacket. If you’re used to hot weather then you might want a warmer cardigan or jumper too.

Think classic Cold country late summer into autumn clothing not scarves yet and sometimes I take the jacket off. Today I wore a thin long sleeved top and jeans and it was perfect.

We are an island with very mercurial weather. It can be 25C and clear at midday and rainy and 10C at 4pm.

Cornwall

I am in Devon so not far from where you are going and I am still wearing shorts with long-sleeved jumper. Although, if you are planning to do a lot of walking, I'd recommend a t-shirt.
Basically, in England you dress in layers and you can pop them on and off as necessary. We are just as confused as you, I promise.
But yes, it's warm but also it changes depending on whether it's a sunny day and it is cooler in the mornings and evenings.

NotAnotherScarf · 27/09/2026 22:21

Watch the film pressure. It explains repeatedly that British weather can start sunny, snow, rain then bake you. That's in an hour! So your mum is right pack for the worst

Denim4ever · 27/09/2026 22:23

It's not gone autumnal here yet. Light jacket or blazer with scarf after 10pm. No socks, no tweed, no coats

Octavia64 · 27/09/2026 22:26

It’s always a good idea to have a waterproof coat in England.

at the moment it’s cooler in the mornings but still shorts/dresses weather in the afternoons.

i’m layering in evenings and mornings but taking layers off in the middle of the day. Sea is still pretty warm and I’m sitting on the beach after my swim in just my swimsuit.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 27/09/2026 22:28

You can't win with Cornwall. I went in early April and packed for the cold and wet that was forecast but ended up having to buy a new summer wardrobe while there. Have also been in summer and had to go shopping to buy warmer stuff ( we were camping and the weather turned overnight)

It has been very warm in the South East this week and definitely shorts weather.

She’s wrong.

I’m still wearing t-shirts and shorts in the NW. I’m not used to living in Spain though…

Thecatspantaloons · 27/09/2026 22:31

I'm confused too, by the unnecessary snarky comments .
It's that weird limbo time of year where it's not necessarily cold, but it'll feel cold if you get wet - so light things but definitely a waterproof/jacket/sweater combo.
I've also put away my sandals and flip flops for the year.

Laurmolonlabe · 27/09/2026 22:33

Light layers and a raincoat/umbrella. The weather can be quite warm but wet, if you get wet you'll get cold, layers, shoes which keep your feet dry and a light raincoat. This is good advice 80% of the year in England , the weather can and does change quite quickly.I wouldn't advise shorts in autumn.

OriginalPeanut · 27/09/2026 22:33

If you live abroad and are used to the heat, I doubt it will be shorts weather for you even though it's probably still mild for the time of year.

Aussiesgettingsmashed · 27/09/2026 22:35

A nice sturdy but comfortable shoe is vital. A trouser with pockets is very useful for storage. Tissues, breath mints, whistle. Shawls are popular at the moment and also a beret.

CrikeyMajikey · 27/09/2026 22:36

I live in the SE, I wore shorts and a long sleeve T for a couple of hours today to walk the dog. I wasn’t cold at the time but I felt cold for a few hours afterwards. So light trousers and layers, plus a waterproof.

TallagallaPenguin · 27/09/2026 22:36

This week I’ve been in warm jumper and jeans, loose cotton trousers and short sleeved top, and a lightweight summer maxi dress. It’s really variable at the moment! Jeans and a variety of tops is probably fine but I’d pack something a bit more suitable for warm weather on your bottom half if you have something suitable - maybe not full on shorts but intermediate looser trousers?

If it’s 18/20 degrees and lovely and sunny, but cooler in the evening - whatever you’d wear then. You may be more acclimatised to hotter weather than us!

Onlythisnamewasavailable · 27/09/2026 22:36

I am in Cornwall. It's wet sometimes, but when the sun is out most of us are in short and t shirts still. I have been off this week and been in short shorts most of the time. Loads of people swimming in the sea this weekend.

You will probably want a hoody on in the evening, and your legs get cold once the sun has set.

It will also depend if you are going to be sitting around or hiking. It's fine to hike in shorts and t shirts (other clothes will be too hot), but you might want longer sleeves if just sitting around outside a lot or o
In the shade.

Bring waterproofs

RaininSummer · 27/09/2026 22:36

It's Britain...you need to pack for most weather eventualities. So suntop and jumper, sunglasses and raincoat, sandals and wellies etc.

oviraptor21 · 27/09/2026 22:37

I was sunbathing in a bikini on the beach last week. South coast. Definitely come prepared for anything!

CheeseWisely · 27/09/2026 22:39

I wish I could tell you. We’re about as south as it gets and I keep dressing myself and DS at 7am for the 13/14 degrees it is when we leave the house and then sweating by noon in 23/24 degrees. I wish we could just have Autumn proper now.

Namemechangey · 27/09/2026 22:41

I have friends come from sunnier climbs quite a bit, they always ask this.
basically pack for all eventualities as we have every season in one day sometimes.
you can go out and see people in literally full winter clothes and next to them someone in shorts and flip flops, it depends how you feel the cold and what time of day you head out.

AMarkAMissionABrandAScar · 27/09/2026 22:41

We're still waiting for autumn in the SW. So basically it's chilly in the mornings and then disgustingly sweaty with low sun in your eyes until that sets. I'm still wearing cropped jeans and trainers with t shirts and shoving an umbrella and cardigan in my bag.

I won't wear shorts in nearly-October. They've gone in the loft.

Notthisagainyouidiot · 27/09/2026 22:42

Layers. It's that time of year where I have suntan lotion, sunglasses and an umbrella. And the wrong coat on.
