Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

Why do you keep avoiding the question.

It’s really not a difficult one.

Why were you not at the protests on the weekend?

If you think these men did the right thing and you whole heartedly agree with their stance and the way they handled things - why were you not by their sides supporting them?

The truth is you will not go to one of these protests because you would not feel safe (and I don’t blame you).

Women do not go to these protests because these men are dangerous and you would fear that you would be sexually assaulted, raped or simply attacked.

These men do not care about women and children and the proof is in the pudding because there are never (or hardly any) women present.

Too much immigration is an important topic that needs addressing.
But we do not need aggressive, violent, women-hating far right men doing it for us.

Yes, but this is what happens when important issues are ignored, downplayed and the people raising them get shouted down as racists and bigots.

This is what's happening in Germany now. It was entirely predictable by anyone who didn't have their heads buried in the sand.

scatterolight · Today 11:47

There is no far right. Instead we've been suffering under far left extremism for decades. The open borders extremism of Western governments despite constantly promising at the ballot box to reduce immigration is driving the population to distraction. If voting does not work what are people supposed to do?

With regard to the boats, the hotels and posting the illegals all around the country to villages and market towns it is very hard for the government to justify what it’s doing (and not doing) in moral terms. We know these aren’t real asylum seekers, we know some will commit crimes, some may even be terrorists, and at best they’ll cause massive social unrest and be a welfare burden for the rest of their lives. Thus the government is failing in its basic duty to keep citizens safe.

And even if all that wasn’t true, the British people have clearly expressed for years that they don’t want these migrants here, so the government is also ignoring the will of the people. Hence if what the government is doing is legal, then clearly those laws are wrong. It can’t in any meaningful sense be legal to flood the country with dangerous illegal migrants.

On this issue our government is illegitimate on every level. I expect the protests to get bigger and more organised with the whole NGO/state apparatus that facilitates this being targeted.

This post sums it up for me. The original post was expressing genuine concerns about how she and others felt because of the change on the demographs of her community. Maybe not how all of us would express it, but they are her words. The context was set about the poster being a law abiding middle aged educated women who worked and participated in her community all her life but is now drawn to a position she never had before. A brave post in the context of the current debate. These are very pertinent facts for this debate, which is why the 'far right' is gaining support.

But the response is to highlight how many times she said Black and Brown, imply she is a racist and tell her how to express herself. Wrapped up with a bit of virtue signalling and patting on the head from the responder.
No attempt to try and understand her position or even give to rationale debate. Just labelling. Polite labelling, I'll give them that.
Then the 'spreading fear' bit.
Maybe, just maybe, there is genuine fear in some communities and it doesn't need 'spreading'.
This wasn't a rabid ideological response, but it shows the embedded nature of where we are right now. You are wrong if you don't agree with me.d
Entrenched and divisive positions are far more dangerous to our society than an election in Germany.

But it’s a fair question. Why is the skin tone of her neighbours so relevant? She did not mention changes to do with national origin but simply skin tone. Why are we required to just glaze over that?

There are also black and brown Britons who are concerned about migration levels and rapid cultural change but reducing it to skin tone alienates them from the topic (and also suggests that if the rapid demographic change was due to white skinned Europeans or Kiwis they would be fine with it.)

Why is it ok for the PP to voice their discomfort with her neighbours skin tone but not ok for us to voice our discomfort with her focus on skin tone?

I don’t want the boats coming anymore, basically all of the uk doesn’t hence reform getting so many supporters. That doesn’t make us far right, or racist.

European here. Yes, the AfD is worrying, but if I were in the UK I'd be worried about the black-clad men blocking roads out of Dover at the moment?

We're European in UK too. We're all Europeans together. But thanks for letting us know.

Oops posted twice, but may as well mention the Henry nowak case.. Have we really gotten to the point where political correctness is treating the victims as the perpetrator?
Not comparing that to the Portsmouth incident yesterday, but it's something to think about, not to mention the pitiful sentences for rapes where victims have been afraid to come forward as they are basically accused of being racist.

Edited

My mom said the goverment are being paid to take the illegal immigrants, didn’t believe her but thinking about it, I wouldn’t be suprised if that is the case.

I have no doubt that they are concerned. For their own political futures I reckon! However, talk is cheap, so have they outlined any policy initiatives, any engagement with the public, any positive spin for people, any comfort blanket?

That's rhetorical, I'm obviously not asking YOU about this!

