AIBU to tell my daughter to report a flatmate's mother?

Dd went to university a couple of weeks ago. She is setting in well and likes her flatmates.
Unfortunately there seems to be a problem with one of them. She is an international student and her mum came over to help settle her in, all fine.
BUT
The mum is still there, sleeping in the same room as the daughter.
The rest of them are getting increasingly annoyed as she's just there and as she doesn't speak any English it's difficult to ask what her plans are.
When dd moved in her contract said that she wasn't allowed any overnight guests to stay more than 2 consecutive nights.
Its been 2 weeks!
I've told them to go to student housing/ welfare and say something. Maybe they can do something?
Surely at the very least it's a safety issue if there was a fire or something as this woman isn't supposed to be there?
The rest of them dont want to get this girl and her mum into trouble but if the mums visa runs out surely that's worse?
I know I can't do anything but how do I get through to dd?

Has anyone even thought the woman MIGHT not actually be the girls mother?

They only have her word for it, from what I have read. Really, none of them actually know where, or who either, of these women are or what the hell is going on. It could be completely innocent but it could also be something really sinister.

This needs reporting now to the uni to deal with. If it was my daughter, I'd be ringing the university myself and say a random stranger is living with my daughter! . And i'm no 'helicopter mum' but this whole situation at best is inappropriate, but at worst..... just imagine what the hell could be happening here?!

My daughter had to provide evidence of enrollment at her university, and that was even for a dorm which was technically privately run. The woman needs to leave but I doubt the daughter is not a real student.

TheBlueRobin · 28/09/2026 14:26

I used to work for a University and there would always be a mother who turned up at the careers fairs, speaking to employer etc. A bit weird but no harm. It then got strange as she turned up to every event, even the subject specific ones and would linger at the end to see if there were any freebies or free food (we usually fed the employers a light buffet). It turned out she was staying in her daughter's room and even waiting for her outside lecture theatres. I don't know the specific nationality but it was Eastern European.

I am surprised. I did my undergrad and my masters (the latter only three years ago) alongside international students, all of whom had some, even limited, English. Talk about a shit situation for everyone involved.

It is indeed. Russell’s absorb the vast majority of international students too, especially from China so it’s even more shocking I suppose. They’re all just desperate for the cash right now so take anyone. One colleague in politics told me he teaches a seminar with 3 MA students who couldn’t even answer “what is your name”.

Don't be ridiculous. She arrived in the UK two weeks ago. Absurd

How the hell did the conversation evolve into arguing wether she is an illegal immigrant or not?

This is a simple situation, she should not be staying there simple so @Boxingshibes your daughters needs to notify the accomodation authorities.

"I will be making a scene with housing/welfare"

Also why will you be making a scene with housing when the girls gave refused to notify them if the issue???

Credittocress · 28/09/2026 14:54

Fuck sake. I’d be calling the accommodation manager now and she can be out and in a hotel by teatime. The girl doesn’t need to know it was you, but if she does- who cares?

You daughters mum calling the housing manager doesn’t come close to moving into accommodation, shouting at housemates and turning off their cooking.

So how did your colleague teach them, and how did they pass the course? Ive know students who struggle to speak good English but even then they could read/write it and understand spoken English.

My ds shared a stair w 4 Chinese students in his first year and their English was very good indeed.

They run translator apps during the seminar which they presumably play back afterwards. They can’t engage during the seminar whatsoever. With essays he suspects AI. Our uni’s AI policy is basically use it if you want but declare it.

Will edit to say students from other countries (India in particular) have fantastic fluent English but he’s found the Chinese students struggle and have limited English.

Chinese. Asylum seeker. Coming to the UK for all the freebies etc

Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers · 28/09/2026 14:58

My dd is at University of Glasgow with a big Chinese student population. A girl was checking into the private halls two weeks ago and couldn’t even say hi my name is x I’m checking in. She just held out her phone with a translator app on (which struggled as the lad on desk had a strong Glaswegian accent)
I remarked to dd and she just shrugged and said they don’t speak English. They do STEM subjects and use tech. Her friend was in private halls yr1 and everyone else in flat spoke own language and excluded her. Presumably tutors are told not to ask them questions in seminars, don’t piss off the customers paying nearly £30,000 a year. All communications in her private halls are in English and Chinese. There’s also the Chinese version of just eat at restaurants around the uni.

