AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

Karen was a poor choice of name but there’s no mocking here. And OP is not ungrateful. She offered to pay her way. Dsis refused and is now making life miserable for the sake of pennies. It’s insane to cost showers to the penny and bang on the door if OP exceeds a stingy timer. Or to turn off the hot water on a combi boiler so it can’t be used without your knowledge. That’s controlling and there’s clearly a MH issue.

There is an 'offer' and there is a genuine 'here, I have transferred a couple of hundred quid into your account'. Lots of people 'offer', very few mean it.

No, I'm not buying that.
In polite and less close relationships, and/or for smaller favours, perhaps (like if someone pays for your coffee and you say, 'Let me get you back' and you both sort of know it's not a real offer and they wave it away). But this is two sisters and staying with her/using her utilities for several weeks. It sounds like the sister knew she wanted to be careful with money/water, so the OP offering at the start (and she offered a specific sum; its wasn't a a vague suggestion) would have been an obvious point for her to accept.

Would a cheap chain hotel not be easier if a little more expensive?

I would blow up at the shower monitoring I would’ve been kicked out by now

but you could say “look sis this staying together isn’t working I don’t want to fall out over minutes in a shower and pennies on the gas so I think it best I move to a hotel for the rest of the time thanks for everything though been a total lifesaver”

Well, the OP didn't, and I'd expect the sister, as a grown adult, to accept an offer if she wants/needs it.

This was what l was going to say. We have a combi boiler and hot water is on demand every time you turn on the hot tap or the shower. Sounds more like she’s turned the boiler off altogether. Which is batshit.

It's a minor point, but some combi-boilers do still have timers for hot water, mine does. Some boilers keep a reservoir of hot water so that the water turns hot faster, and some keep the heat exchanger hot at all times rather than just firing up on demand, so with the timer off the water is never hot but it saves on the gas doing that.

I dont know if you heard but there is N Ireland, Scotland and Wales as part of the UK and two of those have £100 notes. Lots of people live in those countries.....who knew?!

Edited

Wow! I'm sorry to say, I didn't know that, but I do now. The Bank of Scotland one looks quite cool.

I’d just give her say £50 and let her amuse herself by totting up daily shower costs. She does sound either bonkers or excessively tight, though - or both….

We once stayed at an air bnb in Cornwall where there was a 4 minute timer on the shower! Apparently there was a genuine reason for it - or so they said….

I managed, just, but it would never have been enough when I had long, thick hair to rinse off.

That's the thing - I have thick, curly hair. Shampooing isn't a thirty second affair. I'm not standing in the shower with a hair mask on for ten minutes but I do need more than a few minutes to get everything washed and rinsed!

Thank you.

I'm very open and explicit with DS, due to some of our miscommunication in the past. She waves these things off but then obsesses about then and becomes passive aggressive or just straight up aggressive. I am exhausted!

It's not about the money really. It's about controlling her home environment or controlling OP or both.

What would happen if you told her you are not happy about having your showers timed and asked how much money she would want or what she would want you to do to have unmonitored showers?

ScholesPanda · Yesterday 16:31

I'm tempted to say as others have that you should give her £50 or £100 or whatever really and then leave her to it.

I also considered paying her the exact amount as a cheque or a postal order, to spite her.

But this is about control. Controlling how long you're in the shower, how much water you use, controlling your emotions. She turned down the money so she can be doing you a favour and she expects your gratitude to be paid in ceded control. She'll also enjoy having this to hold over you as that big favour she did for you.

I'd leave a few hundred quid when you go as a thank you gift and then go lower contact with her. Next time you have work done factor in the cost of a short term let or B&B to stay in.

Why are you putting up with this?! Move to an Airbnb or hotel and wallow in the bath!!!

Nearly50omg · Yesterday 16:57

In Australia we mange with 3 minute showers so it’s easily done! And yes you should be giving her £ towards her bills anyway and of course when shaving etc turning the water off if you’re not actually using it!

OP has offered to pay towards the bills and food and her Dsis refused. So it’s batshit that she’s now behaving like this over pennies when OP has offered a significant contribution. And no, I don’t turn off the water when shaving or lathering up - I don’t appreciate a blast of cold water when the shower powers up again !!

In someway, she’s right it does cost money

So if she is charging you up to 20p a day for a shower, I really don’t see the hassle in it

you could spend £100 a day to spend a night in a hotel

The OP knows it costs money; that's why she offered money at the outset. The sister refused £100 a week and all her food covered, and is cavilling about 20p here and there instead.

OP has offered to pay £100 a week and buy food. Why would Dsis refuse that and then nitpick about pennies though ?

OrchardOwl · Yesterday 18:00

She’s behaving like an oddball for sure. I agree with previous posters, throw some money at her and tell her to stop going on about the water as it’s annoying, so please just take what she needs for the bills from there.

OptionB, avoid using showers there by showering at work / the gym / wherever else you can get a shower.

OptionC, use dry shampoo so you don’t have to wash hair as frequently.

You shouldn’t have to use options B or C, as you should be able to use her shower as needed, but if telling her to stop her behaviour is too much confrontation, then they’re there as alternatives.

busymomtoone · Yesterday 18:02

I’m guessing there’s more to it than this - maybe she doesn’t want to hear the shower running at 6.15 am; perhaps she’s worried you’ll stay indefinitely; perhaps she genuinely needs to count the pennies - or she wants to be able to use the bathroom without queuing ? You are in her house , and it sounds like you aren’t currently offering to contribute- talk like adults about what the deal breakers are and what she would like you to contribute?
