Neighbour’s car ruining neighbourhood

Would love to know what you all think of this. We live in a lovely little street, we all take pride in our homes. There is no off-street parking unfortunately. Recently an older man (early sixties?)left his car next to an embankment which faces our homes. The problem is, his car had broken down on a busy street and had to be towed somewhere. This was about three weeks ago. The man has been trying to fix it himself and has sometimes had the front grille off and even jacks under the front of the car (all wheels are on). A few of us have challenged him about it. One neighbour has explained that it looks unsightly and none of us here fix our cars in the street. His car is noticeably older than most in our street. His answer has been that there was no space for it to be left in his own road around the corner when the recovery vehicle rescued him. Three of us have challenged him. We asked him if he was even from our neighbourhood, as it’s just not done here! The latest time he got quite angry and said he was doing his best and was waiting for a part to arrive. We all feel he should get a garage to tow it away and fix it there. We have checked online and his vehicle is taxed, insured, and has a MOT. The repair he is attempting involves his getting under the car, but no noise involved, which is something I suppose! A few of us want to call the police about him. Three people have told him already that it’s unsightly with the grille removed, so he’s already been warned!

What is it you think the police will do?

wishfulthinking25 · 27/09/2026 19:58

I wish this was all I had to worry about in life. Are you serious? “It’s unsightly” “older than most in our street” if you lived in such a nice area you’d all have private driveways! So please, get off your high horse and have a rest & I can assure you the police will do absolutely nothing because he isn’t committing any crime.

RogueFemale · 27/09/2026 20:03

You are being unreasonable. And weird.

rivalsbinge · 27/09/2026 20:07

Why don’t you all chip in and try and help the guy?

Couldyounot · 27/09/2026 20:08

A motor vehicle? Under repair? In the street?? Goodness, how horrid!

Newstartplease24 · 27/09/2026 20:10

I thought this post was going to be something about modified exhaust, which can ruin a neighbour hood.

the problem is, idiots like this poster discredit all legitimate objections to antisocial behaviour and weaken the social contract.

KookyFish · 27/09/2026 20:11

Have you not got anything better to do than make up false posts? Maybe try knitting or drawing....

Nodirectionhome · 27/09/2026 20:11

😁 This thread is amusing to me. In January this year a smashed up car with 4 flat tyres and wooden fencing embedded in the front grille was left in our tiny cul-de-sac. It had valid road tax until June, so was allowed to be there. In June it was SORNED but remained on the road. It was eventually removed two weeks ago, despite having tickets from the council on it since August saying it was breaking the terms of the SORN.

Lis947 · 27/09/2026 20:12

I think you should leave the poor man alone, however it is unlawful to leave a car jacked up on the side of the road for long periods of time because it can be dangerous. But as long as it's safe, it's not forever so give the guy a break!

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/09/2026 20:15

What a bunch of horrible snobs you are! I am so glad I dont live anywhere near you!

As for "challenging" him....for what?! He has broken no laws. You dont like it? Tough.

Sassylovesbooks · 27/09/2026 20:16

The vehicle is taxed and has an MOT, so therefore is legally road worthy. Unfortunately, the car 'being an eyesore' isn't illegal and the police won't want to know. In fact I can guarantee that your local council won't want to know either. Yes, it looks unsightly, but it's not going to be parked there indefinitely. It's while the man waits for a part, and can fix it.

Given the cars age, perhaps he can't afford to buy a newer car (after all used car prices have skyrocketed) and he can't afford for the car to be repaired by a garage. I'm assuming he has the know-how in order to repair his own vehicle and isn't relying on YouTube tutorials!! In an ideal world I'm sure he'd rather have a garage fix his vehicle but it's probably money that's stopping him, from doing so.

namechangeformeeee · 27/09/2026 20:17

gosh what a horrible bunch of people you all sound like

YetAnotherAlias62 · 27/09/2026 20:17

"We asked him if he was even from our neighbourhood, as it’s just not done here!"

That's all I needed to read.
YABVVVVVU
The car is parked legally, butt out.

You sound like a snob.

PinkArt · 27/09/2026 20:21

Eeeew, he sounds a bit common OP, and you might all catch common from him. It starts with a car but before you know it you'll be wearing a tracksuit and dropping your Ts. Maybe get some flaming torches from John Lewis and run him out of the neighbourhood?

Branster · 27/09/2026 20:23

Ah a snobby little road. But not expensive enough to be a private road with security at the gates and fully enclosed away from commoners.
You need to move to our exclusive private estate, we never ever have this problem. As an added bonus everyone has brand new cars. A few eccentrics have expensive old cars that are considered rare classics. Nobody minds. Nobody sees any parked cars. Ever. All hidden away for security and privacy. All you see are moving cars to the gates. Obviously trades and deliveries are in out all the time but we put up with the moving vans and lorries. C’est la vie!

comealongdobbeh · 27/09/2026 20:24

Good lord the entitlement….!!!!!!

I mean yes, I would find this annoying. But I wouldn’t be giving the guy any warnings (I assume you don’t own the street??) and I certainly would not be wasting police time!

kinda hope he leaves a big disgusting oil patch behind when he finally fixes it

That is NOT funny. I walked past a Poor at a bus stop in 1989 and my life has never been the same since.

Error404FucksNotFound · 27/09/2026 20:26

I was walking my poodles, you understand. Not intending to take the omnibus myself.

Sunbringer · 27/09/2026 20:28

It’s a public road and it won’t be there indefinitely. I’d just ignore it and leave him be. Maybe he can’t afford a mechanic and is having a really tough time and just trying to fix his car and you’re all getting very Hyacinth Bucket about it.

Yupstillhere · 27/09/2026 20:34

Lolza. Why are people responding to this, it's satire.

I thought the first rule of satire was that it was supposed to be funny?

Sheridan, is that you?

Sounds like Margot from "The Good Life".

Or Hyacinth Bucket.

nolongeranutjob · 27/09/2026 20:50

My Mum was reported to the council for having her own taxed, insured, mot'd campervan parked on her own driveway. Another resident said it lowered the tone.

Sometimes these people are actually real!