This happened to a friend of mine who did an MA in the last five years. Students transparently paying for someone to write their papers.

How do you know that? You literally do not know that and as I said this is a simple situation, she should not be staying there irrespective of her immigration status so the girls need to report it to housing simple instead of making up assumptions and then excuses not to report it while stewing with resentment.

I was saying what some other people were suggesting on this thread.

FFS

TheGander · 28/09/2026 15:45

Why FFS? Same thing happened to a colleague. A flatmates’s mum embedded herself in their home and was trying to get on a waiting list for an operation.

MaturingCheeseball · 28/09/2026 15:48

It would be the same if someone moved their boyfriend in. One room = one person!

The very cheek of turning off the oven and complaining about noise. If the woman were making herself useful (cleaning/cooking for all) then maybe it might make a funny story, but as it is she is a cf and should leave immediately. If she wants to support her dd then she books into an airb&b nearby.

@Nev.

I'll just add this here. Years before I knew him, DH travelled to the Soviet Union to watch the Olympics. He was in Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev and Minsk. He was only there as a tourist, and spoke no Russian.

He told me that one time he was walking through Red Square wearing his kilt. A large older Russian gentleman came up to him, grinned, gave him a bear hug, picked him up, put him down and said something then walked away after another grin.

DH was convinced that it was someone who had met Scots during the war.

Anyway, he had very fond memories of his holiday in Russia: "People are people."

His one regret was that we never managed to go back there on holiday together: we had plans for my 60th birthday but illness and lockdown scuppered that.

I am surprised to hear of so many British travellers and students in the 1980s in your posts. I could not imagine that Brits would think Russia would be a desirable place to travel, especially during such times.

It is nice to hear that yourself and husband have pleasant experiences of Russia, and Russian people. Because I believe many Brits have a perception of us, due to our differences in demeanour and social norms (The movies also like to push a narrative, why is every Russian man character a gangster? 😂) For example, I am aware Russians are known for not being friendly or smiling. A misconception I believe comes from a famous Russian saying. It translates to = “Smiling without reason is a sign of a fool” Excessive smiling is a sign of stupidity, and seems insincere. In normal interactions, a non expressive face is deemed more trustworthy. But of course, we do smile. I smile reading your story. But we don’t strain our face for politeness. So, when your husband in the kilt met the other man you can be sure his joy was genuine 🙂

I’m sorry to hear you did not make the return. Maybe one day when times have changed you will have the opportunity

these so called universities pack the so called courses with foreign students who get RITISH government loans to pay the course fees, straight i to the Swiss bank k account, a d further loans for subsistence, NOT A PENNY IF WHICH will ever be repaid.

How would foreign students get British student loans? What absolute bollocks.

That is a ridiculous accusation, very untrue that international students get loans from the UK government. Stop trying to spread untruths.

There was a high number of Chinese international students when I went to University. More so Arabic, but still many Chinese.

I was aware beforehand that Chinese people are known for being very modest and reserved people. However I have also had what would be considered rude interactions. They never acknowledged me also, and stayed within their own community. During the times I attempted any interaction they struggled to maintain eye contact with me, they appeared not just reserved, but shy and lacking confidence.

Having said that, I have two British-born Chinese friends who are very outgoing and liberated people.

Ex international student here. With all due respect, your English is worse than mine so I doubt you’ve set foot in a university before. With that in mind- where are you obtaining this information from?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's hilarious.

Meanwhile, back in reality, foreign students (who are not in fact given british loans) paying course fees makes up a vital sum that allows universities to balance the books.

Thats why universities spend so much trying to appeal to overseas students. They want the cash.
