It was intolerable what she said on This Morning last week.
And now what she's saying today by way of defending herself is even further intolerable.

People only care because she’s “left” so she’s not supposed to say these things. Loads of older disabled people refer to themselves as cripples, so it’s no surprise she does as well.

Roy Chubby Brown usually fills seaside theatres - yes he is far, far worse and people pay to spend the evening hearing it. Jim Davidson is similar and plays to a similar crowd. But yes they are “on the right” so that’s just expected - right?

don’t take offence at the cripple word - my siblings and I use sticks for our mobility and referrals to ourselves an old cripples. MM does the same.

That is between you and your siblings isn't it that is your "humour" I have a life long disability ive not been called a cripple in absolute decades and it was a primary school playground as an insult

Well, ok, then that would be for staff to complain about - what I meant was that we can't police personal opinions (however vile) in a private space. Scrap nursing home for just 'home' then... I'd personally make sure to avoid spending time with someone like that. It's all you can do. The issue here is having a public platform.

I think possibly, in part, she is doing that thing that older educated people sometimes do which is to say awful inappropriate things, but think that they can get away with it because everyone knows they are really good people/on the right side/ hilarious/ charming/whatever and couldn't possibly really be racist or ableist. They are just pushing at boundaries for a joke.

I don't say this as defence, it's still racism, but with an extra helping of arrogant entitlement.

I am actually genuinely horrified at this, possibly (sadly) unsurprised, but also VERY glad I missed it.

I find the posts here suggesting that MM weird race obsession is on account of her liberal politics. Plenty of conservatives / right-wing people are equally race obsessed. I don’t know why some people are pretending otherwise.

I don’t think it’s because of her liberal politics - it’s because she’s a nasty woman who seeks attention because she thinks that she’s an intellectual and that people find her shocking and charming in equal measure every time she uses the word ‘cunt’, something unspeakably racist or tells a sexually explicit anecdote on a talk show.

She is just a tedious woman and the sooner she is cancelled, the better.

I think in their minds they just cannot fathom it as being offensive. It’s like the people who ask people “where are you from, no I mean where are you REALLY from”. No matter how often it’s explained why some take offence in it they just cannot get their head around it. Like trying to explain maths to a butterfly. Some people have a complete inability to put themselves in the shoes of another so assume if they are ok with it everybody else should be ok with it.

I think her personal motto is there's no such thing as bad press. People love controversy especially the "say it as it is" people who also are pretty rude.

Honestly I am gutted by her, I loved her as an actress growing up in James and the giant peach, Harry Potter, Hilda etc.

She is nothing but offensive these days, and nothing like the characters she's portrayed which I guess is a testament to her acting but such a disappointment that she can't recognise that the people who loved her are the people who are now repulsed by her behaviour.

Even in Saddam's Iraq, the elderly could speak their minds without fear - they just didn't do it on national TV.

This woman shouldn't be persecuted but she shouldn't be on TV.

While I definitely think that is true for some there are people who have commented on MN on this issue who have expressed similarly problematic views regarding race. Some who in the other thread criticised MM while defending Lady Susan Hussey who engaged in identical behaviour. So it’s clear for some their objection to what she said is not what she said but rather her politics.

How has she not been cancelled?

Every part of the media knows exactly what to expect from her. There is no point complaining about her as an individual because she is an arsehole and would get a thrill from her continued notoriety. It is the companies that keep inviting her to speak her rancid mind that should be challenged . They keep giving her airtime because they know people will watch, fascination with the horrible perhaps. Why aren’t people doing whatever was done a few years ago to cancel scummy celebrities?
