AIBU to feel hurt my husband will not visit my gallery display?

my Art is being displayed for the first time in a gallery which is 2.5hrs drive away. My husband says it’s too far to go and it’s not his thing anyway. AIBU to be upset by his lack of support? If it was the other way round I’d be excited to go and see it. He says it’s my hobby not his.

I’ve just looked at the gallery website. Let me tell you, OP, if I get chance to visit Scarbo’ in the next few months, I’m absolutely seeing your work. Bloody good show!

axolotlfloof · 28/09/2026 18:18

Congratulations OP.
I think you should go for a weekend in Scarborough with or without your husband.
Getting your art on display is very exciting.

Kokonimater · 28/09/2026 18:18

How unkind of him. That really is quite nasty not a very nice personality trait. I think this is a lot about your marriage. You have every right to tell him how deeply disappointed you are in his lack of support and lack of pride in you.

The sadness you are feeling is because your DH is being unloving and unsupportive and it’s normal to feel hurt when our partners act in this way. However, please don’t let it tarnish something you are rightfully proud of - you’ve done brilliantly and deserve a day in the sun. Can you go with a friend or other family member? Scarborough is lovely, so make a day of it: visit your painting, go for lunch and a long walk and bask in your fame.

Whatyoutalkingabouteh · 28/09/2026 18:21

Yes it’s potentially a long drive but this is something to celebrate! Sounds like he’s a little selfish/jealous. Do you have any friends that would come with you? I’d say make a weekend of it with a few friends that do celebrate you and go without him.
congratulations x

dcthatsme · 28/09/2026 18:23

Could you suggest a bit of a day out for it? Idk coastal walk? Or lunch somewhere nice? So it’s not just a five hour drive with a short gallery visit. Seems a shame not to come and see it and cheer you on. Whatever you or he decides this is wonderful. Well done you! Hopefully the start of many exhibitions.

Iz20 · 28/09/2026 18:23

That’s horrible I wouldn’t support him in anything he does after this am so sorry .

StMarie4me · 28/09/2026 18:23

My three sons would move heaven and earth to get there, as would their wives for them.
You need to tell him how hurtful this is. He needs to do better.

seanconneryseyebrow · 28/09/2026 18:24

I just dont get people like this. When your loved one is all excited and proud, its just the loveliest feeling watching them bask in the glow of their achievements. Its a gift just to watch them I think. Miserable sod. Does he even love you? Doesn't say love to me.

Even if I dont care about my DPs hobbies, I still get such a thrill from seeing him all proud - like a little boy. He's the same with me. Sharing that with him is just a delight. Has he always been this miserable OP?

Tbh my ex-DH was like this. One of the reasons he's an ex. Joyless fucker.

I wouldn't do this. He will bring you down, and he doesnt deserve to share in it with you. Make sure you go though. Ideally with someone who will cheerlead you, but if you can't then go alone. And tell your DH he isn't invited because he is a royal shit.

HunterBidensTanktop · 28/09/2026 18:26

My friend is a musician. His wife doesn't like his music and never attended any milestone events. He's ok with that. She's still very supportive in other ways. I think it all depends on context. In this case your husband mightn't see what the big deal is seeing a picture that he has already seen. He should still go because it's important to you.

Shloopie · 28/09/2026 18:28

Absolutely miserable.

If my husband was hyped about an achievement I would also be hyped. Even if it involved something I had less than zero interest in. I think that's normal behaviour.

Triskellion75 · 28/09/2026 18:28

Sorry, but I think that's pretty appalling of him. Congratulations on your achievement though, that's amazing!

Rhubarb24 · 28/09/2026 18:31

For me, it's not just that he has refused to go, he has refused to go knowing how much it means to you. Some women won't be bothered but there are loads of women on here who tolerate all sorts of stuff and breadcrumbs.

Well done though. I'm hoping that he is winding you up and planning a surprise trip to see it x

Yes it is, it was chosen as one of only 20 out of almost 300 entries from artists across the UK (the other 20 were larger newsprints), judged by award winning artists. This is still a big achievement in my eyes and it’s up in a gallery for all to see. Sorry if this doesn’t sound significant enough to you. My work has still been selected to be displayed in a gallery, that’s my point.

That's a fantastic achievement @NewAquaHare ! Well done and congratulations!

Your DH is an unsupportive arse, mine would be first to sort the travel arrangements.

Don't let him or certain people on this thread piss on your achievement. Go and enjoy looking at it without misery guts 😃

Congratulations, that's fantastic 🎉 I'd hope my loved ones would show more support than this and be disappointed if they didn't but you can't change him I guess. I'd try and arrange with other family or friends to go and make a day of it to share in your achievement.

It is very hard to see that anything other than a lack of love.

I went to DH's martial arts tournaments even though I hate watching him being hit (it's rare - he's good!). I just close my eyes for that bit. Because I love him and it's a huge achievement.

Yours is a bit of a shit. Pattern?

This

I would happily drive across the country to see my partner exhibiting her work/playing her sport/playing her musical instrument. I wouldn't even think about it as 'supporting' her; I would be so proud and would enjoy watching/listening and meeting her chums. Isn't that what love is? Especially when this is a first exhibition for the OP

I can see why OP is sad

Duchoftheterrace · 28/09/2026 18:34

He's a miserable, nasty bugger isn't he?
My partner treated us to a night away so that we could visit an exhibition with just one of my paintings on display. Your bloke should be your cheerleader, not the one who crushes your dreams.

Go without him, take someone nice with you. Have a night away!

I'd be really upset if I were you OP. I couldn't imagine DH not wanting to go and see in those circumstances.

Congratulations OP.

Canttalkinreallife · 28/09/2026 18:39

Am I in cuckoo land?

Spouse had a great achievement and to just refuse to go?!

What a dick!

You sound lovely OP, can you go with a friend or family member?

If my husband wasn’t first in the queue to celebrate me then what’s the bloody point of being married?

Blarney72 · 28/09/2026 18:40

Do you have a website/sell your work? Put your website up here to promote yourself, increase your sales and turn your sadness into a success. I'm sure a friend would go with you to celebrate your achievement:)

RedGlassHeart · 28/09/2026 18:42

My husband would be proud of me and would want to go to support me (and has done exactly that in the past!)

Realworld10 · 28/09/2026 18:43

Wow, that's amazing, well done! I'm excited for you so your DH should feel the same and much more.

Times I have done things (no where near as accomplished as you) like take part in my sport competitions and the odd play, he always came, along with some of my own family.

Sorry you're not getting the credit you deserve from him, let him know our responses! Xx
