Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

OP posts:

@Unphased Boris said there would be a points based system, instead of favouring EU residents after Brexit. That is what we have. Many posters at the time said it would lead to more immigration. They were shouted down by Brexit supporters.
I am sorry if you didn't know what you were voting for. But this outcome was made clear at the time.

I'm sick of people using phrases like 'far-right'. Same goes for the word 'fascist'. What is a fascist? A fascist is intolerant, dictatorial and hate-filled. He is determined to impose his will on others. Now that's a perfect description of the so-called 'liberal' left. No one on Earth is more spiteful, vicious, hate-filled, intolerant or dictatorial than them. But because their hate is directed towards middle-class Mail readers, somehow it's OK.

People who support Reform and the AfD just want to be left alone. They want to hang on to their national identity. They don't want mass immigration because it destroys any sense of shared history and shared culture. Their motives are defensive. It's the globalist left who are the fascists and bullies. They're the ones trying to IMPOSE things on people. No European asked for multiculturalism. There was never any referendum. This profound change has been forced on us, and those who speak out are 'cancelled' or arrested for 'hate speech'.

It's the left who are trying to restrict free speech. It's the left who are removing books from libraries. It's the left who want the literary canon dismantled and classic novels re-written. It's the left who are trying to control what we can say and think and write.

Preach. Great post.

Just Stop Oil have used traffic disruption on many occasions, it seems this protest borrowed that idea.

We live in a democracy, ergo I can live with the occasional traffic disruption.

Isn’t there a call for Kent police to state why no arrests were made, when arrests were made in similar circumstances when Just Stop Oil disrupted traffic?

I am all for peaceful protests but I am against traffic disruption because that’s putting peoples lives at risks and making the poorest in society suffer the most.

If they were late for work they would have had their salary docked, if they were late to pick up their children from childcare they’d have to pay double the rates etc.

I believe the reasons given for the acceptance of asylum seekers and other non visa entrants is due to the UN Refugee Convention. A reason, an excuse, justification, reality, call it what you will.

Bearing in mind that this Convention was ratified post WW2 in 1951 and was genuinely supportive of war refugees at the time.

Fast forward to today. That same convention is being used as a basis under International Law to justify the reason the boats/asylum seekers etc. cannot be turned back. Maybe that's an over simplification but I'm sure I will be told if so!

The Convention is over 70 years in existence now. Maybe it's time for a revision of this now. Refugees from war yes, all others (economic) not automatically. Or something like that.

I suppose the difficulty is identifying who is and isn't fleeing war zones if they have destroyed passports and no one has a clue who they are or where they are coming from.

But look, times have changed and even a big meeting somewhere amongst all the signatories where they can eat lovely food, stay in nice hotels, discuss our futures as citizens and decide what's fair might be worthwhile to get the issue out in the open!

Somehow I am not sure if anything would be achieved. I always say "Follow the money", because someone somewhere is benefitting from this, and it's not the citizens of a country AFAIS.

I await a torrent of - oh I don't know what for saying all that.

If you're following the money on the asylum and immigration 'debate', the people profiting from it are people like Nigel Farage. His income depends heavily on attention: broadcasting, social media, speaking engagements, journalism and paid promotional work. Being an MP is a side hustle - he's earned about £2 million on top of his MP’s salary since the 2024 election by May 2026. Anti-immigration rhetoric is exceptionally effective at generating that attention because it produces fear, anger, argument and constant coverage. Every controversy creates clips, interviews, social engagement and invitations to speak, while also strengthening his political brand as the man prepared to say what others supposedly will not.

That creates a clear financial incentive structure: the more polarising and culturally dominant Farage becomes, the more valuable he becomes as a brand. He got paid £685,500 to advertise one gold bullion company, and his ability to command sums like that rests substantially on having a huge, highly engaged public audience.

Kent Police Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Brookes says in a statement: "It is important we distinguish between conduct we find objectionable and disruptive, and conduct which constitutes a criminal offence."
He says the only offence police are currently investigating was damage to a road.
He adds: "We will examine the intelligence process, but it is important to note that we do not as a matter of course monitor peaceful protesters, and their political viewpoints are not taken into consideration."
The police say they are disappointed there was so much disruption in the town, but insist they had engaged with those causing it to bring the demonstration to an end by lunchtime.

I mean the thread was created at 7am - is one required to abandon their whole day to sit and respond to comments all day 😂?? people have things to to and lives out side of here ….

this comment would make sense on an AMA , but but not really an aibu

@Contain4 actually I don't think people understood that at all - in fact they believed the opposite: that it would give the UK more control over their borders because people from the EU would no longer be able to come and go, work, live etc easily, when the effect is that we have as much migration as ever, but its from outside the EU. Plus the EU no longer have a vested interest in preventing UK bound illegal migration because if they do end up in the UK, it is no longer an EU problem or coming out of their purse. We are having to do deals and pay France for their cooperation.

Sadly, I think that many, many British voters had no understanding at all about the benefits and costs of EU membership at all. In fact many of them don’t even understand the UK political or legislative process - a damning indictment of our education system really.

And many political parties - and the media - fed and exploited this ignorance.