Time for talking and hand wringing is over now. People are getting very angry. Whether that is justified or not doesn't matter, there needs to be a re balancing and focus on people's QOL in all respects.

Its very difficult to get a handle on whether 'people' are really angry though isn't it, and if they are, about what.
All we really know is that 46% of the electorate see immigration as an important issue, but only 20% see it a top issue. And that of that 20% a tiny minority are protesting.
Because that minority are extremely vocal and prone to the sort of violent disorder that makes the news, and are messaging heavily they are 'the voice of the people' its easy to be misled into thinking the UK population as a whole is 'furious' about immigration, rather than simply concerned alongside a concern for a number of other priorities.
When Starmer spoke of the rise of the right, I don't believe he was suggesting the whole electorate has become far right. We know from the polls they have not. I think he was speaking of the increased platform the actual far right are getting and the threat this poses to our safety and democracy.

You’re asking and answering in the same post. I’m not giving you the answer to your repeated question because your initial posts on the thread were to insult, and beyond that it’s pointless.

Thank you for proving my point.

I love how some posters pretend to get insulted and feel ‘personally attacked’ when they cant answer a question without looking stupid.

Why come on a discussion thread if you’re going to pretend to be insulted everytime you disagree with a poster but can’t think of anything to say.

I personally think this is such an important topic and so many people say they’ve not been heard and so it’s so important to discuss it and hear people’s views.
But that’s tricky when people get offended over ‘hurty words’

(although I never said anything offensive, if you took offence to it then that says more about you and how you view your life)

I think the scale and pace of demographic change is unprecedented.
i live somewhere where 50 years ago according to an older friend, the community was pretty homogeneous, people knew each other and many socialized together .
Now I can walk down our local high street and not hear English spoken. People largely keep to their own communities - cafes, places of worship, housing areas.
Many immigrants have made huge contributions to this country but I feel there are people are arriving now who won’t do that, will be a drain on resources.

YABVU. And what is described as the “far right” now was centralist not that long ago.

really?

What a weird definition of centralist.

LondonLass61 · Today 11:54

Nesbi · Today 07:40

this is so far from true it is laughable. But I recognise your name from another thread - I see you!

Painting the far right a the centrism of yesterday is utter bollocks to anyone who has watched this country over the last 4 or 5 decades.

There are people on this site who are clearly on a recruitment drive at the moment. You can tell by the stench - division, fear, intolerance, calls to their narrowly defined views of patriotism or the home country. Dressing up like fucking brownshirts.

This.

I’m not proving anything for you. I really don’t see the point in engaging with anyone who goes on about shifts, bots, right wingers etc. as they’re clearly only looking for one view, BlueSky is probably better.

There are many ways to look at the "rise of the far right", but it literally is democracy in action.

Personally I'm not surprised at the swing to the right, especially in the UK, where the establish parties have voted in on the promise of reducing immigration, but failed to deliver.

Very incorrect , there’s a whole lot of scholarship on how the current climate of popularism isn’t just ‘democracy in action’ and is threatening to democracy

You mention race a lot in your post. Why do you keep mentioning the melanin levels of your neighbours? Why does it matter?

The whole point of my thread is the people in my community (and others) is changing quite dramatically. A big noticable increase in single black men talking loudly in a foreign language.

Of course you already knew that but were trying to be a smart ass.

We are all from the UK (most of MN is anyway).

Why do you think we don’t care about OUR country, where we and our children have to live?

We want limitations on immigration and we want feel safe in our country, just as much as those men protesting pretend they do.

We just also aren’t racist, ableist, ageist or sexist with it.

And yes it does make you far right if you go around calling yourself far right - that’s kind of the point.

No actually I don’t know why their race is relevant. If your concern is lots of people speaking foreign language why is skin tone relevant to that?

Define 'common sense'?

Roland Barthes was on the money when he said: “We know that the war against intelligence is always waged in the name of common sense.” Mythologies.

It usually means "what I think".

It is not too late but requires direct leadership, possibly unpleasant decisions and getting people convinced that the government are in charge, and know what they are doing.

For many years concerns and engagement with the "lower orders", people who we might hold out noses and sneer at, but people who count as much as "people like us" has been avoided and ignored. Unhappiness, misunderstandings have been avoided and papered over. No surprise that there is rising resentment and is still being mishandled.

Bear in mind that to the elite in power the rest of us are all 'lower orders'. They mean us when they mean the hoi polloi.
