Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

There are worries and is a serious conversation to be had about illegal immigration but the solution is most definitely not to turn to the far right

What form would this serious conversation about illegal immigration take?

Do you think people are far right because of their concerns about immigration, rapes and rise in crime?

No, I think people are far right because a) they support a party that is actively working to reduce our rights and freedoms, and b) they negatively stereotype entire demographics based on ethnicity.

It absolutely is true.

Political labels aren’t fixed points in time because the political centre moves. Positions that were mainstream 20, 30 or 50 years ago are considered far right today.

That doesn’t mean the exact same people or movements were “far right” then; it means the Overton window has shifted.

You can disagree about where the line should be drawn if you really want, but pretending the political centre never moves historically just isn’t accurate.

Wondering if you have any examples of positions that were mainstream 20, 30 or 50 years ago and that are considered far right today? I can't imagine that anti-migrant activism and national populism and the sort of behaviour we saw in Dover this weekend have ever been considered centrist.

Yes, the number of people migrating to the UK is down, but it's still 813,000 people (2025) that need, housing, healthcare and education and understandably a concern for some people.

(2026 migration figures not available yet)

This number includes people who are coming with a working visa, and are often well off and in well paid jobs.

There are new build estates around us full of people from Hong Kong, they tend to buy their houses in cash, and are wealthy.

Cherry8809 · Today 12:55

I’m not concerned, nor am I remotely surprised that this is what it’s coming to.

What you’re seeing is the product of people feeling unheard for decades, exacerbated in recent years.

A session with a diversity trainer and some cake (not Victoria sponge though).

Are you talking about the poor woman who was assaulted by Reform supporters while Farage stood on stage laughing?

I guess freedom of speech isn't that popular amongst Reform supporters after all.

You would need to ask a Reform supporter, wouldn't you?

Ok… I mean maybe don’t set the tone as in your first post next time.

It'd be hilarious is not all so very bizarre.
Criticise daytime posters as sahp, disabled, no friends whilst posting in the daytime!

Say we're far right wing for objecting to undocumented, unvetted men entering in their hundreds then admit they don't want that either! Yeah but no but they're different or some such Confused.

No, deporting people based on the colour of their skin or religion was never a centrist position.

YANBU OP, but don't give up hope. The quieter majority are tolerant and sensible in the UK.

Those who want to do that are actually far right. Most people in the UK described as far right don't want those things, but they do want to deport illegal migrants who come here for a better life, no matter what colour or religion they are. It just so happens that a huge number of them are not white and are perceived as Muslims, but they would feel equally about any other ethnic or religious group. We welcomed the Ukrainian women and children on a strictly temporary basis; the same should apply to all other asylum seekers - why do those from developing nations seem to be granted ILR rather than temporary asylum? Special treatment for those who aren't white?

I don't want more babies in this country. We are not benefiting from the massive population increase through immigrants at all. Who cares what ludicrous names you call it. The native population is actually quite stable over time in comparison to the constant hysterical reporting about decline. I have no interest in paying tax for foreigners maternity services and childcare. Again, use whatever ineffectual leftist critisism you like. Millions of us don't want to live in a majority Indian Pakistani African Arab country. You can't force us to stop saying it.

So having one or both parents born abroad disqualifies someone from calling themselves British? Do you think someone like Kemi Badenoch isn't Biritsh? Or Priti Patel? Or indeed Reform's own Zia Yusuf (whose parents were both born in Sri Lanka)?

But it’s not “anti-migrant” behaviour, is it?

Because the vast majority don’t take offence to educated, law-abiding immigrants coming to the UK to work in legitimate jobs and contributing to society. What they do take offence to is undocumented men, rocking up en-masse, passing through many “safe” countries to seek asylum here. Many of which have demonstrated behaviours that are entirely incompatible with Western values and practices.

If the far right becomes stronger then the main parties hzve only themselves to blame. A country must have the right to control its borders.

They do. Maybe King Andy will be more proactive, he does seem a doer <so far>.

But even the numbers arriving are down too.

Also isn’t the “net drain” argument a little reductive. It focuses solely on money instead of the actual jobs many do. I don’t think, for example, carers are a drain on a society even if they are low paid.

Edited

I'm just back from visiting a location in the US. East coast, very tourist-driven economy and many restaurants and hospitality venues are only open Weds or Thurs-Sat as they're struggling for staff, due in large part to the administration's draconian immigration policies.

It’s very much in Russia’s interest to have Europe broken back up into bite sized countries (closed borders) or in-fighting (don’t look this way).

Few internet bots, made so much easier with AI, roll them out, wait.

Exactly, find something that is being discussed (how to reduce immigration) and whip it up using all the bots and algorithms to create as much hate and division as possible. Meanwhile the greed and power obsessed billionaires can feed off the hate and despair.

It’s the old saying…divide and conquer. It’s no coincidence that Putin was in favour of Brexit.

People who blame 'immigrants' for our problems, are lacking in intelligence really. Thick as pigshit. Or so full of hatred they can't see straight.
Reformers and their ilk can't string a logical sentence together. And people just lap it up. Farage is an embarrassment. Did anyone see Nadine dorries being interviewed the other day?? And jenrick this morning on LBC? JFC....I feel like I'm in the twilight zone sometimes.

I don't think most people are blaming 'immigrants' for all our problems.
But they can see that immigration is causing some problems. For example, allowing large numbers of young men from cultures with very different attitudes to women to be free to hang around in our communities causes sexual harassment of young women and girls.

If you want to prevent the rise of 'far right' parties, calling people who are concerned about the problems caused by uncontrolled immigration 'thick as pigshit', is not a very effective way of proceeding. And it doesn't make you look very intelligent.

(By the way, I am half way through reading the AFD manifesto, and I agree with most of it so far. Until the last election, I'd always voted for 'left wing parties'. I've never believed that men can be women, all whites are racist, that offending people should be illegal, or that enforcing borders is breeching anyone's human rights. I must be 'far right'.)

Net migration to UK in 2025 was only 177,000 not 813,000 but I'm sure that you know that.

You do realise migration and net migration are different things?

I didn’t criticise daytime posters - else I’d be criticising myself.
But by all means keep banging that drum if you have nothing better to say.

And I never once called you far right.
Unless I’ve missed it, I can’t see anyone else calling you far right either.
But by all means carry on banging that drum too.

If you stop talking and listen to what people are saying then perhaps you wouldn’t have to make stuff up or get confused.

You don’t have to be far right to be concerned about mass illegal immigration (or a number of other things) but if you align yourselves with far right views, then you are far right.
Why is that difficult to understand?

I'm not confused. Do try to post without this constant insults. It doesn't help your argument you know and no, I'm not 'offended'.
