Completely unreasonable things that really piss you off when you’re driving

It can’t just be me surely! I get so angry when:

  1. I am in a rush or just want to be home after a long day and people just won’t stop needing to turn right
  2. I realise I need to turn around and all of a sudden the world and his uncle are up my arse or trying to leave every junction it would have been good to do a U-ey in.

Is it illegal? I thought there were circumstances where it’s not. My understanding is if someone is outside you and driving slower it’s fine if you just continue in your lane, i.e. don’t then pull out in front of them.

I don’t think it’s illegal if both lanes are in traffic but it’s been a while since I did my driving theory!

Not sure this is unreasonable, but people in big cars who try to bully the drivers of smaller cars. DH and I have a large car and a smaller car that we share and use depending on where we're going/how many passengers/how much luggage etc. I driving at a similar speed and in a similar way whichever car I take. If I am in the small car I can guarantee that several drivers of larger cars will decide they MUST overtake me (despite me driving at the speed limit), the slow down immediately after as pp mentioned, sometimes to below the speed limit. I often drive on country roads and if I am in the small car and driving behind a tractor when it's not safe to overtake, larger cars behind will often beep or drive too close in an attempt to make me overtake. Similarly, if I am in the smaller car on a single track road, it's quite common for drivers of larger cars to come towards me (in the middle of the road) and wait for me to get out of their way. Particularly irritating when they have just driven past a passing space but won't reverse, or are in a 4x4 but refuse to drive on to a grass verge and expect me to, or when we are on a hill and they expect me to reverse upwards. I find that if I am in the larger car, this all of this happens much less regularly. Especially the single track road bullying- if I'm in the bigger car people seem much more inclined to move over so we can both pass or wait in a passing space.

They shouldn’t be doing that obviously it’s very dangerous but I do hate cyclists

i don’t mind so much if it’s a teenager who obviously doesn’t have a driving licence yet, or someone in an old parka and battered trainers in the rain who clearly has no other option than to cycle but anyone with a carbon fibre bike in Lycra can fuck the fuck off and go and cycle on a track away from the road - we get it all the time on the windy road between our town and the next and it’s just extremely dangerous for them to be there and they seem to enjoy holding everyone up.

Why are you more important than me? So important that your journey matters more than mine? Or are you of the view the roads should only be for functional journeys? So I trust you never drive anywhere other than when strictly necessary. So no days out or holidays, after all, you are just delaying people who have elsewhere to be. Oh and best throw away all that skiing gear, swim gear, football boots while you are at it. After all, we all know how we should only ever take part in strenuous and leisure activities in everyday clothes. But please do say how I am ruining your life for trying to be fit and healthy which might use a stretch of busy road to get to somewhere quieter and more pleasant.

Sortingmyself · 10/09/2026 13:07

People who stop in the middle of the lane to turn right, rather than moving to the middle of the road so you can squeeze past on the left.

People who abandon rather than park their cars.

Slow to drive off at traffic lights

People who let too many cars feed into a main road from a side road so you barely get the chance to inch forward when the lights change.

When a bus pulls out into traffic and the driver flashes his hazards rather than stick his thumb out of the window to say thanks.

Drivers who panic at the whiff of a two-tone/blue lights and dither to make a decision about where to pull over

I probably shouldn't be driving should i?!

Roads are for cars. There are plenty of other places you can practice cycling as a hobby without causing a nuisance or presenting a danger to yourself and others.

Your comment about skiing makes no sense and has no bearing on anything.

More a parking one. When you have a parking bay for a number of cars and someone parks at one end but leaves a big gap between their car and the end of the bay, but not big enough for a car to park in. So they are basically taking up two car parking spaces. It makes me irrationally mad.

Im not the world’s best at car parking. But if I park badly, I correct myself and takes 20 seconds . If people are unable to correct their parking, they should not allowed to drive

DrCoconut · 10/09/2026 13:25

After a very near miss last winter, cyclists who go out after dark with no lights and dark clothes. They are invisible until you get close to them. Quite often they are young teenagers too so not much road experience. A horrible accident waiting to happen.

