To tell you that Jehovahs Witnesses have a list of people not to call on again?

The Jehovahs Witnesses come to my house every 6 weeks or so. It's annoying for various reasons but lets just say I work nights and am sometimes asleep in the day. The last time they came I told them not to come back and was told I'd be put on a list, like I've been naughty or something.

They've been deviating from their usual pattern of Saturday morning recently and they've come back today, they bypassed my house!! There really is a List! So if you don't want to be disturbed then ask to go on the list 😁

What on earth is the issue here? At the end of all my marketing emails I put an option to opt out of emails. Surely it's the same principle?

It’s a cult like Mormonism, if you give them even a hint of encouragement they’ll keep returning. They like to target vulnerable and lonely people so if you give off those vibes, they’ll be all over you.

Quite.
My grandma's friend lost her husband when her children were very small, local Jehovahs Witnesses ended up knocking on her door, she was lonely and sad (most understandably) and poured her heart out to them.
She joined their Kingdom Hall soon after and has been handing out The Watchtower ever since!
If anything admire her commitment!
She's been trying to convert my gran for 30 years, but my fabulous gran is a Spiritualist!

It's not a naughty list. It's a list of houses with people who have asked them not to visit.

It seems eminently sensible and thoughtful to me.

It's quite clear OP gets that and is letting us know so we can ask to be added to the list!

We had a handwritten letter through the post once. They didn’t put any stamps on it though, so we had to go to the post office and pay the excess postage to get the letter released. Imagine our dismay to open it and find what it was 🤣🤣. This is why the post office make you cough up before you find out what the mystery letter is.

The real reason for the visits isn't really to do with trying to find converts. It's to show the believers that the secular world is full of horrible rude people and so encourage them to stick with their Salvation Army friends. The mormons do the same for the same reasons.

The Salvation Army don't door knock and if they ask for anything via mail campaigns it's money for charity.

Unlike the CofE, SA churches are encouraged to give away as much as physically possible, hence their buildings are very cheaply maintained and often painted in ugly shades of brown because the paint was cheaper!

No pretty windows or golden orbs filled with incense but more poor children and homeless people clothed and fed.

A family member of mine many years ago (around 40 years ago) had Jehovah witnesses knock on her door on Christmas Day. She said, please come in. Before they could say anything, she shouted up the stairs to her DD and said, Mary (not her real name), Brian's parents are here. Mary had arranged for Brian, ( her then boyfriend)to come round with his parents for Christmas dinner.
My family member had never met the parents but she was always very welcoming and had an open house with family/friends.
Mary came down the stairs and said, they arent Brian's parents, who are you. They said we are JW's and this is one of the warmest welcomes we have had. Mary showed them the front door. She then said to her DM, did you wonder where Brian was, she said, I thought he was parking the car.

I learned the list was real 15 years ago. I told them to leave my property and don't come back. They said ok, we'll put you on the list. They've never come back although I often see them in the street. A couple of months ago they were standing in front of my house when I pulled into my garage. Nothing. Bliss.

As a child we lived rurally in a country street. Our neighbour used to pull out his shotgun & clean it whenever they approached. Couldn't do it now, but, hilarious. Didn't stop them....

I have a particular hate for JWs, though , after close friends converted & starting preaching constantly and then said awful things about me because it was apparently my fault we stopped seeing them. Erm, no.

Muffsies · 09/09/2026 14:01

I'll talk to them, i usually ask them about themselves and have a polite convo, but not talk about religion.

One woman kept coming back to post the Watchtower through my letterbox, boy is there some bonkers stuff in there. Not so much about the beliefs, that stuff is what you'd expect, it's more the general stuff about keeping yourself separate from non-witnesses. How to keep yourself brain-washed basically.

LBFseBrom · 09/09/2026 14:03

They never do return if asked not to, that has always been the case.

