Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

You know Nazism was never just about Jews right? It was also about Roma, Slavs, black people, disabled people, Communists, socialists.

You're reinforcing acceptance of a similar ideology by pretending it's ok because it's not about the Jews this time.

In fact antisemitism is very much on the rise, particulalry in the wake of ordinary British Jews subject to retribution over the latest escalation of the Israel/Palestine conflict.

Whether it's emanating from the left or the right - which is a pretty crude distinction anyway in this day and age - racism is still racism.

What concerns me is that racism is being legitimised on many areas of the political spectrum, that misogyny is on the increase thanks to Incel culture and women are being shoved over in the street for laughs, and that gangs of organised criminals are playing cat and mouse on our major roads causing innocent bystanders to be killed. The latter two receive far less coverage compared with the recent wave of protests against small boats or attacks on women by asylum seekers. The manosphere and the county lines/organised criminal gangs typically receive less pushback. Is this possibly because these are two problems that can't be blamed wholly on immigrants?

The swing to the right is horrifying to me, for one, but I believe the left needs to take a long, hard look at itself and honestly reflect on how they've contributed to the whole mess. People are voting right because they feel no one else will serve their interests. And they're not going to be stopped by others accusing them of an 'ism', because they no longer actually care about censure.

It's all a complicated, messy fuck up and can't so easily be separated out into strands of strong adherence to left- or right-wing support, since that distinction no longer means what it used to mean. They hate each other, but they can't see how alike they often are.

They'll be busy on the other thread saying the KKK are taking over and the peaceful Dover protestors were dressed up as the SS. Yep, that was indeed posted.

That is obviously not the case. But they were dressed to intimidate and scare people. They were dressed like thugs and are scary.

I'm sick of people using phrases like 'far-right'. Same goes for the word 'fascist'. What is a fascist? A fascist is intolerant, dictatorial and hate-filled. He is determined to impose his will on others. Now that's a perfect description of the so-called 'liberal' left. No one on Earth is more spiteful, vicious, hate-filled, intolerant or dictatorial than them. But because their hate is directed towards middle-class Mail readers, somehow it's OK.

People who support Reform and the AfD just want to be left alone. They want to hang on to their national identity. They don't want mass immigration because it destroys any sense of shared history and shared culture. Their motives are defensive. It's the globalist left who are the fascists and bullies. They're the ones trying to IMPOSE things on people. No European asked for multiculturalism. There was never any referendum. This profound change has been forced on us, and those who speak out are 'cancelled' or arrested for 'hate speech'.

It's the left who are trying to restrict free speech. It's the left who are removing books from libraries. It's the left who want the literary canon dismantled and classic novels re-written. It's the left who are trying to control what we can say and think and write.

I'm sick of people using phrases like 'far-right'.

Because the AfD are literally proscribed as an ‘extreme far right’ group in Germany.

OneLilacHedgehog · Today 13:51

@SerafinasGoose it's actually the political failure of the conservative party that is at fault. Labour ar3 pretty moderate. The greens have mopped up the extreme left. And the conservative party have almost disappeared. That means those on the conservative party right have in many cases being wooed by the far right, often successfully.
The conservative party need to get their act together.

I think you should find out more about the AfD. I couldn't disagree with you more. The BBC today

But it would have significant local powers. The party has been particularly critical of the Bauhaus school of design which the Nazis shut down in the city of Dessau in Saxony-Anhalt after they came to power in 1933. The AfD has called it "the dead-end of modernism", prompting some to accuse the party of using similar language to the Nazis.
Nikita, a demonstrator at an anti-AfD "Democracy Festival" in Magdeburg on the eve of the vote said Germans had to "learn from our history and not go back. We don't want the dark times any more".
Responding to the news from Saxony-Anhalt, the veteran head of the Jewish community in Munich and Bavaria, Charlotte Knobloch, said it frightened her. "On days like this I find it hard to recognise my homeland any more," the 93-year-old Holocaust survivor said, appealing for mainstream parties not to stand by and allow "this decline".

Thanks for your support.

Yes I should have called them young, foreign men arriving with no skills and a poor attitude to woman. Arriving illegally and making locals feel intimidated.

If these men were white and had all the same attributes I would also want them stopped.

However since it is black/brown young, foreign men with no skills and a poor attitude to woman I shortened it.

I'm pretty sure most people knew what I meant.

And you are right it is making me (and others like me) go further to the right.

Why would the reaction of posters to you on MN make you shift your political position?
Surely you decide whether you are left, right or centrist based on the underlining values and approaches of those positions, taking into account their social and economic priorities and direction? You decide which most closely align with your own at that time, and vote accordingly.
What on earth does someone calling you racist or far right have to do with it? If someone called me those things I'd not think 'oh I must be then because a radomer said so' and decide to move further towards those who actually are.

