Neighbour’s car ruining neighbourhood

Would love to know what you all think of this. We live in a lovely little street, we all take pride in our homes. There is no off-street parking unfortunately. Recently an older man (early sixties?)left his car next to an embankment which faces our homes. The problem is, his car had broken down on a busy street and had to be towed somewhere. This was about three weeks ago. The man has been trying to fix it himself and has sometimes had the front grille off and even jacks under the front of the car (all wheels are on). A few of us have challenged him about it. One neighbour has explained that it looks unsightly and none of us here fix our cars in the street. His car is noticeably older than most in our street. His answer has been that there was no space for it to be left in his own road around the corner when the recovery vehicle rescued him. Three of us have challenged him. We asked him if he was even from our neighbourhood, as it’s just not done here! The latest time he got quite angry and said he was doing his best and was waiting for a part to arrive. We all feel he should get a garage to tow it away and fix it there. We have checked online and his vehicle is taxed, insured, and has a MOT. The repair he is attempting involves his getting under the car, but no noise involved, which is something I suppose! A few of us want to call the police about him. Three people have told him already that it’s unsightly with the grille removed, so he’s already been warned!

What exactly do you think the police are doing to do?

Bookwormmumuk · 27/09/2026 18:03

The wee guy sounds like he's doing his best. I'd be frustrated if I were him and everyone was having a go and questioning if I lived there. Maybe he cant afford a garage ? Give the guy some grace and crack on with your own life.

Bilsonate · 27/09/2026 18:03

Is this a joke? Leave the man and his car be!

Lizzieregina · 27/09/2026 18:05

Have you ever considered that he can’t afford to get it towed away and fixed in a garage?

It sounds like he’s is trying to deal with it, so give him some grace while he does so.

BronzedSun · 27/09/2026 18:05

Have you been able to identify a law / rule / bye law that he’s broken?

ForGreenHiker · 27/09/2026 18:05

I see that rage baiting is now on Mumsnet!

If it’s legally entitled to be on the road, which it is, there’s nothing you can do. Such a shame it’s spoiling your naice neighbourhood but why not try cutting the poor bloke some slack??? You all sound thoroughly unpleasant people.

Lifesyoungdream · 27/09/2026 18:08

As it’s only been three weeks and he has said he is waiting for a part I would just leave him alone or maybe ask him if he needs any help.

Pollqueen · 27/09/2026 18:08

The poor bloke is trying his best. I'm sure he's very sorry he's bringing down the neighborhood but leave him be. You sound insufferable

Probably friends with the author of last night's 'my 15 year old daughters boyfriend has convinced her to become a Muslim' thread.

maudelovesharold · 27/09/2026 18:08

😁

ExcitableCat · 27/09/2026 18:09

Poor guy. Let him fix his bloody car. He can leave his car anywhere on a public road whilst its taxed, motd and insured. He’s probably in dire straits financially hence not taking it to a garage. Have some compassion here

Uricon2 · 27/09/2026 18:10

Nice try Hyacinth.

Littlejellyuk · 27/09/2026 18:10

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 27/09/2026 18:10

Had to laugh he has been warned 😁🤯🤯

Floatlikeafeather2 · 27/09/2026 18:11

Hyacinth? Is that you, dear?

ThisSunnyBea · 27/09/2026 18:11

lol

Cushionseams · 27/09/2026 18:12

His car is noticeably older than most in our street
How dreadful! You should call the police for that if nothing else.

Nice try Hyacinth.

Sorry @Uricon2. Cross posted.

Arlanymor · 27/09/2026 18:15

If this had happened in our street, one of us would have been out with a cup of tea and biscuits, and asking if he needed a hand at all. I guess there is more than one type of neighbour...

Itsdarkateight · 27/09/2026 18:15

It’s it preventing access for anyone? I think you all need to chill out, it’s not like he can move it is it!!

Haha he’s been warned, you sound like you think you’re a gangster or something 😂