They can't be as annoying as the old guy around here who knocks round with a product (think similar to Avon) catalogue every few weeks. I always politely say I don't need anything and even told him once that I was more than OK for stuff as I'd been gifted loads, so no need to visit. He still keeps coming. A lot of the time I'm on a work call so can't answer the door, and my dogs go crazy as he just hangs around as we have a large courtyard.

He recently upped the one catalogue to TEN. I feel properly harassed! Like I say, I've asked him to stop but he just says he'll keep trying 😭. I'll swap your Jehovah's for him any day.

GingerdeadMan · 09/09/2026 14:15

We ended up on the naughty list after they knocked on Christmas day and my dad told them to bugger off and stop being disrespectful to those who celebrate.

Then they started up again and my mum gave them a CofE leaflet and told them she'd pray for them. Didn't see them for dust after that 😆

Friendlygingercat · 09/09/2026 14:17

The area I live in is mostly Moslem and Hindu so we don't get many JW around here. Ive seen a group walk past my house, see the cctv and ring doorbell, and say "not there".

AgnesMcDoo · 09/09/2026 14:21

I tell them we are Catholic and they never come back.

Natsku · 09/09/2026 14:24

Its good that you can ask to be put on a list to not be visited. I always enjoy a JW visit though, love a good theological argument. It always ends with them giving up and making an excuse to leave, but then they come back a few months later for another go.

Someone at work once contacted the Jehova's Witnesses asking them to come visit and gave the address of a friend, as a prank. But then he ended up moving to that address and they came to visit him so the prank backfired.

TheBrunswick · 09/09/2026 14:26

My dm is 91.
She has a ring doorbell and stickers not to cold call.
Recently 2 smart ladies (probably Jehovah witnesses) walked up to the door, read the stickers and politely left without ringing the bell.
We could see it all on her app.
Such a shame as I think she would have loved a chat.

farmlass · 09/09/2026 14:33

My DB years ago answered the door to JWs
said he wasn’t interested but to come back next week as our the parents would be very interested .
poor mum and dad had a few visits after that.
DB was not popular.

Vaxtable · 09/09/2026 14:37

I phoned the main Kingdom Hall place in London as we get them from two counties as we are near the border. They took my details and passed them on to local halls so I am bypassed as well

99999xx · 09/09/2026 14:50

One of my best friends is a JW - I can promise you you really don't have to make up that you are a Buddhist/ Satan worshipper/ Catholic and I really doubt they "run away" from the door when you say you are a whatever 🙄. They will have seen everything I bet and if they were that scared of a door knocker they wouldn't have lasted long doing it. It must be terrifying knocking on people's doors so I very much doubt shouting up the stairs about Beelzebub will bother them

We have had many a discussion, and of course there are things we agree/disagree on, but I really hate it when a few oddballs are blamed for condemning a whole religion. I may not like it, but they base their beliefs on the Bible and don't pick and chose what they believe.

From the ones I know they are in every section of society - teachers, doctors, mechanics, LOADS of window cleaners 😁, so it is not as if as someone said they have nothing else to do, it is that they follow Jesus who sent his followers out to preach. You never know - there is a good chance you've interacted with one lose in the wild even today ...

I think the OP's post implies that the list is a negative list when it's not; it's simply an admin tool so that they don't visit people who don't want to be visited.

DeanElderberry · 09/09/2026 15:10

I haven't seen them since well before Covid. Last visit I told them (truthfully) that yes, I love the Bible, find it such a varied and interesting collection of books. Know it quite well, read from it often. I did differ from them in their interpretation of that thing in Romans about blood in food (and elsewhere). And sympathised that they use an abridged form of the Bible with several of the books missing.

It was all very amiable. Can't think why they'd shun me.

bababamama · 09/09/2026 15:24

I told them not to return because I was c of e, they haven’t, they do try not to go to places where they have been asked not to go to

CitizenZ · 09/09/2026 16:02

I love a good visit from the JW's!

They last called around 3 weeks ago, and I kept them debating on the doorstep for a good 40 minutes before they 'had to go'. I'm pretty sure the one stood in the background was coming round to my atheist thinking.