People who flash other motorists to warn them of speed traps. When I’m in charge that will be an offence . You are aiding and abetting a “crime” in my eyes.

It's already an offence

"Undertaking" is illegal. What isn't illegal is merely continuing in the same lane passing cars who are travelling at lower speeds to your right. It's the act of changing lanes before and after the "undertake" that makes it dangerous driving. If you stay in your own lane before and after and continue driving WITH due care and attention as you pass, that's not an illegal move.

Badbadbunny · 10/09/2026 15:05

A big yes to that. Plus the drivers who are approaching the junction to join a main road from the side road who stop diagonally at the give way sign rather than stop parallel to one side or other of their side of the road, meaning they block the exit for cars behind them wishing to turn the other way. Especially annoying when you want to turn left and the road is clear going right to left, but you can't pull out because the moron in front has stopped diagonally whilst waiting to pull out left to right leaving no room for you to squeeze past - had they just straightened up on approach and "hugged" the centre line, there'd have been space!

@Wowwee1234

Personally I think it should be a matter of the majority gets priority. I.e. if there is a single cyclist holding up a dozen cars, then the cars should have priority simply because of the number of people inconvenienced. Likewise traffic light junctions where the lights change to let 2 cars out (the only ones waiting from the side road), but there's a tail back of dozens/hundreds of people on the main road. Likewise pedestrian crossings in similar situations where the lights change every couple of minutes to let one or two people across, but because they change so often, there's a very long tailback/queue meaning far more people being inconvenienced for the convenience of a handful of people. By the same vein, I'd also agree that say a cycling club of 20 cyclists should take priority if there's only 2 or 3 cars behind them being held up. Everything should be a numbers game.

Within the speed limit obvs. So if a car is in the fast lane going 70mph you can't undertake legally

Tractors, horses and pedestrians lose out by that metric

But if the other car is doing 70, you can't "over" take legally either.

Indeed, but is it really fair to delay dozens or hundreds of people so as not to delay a single horse, tractor or pedestrian? There should be a balance. If the car coming up to the end of a traffic queue is going to be stuck for 10 minutes before they get through the pedestrian crossing that changes every 2 minutes, why shouldn't the pedestrian wait for a little longer than 2 minutes. Why is the pedestrian's time more valuable than the dozens/hundreds of people in the queue?

JohnofWessex · 10/09/2026 16:53

People who design roads, which asylum do they recruit them from?

Where you get several sets of traffic lights and they dont work together, eg coming out of the Southgate Centre Car Park in Bath you get a Green Light BUT cant go because the next set of lights is red and the traffic is blocking your exit.

Worn Out Box Junctions that are barely visible.

No. True. That doesnt stop the speeding youth undertakers though.

TheWytch · 10/09/2026 18:41

The last driver in a string of cars letting me out of a side turning!

Why?

I've already looked behind you and checked it's safe to pull out after you. You stopping is actually delaying me as I then have to register you stopping, realise you are letting me out, check that you really are letting me out, then a final check to my right....

Be much quicker for everyone if you just carried on.....

HangryBrickShark · 10/09/2026 18:45

People constantly braking for no reason, during one stretch of two mile road with bends and gradients the driver in front of me braked 42 times! I kept my distance and took my foot of the accelerator or changed down to the appropriate gear when I needed to slow down and didn't need to brake once!

However, having said that I appreciate its not so easy in an automatic.

Auburngal · 10/09/2026 19:21

Drivers that change lanes all the time for no reason . I saw one car this evening drive 200m, change lanes, drive 100m, then change again.

Drivers that jump red lights. Yes many junctions traffic lights are programmed to improve traffic flow. This evening, three cars jumped the red light from the junction on my right and I was blocked by them as if I went straight on then I would got stuck on the box junction. Then caused problems from those turning left from my left

There’s no such thing as a fast lane. All lanes are the same speed.
calling them slow/fast lanes is part of the problem

Bloody gigantic agricultural vehicles puttering along at 30 in a 60 zone, selfish food-producing twats.

Ok the lane on the far right of the motorway. The one where the slow vehicles don't go. Anyway my point was about undertaking.