I think you should find out more about the AfD. I couldn't disagree with you more. The BBC today

But it would have significant local powers. The party has been particularly critical of the Bauhaus school of design which the Nazis shut down in the city of Dessau in Saxony-Anhalt after they came to power in 1933. The AfD has called it "the dead-end of modernism", prompting some to accuse the party of using similar language to the Nazis.
Nikita, a demonstrator at an anti-AfD "Democracy Festival" in Magdeburg on the eve of the vote said Germans had to "learn from our history and not go back. We don't want the dark times any more".
Responding to the news from Saxony-Anhalt, the veteran head of the Jewish community in Munich and Bavaria, Charlotte Knobloch, said it frightened her. "On days like this I find it hard to recognise my homeland any more," the 93-year-old Holocaust survivor said, appealing for mainstream parties not to stand by and allow "this decline".

The term “far right” has lost much of its power since it began to be weaponised against any woman who believes in women only spaces or sports or meetings etc. Language is notoriously adaptive, with the result that loads of people now shrug off “far right” because if freedom of belief or expression is far right, ok then.

It means that the term is now very loose - there is little similarity between believing men should not punch women in the face as an Olympic sport and several other very ugly beliefs that actually are what I would recognise from Times Gone By as far right.

I would file not liking Bauhaus as similar.

AfD are indeed scary af; they really don’t want to support Ukraine which is very bad news imo.

People who blame 'immigrants' for our problems, are lacking in intelligence really. Thick as pigshit. Or so full of hatred they can't see straight.
Reformers and their ilk can't string a logical sentence together. And people just lap it up. Farage is an embarrassment. Did anyone see Nadine dorries being interviewed the other day?? And jenrick this morning on LBC? JFC....I feel like I'm in the twilight zone sometimes.

Yes !!

Why would the reaction of posters to you on MN make you shift your political position?
Surely you decide whether you are left, right or centrist based on the underlining values and approaches of those positions, taking into account their social and economic priorities and direction? You decide which most closely align with your own at that time, and vote accordingly.
What on earth does someone calling you racist or far right have to do with it? If someone called me those things I'd not think 'oh I must be then because a radomer said so' and decide to move further towards those who actually are.

I agree with @CouldICopeWithAnotherPuppy . If, by raising worries based on actual lived experience, people are insulted as being racist, far right, thick etc they will move towards the likes of Reform out of desperation.

If Reform are voted into power next time it will be due in no small part to many people being shut down as racists instead of their experiences being listened to rationally instead of insulted into shutting up.

Daygloboo · Today 15:01

Are you talking about the poor woman who was assaulted by Reform supporters while Farage stood on stage laughing?

I guess freedom of speech isn't that popular amongst Reform supporters after all.

Ha. Can you imagine if Farage and his mob got in. Pretty soon there'd be no freedom of speech for anyone except him and his cronies.

Interesting, what are you thinking should happen? Should there be limits to the people arriving at all?

Nothing to do with who arrives. We can make the rules stricter for arrivals as long as it's fair on those who are already here. Like I said, one set of rights for all residents and only judge people on what they do. It's hardly revolutionary; it's been a foundation of the rule of law.

@user35637865986 Some people like to be seen to be doing good, it makes them feel better about themselves especially if they messed up in their earlier lives. Most people just want to get on with life they don’t feel the need to virtue signal though the internet means they can signal all they want without even having to get off their arse these days.

I have a relative who is an absolute shithead but because they post likes to animal charities they feel good about themselves. Doesn’t change who they fundamentally are.

Some people do good because they have empathy and dont want people to suffer. I think that is a very healthy way to live your life. It's got nothing to do with wanting to be seen to be doing good just to get brownie points. What a cynical attitude you have. You're a sad soul.

I don't think they understand that immigration is cumulative and has a permanent effect on changing the population.

Treating a native population like this is inhumane.

Key Statistics on Foreign-Born Parents

  • Mothers born abroad: In recent annual data releases by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), non-UK-born mothers accounted for roughly 33.9% to over 34% of all live births. 1, 2]
  • At least one foreign-born parent: The proportion of newborns with either one or both parents born outside the UK reached a record high of 40.2%. 1]
  • Top countries of origin: The most common countries of birth for non-UK-born mothers include India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Romania. 1]
  • Regional variation: Concentrations are highest in urban centers like London, where nearly two-thirds or more of births involve at least one foreign-born parent, compared to much lower rates in parts of Wales and Northern England.

@Lemonraider, please clarify what exactly your problem is with my dd, who has a foreign-born parent?

As a law-abiding young woman who volunteers in her local community and is currently training to be a doctor, what harm can you possibly feel she is doing to you? Is it merely that the colour of her skin offends you?

Do you realise how deeply hurtful your comments are to innocent British citizens who have done nothing wrong? Do you care?

You may have a trans-free society under an AfD regime - it sounds like you aspire to such a thing- but you would lose all your rights as a woman. Your sole purpose in their eyes is breeder and that's it.

And to those who argue the AfD is not the direct heir to the NSDAP, you are so naive! Either naive or gaslighting everyone else. See this poster for yourself. Do you get frightened by all face coverings and disruptions? There's been quite a few for the last 3 years. There's been images shown on this thread, in case you missed them.

OneLilacHedgehog · Today 15:21

@LuckyHazelFox yes I find a large group of all men dressed in black and with face coverings intimidating. Wouldn't you?
Doubly so when they refuse to talk to local people to explain who they are, and have no leaflets or banners to explain who they are.

You quoted my comment but ignored my question. So I assume you don't think the local people made very late for work or who missed their holiday ferry matter?
