To be disappointed Dolly Parton supported biological men using women's toilets?

I really liked her music and she seemed like a nice person: her Imagination Library came to my borough recently. I was very sad to hear she'd died.
But was very disappointed to read this. The statements she made about trans people deserving respect, no issue with those.
But minimising the reasonable concerns women have about being forced to let men in their toilets was wrong.
I'm not saying she should have spoken out for GC issues. It might have been best just not to comment.
Parton had connections with drag queens and I wonder if that's the lens she saw transwomen through : not an excuse but might partially explain.

Can you answer the question,

Why should women tolerate men in their spaces who can't respect the reason those spaces exist in the first places?

I don't think they should tolerate that, no.

Where have I said otherwise?

See, you're imputing me with views that I haven't expressed, and don't hold.

You're not looking for a debate. Again, you're looking for a punchbag.

So why do you feel attacked when I asked that question?

WouldYouLikeAnyToast · 21/09/2026 09:45

YABU.
I agree with the poster upthread saying about "cognitive dissonance right here."
(In response to Dolly promoted love and inclusion, but in this instance I think she's wrong.)
As for those trying to start a debate on "but what is a woman?!" there's a whole board where they LOVE stuff like that and can "debate" themselves into circles all day, every day. Posters on here are best off ignored who are trying to do the same on this thread.

I’m not disappointed at all. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, ascribing me with a view that I haven't actually expressed, and one which I know you very strongly disagree with, and then asking me the same question over and over, just for a start.

DisappearingGirl · 21/09/2026 09:46

I think you have to consider the time and place in which Dolly grew up and spent most of her adult life. She came from conservative small-town America where it was not acceptable to be gay or non-conforming, let alone trans. She was a queer icon and any trans people she knew were likely old-school transsexuals or the uber-camp uber-gay-man type of trans.

Similar for Taylor Swift making her You Need to Calm Down video with a lot of gender non-conforming people - she also started off in a very conservative community, and a lot of America is still very polarised and would not accept someone being gay, trans or otherwise non-conforming. I don't know what her view is on males in women's spaces, but I can see why she wanted to support the LGBT community in general.

I actually have a similar (but different) situation where I know a group of people (in the UK) who are very into trans rights - they're all in a particular music scene that attracts a lot of geeky, non-conforming people, some possibly autistic - the trans and non-binary people in that group are the type who wouldn't hurt a fly and would genuinely be at risk of harrassment from meat-head types.

So while I don't personally agree with males in women's spaces, I can see why some people have a different view based on their differing experiences and I don't hate them for it.

As an observer I'd regard your answers to be the only showing aggression.

It's coming across that you've raised points you're unable to back with any substance and are now shouting about hate. Much like a TRA method.

And here we go…

This is why I am asking.

You have labelled me as aggressive i.e. a puncher

I am asking why?

I absolutely do and I'm extremely gender critical. But this hobby horse is shoehorned into literally every conversation about more or less everything under the sun.

What does the King think about biological men entering women's toilets?
What is the impact of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz into biological men entering women's toilets?
What impact does AI have on biological men entering women's toilets?

It's a classic example of a fairly marginal issue being maniacally over-applied to every subject under the sun. I'll say it and no doubt will get torn a new one but there are bigger issues in feminism, in women's rights, and in the world and I'm tired of having to rehash this tired old canard again and again and again.

I just want to say how much I love this post.

I too am broadly GC*, but I cringe when the one-issue posters arrive on the main branches to derail threads.

*I only say broadly, because I have a really lovely colleague who is trans and I have no issues at all with calling her 'her' etc, because that's how I see her. The trans issue isn't black and white in real life.

She either didn’t want to be cancelled or didn’t understand why as a lot of rich and privileged people don’t see why single sex spaces need to exist. They have never been in a position to use them. Like refuges and prisons

She didn't want to be cancelled or just didn't understand.

Sorry, but listen to yourself.
Extremely patronising for starters, to say she just didn't understand as it's "not your opinion"
You're entitled to your opinion. Your opinion is not the only one though and everyone else is wrong if they think otherwise! There's a word for people who think that's the case.

Just blank them. As they like to say on the other board - "grey rock."

I've asked you to leave me alone twice.

This is the third time.

You are right now showing aggression against someone who has asked you to leave them alone.

This isn't my house but it is a public space.

Please, please stop it.

LancashireButterPie · 21/09/2026 09:55

The sooner we move to just unisex toilets the better. I really don't care where I have a wee just so long as it's clean.
At my last place of work (medical centre) there were no men's or women's toilets, just generic toilets, and it worked well.

No one got a glimpse of an unattended penis.

I really appreciate your posts but this is the advice you'd give to a woman who is being harrassed in a public space.

I shouldn't have to deal with harrassment.

Why ate you besmirching her memory?

Everything I have read since her passing indicate she was an amazing, talented, generous person. It is quite unpleasant to see someone try to sully her memory. What an unsavoury post.

Can we just shut this stupid thread down please.