Coconutter24 · Today 13:55

Summerhillsquare · Today 07:36

No, deporting people based on the colour of their skin or religion was never a centrist position.

YANBU OP, but don't give up hope. The quieter majority are tolerant and sensible in the UK.

People aren’t being deported because of the colour of their skin, people get deported because they are somewhere illegally

OneLilacHedgehog · Today 13:56

The afd talk about family values. They are quite clear they mean anti abortion, women at home with kids, lesbian and gay people firmly in the closet, and women with kids being married to a husband.

dustabsorber · Today 13:57

Far left, far right, just as bad as each other. Google the horseshoe theory.

Trump wants to deport people because of the colour of their skin. Farage is our equivalent and trump and farage are friends.

Trump was not elected saying he wanted to deport people for the colour of their skin. That came later. Generally these politicians do not reveal their more extreme wishes until after they are elected.

Unless our government addresses why the far right is rising nothing will change.

Desperate people who feel they are becoming poorer & more and more unsafe in their local areas will always veer to the side of protecting what is theirs. It shocks me that people are still shocked by this. its a tale as old as time.

This.
far right support will weaken significantly when the government addresses the issues and doesn’t just try to raise tax to cover them.

Contain4 · Today 13:59

but I believe the left needs to take a long, hard look at itself and honestly reflect on how they've contributed to the whole mess.

Although I think it’s important for both sides to always reflect on their actions, I think the right need to reflect on how they messed up when voting for Brexit.

Brexit caused a massive increase in immigration, especially of non-EU citizens.

It also reduced our say in how we handle the asylum seekers and illegal immigrants.

Farage was pushing for this and people were saying how the NHS is going to crumble under the strain, how the cost of living is going to rise etc but still people voted to leave.

Of course other things have added to the problem but I can’t see how anyone can have any trust in Farage when he knowingly manipulated people into leaving the EU, knowing full well that it would remove our rights in removing asylum seekers etc

The same people who voted to leave the EU and accept less control over illegal immigration etc are the same people still listening to Farage and moaning about illegal immigration (yet somehow thinking they’re the ones who are hard done by).

There were no arrests at the protest, thus hindsight can reassure you that your 'thug' impression was wrong.

I'd suggest they were dressed thus in order to be unidentifiable. Not because they intended to break the law, we know now that they didn't, but because they know putting their head above the parapet on this particular issue is fraught with danger (to their livelihoods and such like). That they felt that way doesn't strike me as terribly democratic.

If you put me in front of Tommy Robinson, he'd tell me to go "home".

And the irony is that he doesn’t even live here himself.

‘Loves this country’ yet refuses to live here or pay tax here.
Doesn’t have a job but owns at least 2 homes in other countries and is constantly on holiday in places like Dubai.

Probably enjoys a good old Indian takeaway too! 😂

OneLilacHedgehog · Today 14:07

@JasmineMac they stopped traffic for a prolonged period. That is illegal.
They were all men dressed in black and balaclavas. They carried no posters or leaflets identifying what group they were from or what they were protesting. Local people and drivers say when they tried to talk to them, they ignored them.

All of that is scary and intimidating. I believe it was designed to be.

Of course. The PP implied there were 813K extra souls needing homes, jobs etc when in fact the net number of extra souls was 177K.

Actually you didn't make a point, you vaguely referred to gaslighting , which was not present- the only point you have made is that you don't understand what you are saying and when challegned will not explain- so well done as an exercise in pointlessness ten out of ten.

Actually, it’s not that simple, though, is it - because unless the 694k incoming people are taking the same jobs, homes and school places vacated by the outgoing 694k that make up the difference… we still need 813k jobs and homes?

ETA, remember that many of those leaving the UK will be new graduates who have not worked or owned homes in the UK yet, retirees who are no longer economically active in the sense of being workers, and will include the children of adults who are leaving so, again, will not have owned homes or worked. So the ‘net migration’ figure is a blunt statistic as it simply refers to the number of human souls entering and leaving and is of no use when inferring the economic or social impact of incomers v out-goers.

Just Stop Oil have used traffic disruption on many occasions, it seems this protest borrowed that idea.

We live in a democracy, ergo I can live with the occasional traffic disruption.

You do realise that the people that voted leave, were not the ones negotiating the terms for the UK leaving, the politicians have let the country down and are still letting the country down re immigration,

Frankfurterwuerstchen · Today 14:31

In Germany it is worrying, but it is only 1 of 16 states where the AfD has got a record number of votes.
However, they don't have a majority and most of the major parties have refused to form a coalition with them, mainly because they have been classified as an extreme right party.
Most of their policies are unworkable and go against the German constitution.
It's still unclear how this is going to play out, but it has definitely changed the mood in Germany.
People now feel they have the right to be openly racist towards others and I have witnessed more of this in the last year than I ever have before.
