Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

Jeez. No insult at all. It was an observation about the dynamics of posting on MN.

Right-wingers are all knuckle-dragging morons. Now that's an insult.

You’re posting on ‘shifts’ too then? Fine go for it.

’Right-wingers’ and the rest it’s nonsense.

I haven’t read anyone making light of the immigration problems?

Can you quote a couple as I must have missed them?

This thread is about the rise of the far right - that includes anti-immigration views, alongside other things like misogyny, ableism and racism.

But your question is redundant.
The Cotswolds is a beautiful place but I wouldn’t pick up sticks and move there tomorrow because I have a life, family, job, caring responsibilities etc here.

I don’t think anyone would pick up sticks and move anywhere tomorrow unless they were in an extremely unsafe situation, so you asked that particular question knowing that no one would agree to do it.
You know you would have gotten the same answer in any place you chose to say.

If you think that spectacularly missing the point by feigning literal mindedness makes you appear clever… that’s sad.

No. I am however worried about remaining in this dire state of where we currently are.

I live in Scotland. Not in a big city. Chatting to hairdresser last week. She lives in a small village. Her local shop has black/brown men hanging about outside. She admits to feeling intimidated. On entering the shop they are playing prayer music. This is an ex mining village which is now being used it seems for these men coming across here.

I live in a bigger town about ten miles away and in recent weeks have noticed an increase in the numbers of young black men usually on their own talking loudly on their phones in a foreign language. A trip to the local park with the dog had me experiencing a surreal out of body feeling as everywhere I looked there was black/brown people. I live somewhere that traditionally would have almost none.
I actually started to feel like I was the only white person there.

The hairdresser told me two of her other customers that morning had both said similar things. They lived in different places to her and I but all within a non city part of Scotland. Her clients are mostly my age and older. So I'm white, in my fifties and retired from a professional job. She has lots of middle aged and older ladies as clients. Yes we are all noticing and we are all feeling frightened and angry.

I can't get a GP appointment because the NHS is falling apart (lets not kid ourselves).
Our young people can't get jobs. Our finances are dire. We have another short term PM (again lets not kid ourselves)

I feel utterly outraged at what is happening to this country and how we have no control it seems over our borders. I was reading about the protests last night and was firmly on the side on the men who were at least trying to show how lots of us feel. Of course that does not matter what we want. The police just 'did their jobs' and chased away the concerned citizens and welcomed the black, young men (not doubt with no skills) into our failing economy country.

I've never broken a law in my life. I did a very boring job after uni. I can actually see myself going on a protest soon for the first time in my life.

We need a restore government. Wanting to put your own citizens first is not 'far right'. It's just sensible. If we didn't have such a reputation for 'fairness' which lets be honest is now being touted round the world as complete bloody mugs with no ability to stand up for themselves.

If the IMF bail us out (which it seems they couldn't afford to do anyway) I hope at least an upside is the 'asylum seekers' (aye right!!) will stop coming.

Like the vast majority of people I have no issue with real asylum seekers applying to the UK for help. That is not what is going on here.

So what happens when our already shrinking police force can no longer control the amount of young black men they have let in here. We already know the police is struggling. Criminals are getting out of prison early. Frontline officers are already scarce and are leaving in droves due to the stress (source friend who is front line police officer). Should we just sit and wait until our country is actually being taken over by immigrants and we all just have to do what we are told.

Yes the Nazis did terrible things to the jews and you know what that just crept up on society bit by bit. Good people were concerned but too frightened to speak or take action. Now if feels like our own british citizens are being boiled like frogs except now the water is getting really hot despite us having years to get used to the decline.

If restore is what we need to vote for then bring it on. Or reform but I feel more in line with restore's policies having read them.

I am glad the german citizens are making a stand against problems in their own country. I hope we have the balls (or opportunity) to do the same.

I applaud the men who tried to take a stand last night.
I looked at the small line of police officers (who all seemed about twelve, small, skinny and not too convinced that they were on the right side) and for a brief moment I had a fantasy of them turning and joining our brave citizens and telling the young black men to get back in the water and fuck off. No, no, no. That wouldn't be 'nice'. That wouldn't be 'fair'. That wouldn't be 'tolerant'

Good on Germany for making a stand. Good on our men for trying to make a stand.

Your sincerely
White, middle aged, uni educated, retired woman.

You mention race a lot in your post. Why do you keep mentioning the melanin levels of your neighbours? Why does it matter?

deuxbleublanc · Today 11:36

The election results in Saxony Anhalt is not exactly shocking (though sobering and saddening), it has been a long time coming.

To those who are not familiar with the wider context, Saxony Anhalt is in East Germany, which was a communist state from 1949 to 1990. There must have some positives for people living in the German Democratic Republic but it was a completely totalitarian regime, you had to live by party rule. This was a society where neighbours spied on each other and parents reported and betrayed their own children for trying to flee to the West / being an enemy of the state. People ended up in prison for decades or killed just for having a difference in opinion and not being good communists. Remember they went seamlessly from one extreme and inhumane regime (Nazis) to another (Communists) and the families who lived through and participated in decades of totalitarian politics went on to raise the generations that followed and that are now voting.

Not everyone from Eastern Germany was happy about reunification and unfortunately and eastern Germany has always had problems with xenophobia since the wall came down. While AfD is unfortunately getting more popular in other areas in Germany too it's worthwhile knowing that this vote happened in a particular social and political context.

And yet thousands of people clamour to come here every year, risking life and limb. Don't they know how awful Britain is?

Maybe the government should project onto the white cliffs of Dover: 'Britain is racist and awful - stay away.'

Britain can be racist and still have people moving here. Loads of people moved to the USA during its Jim Crow years.

It’s the usual insult from the left in each of your posts so far. You won’t see all the same views, go to BlueSky if that’s wanted instead.

Why do you keep avoiding the question.

It’s really not a difficult one.

Why were you not at the protests on the weekend?

If you think these men did the right thing and you whole heartedly agree with their stance and the way they handled things - why were you not by their sides supporting them?

The truth is you will not go to one of these protests because you would not feel safe (and I don’t blame you).

Women do not go to these protests because these men are dangerous and you would fear that you would be sexually assaulted, raped or simply attacked.

These men do not care about women and children and the proof is in the pudding because there are never (or hardly any) women present.

Too much immigration is an important topic that needs addressing.
But we do not need aggressive, violent, women-hating far right men doing it for us.

5MinuteArgument · Today 11:40

echt · Today 11:03

Oh dear.

There's no arguing with that. It's so very wrong in every way.

The words Pakistani, Indian, Middle Eastern and African simply mean British and always have done for millennia, since time began.

Are you on glue? Do you have any concept of history? Or even time?

I think the poster is being ironic maybe?

Hard to tell because I know plenty of people with this mindset. They think Britain has no culture of its own, it's only an amalgam of other cultures which of course are enormously rich and diverse.

And Britain (England in particular), having no culture of its own, apart from a few things that are boring and naff, should be grateful to these other cultures for bringing to us their rich diversity.

It was a quick edit to acknowledge that he is British. And definitely not Pakistani. 😉

ETA (I'll try to be more intelligent this time) I am uncomfortable with his videos complaining about the nature of church conversions and, as I said, we do not insist that people standing for Parliament have to be born here. Maybe, he would enjoy the US more with his opinions, oh wait a minute ....

I do not think that the UK is a racist country. I think that liberals lack bigger picture / critical thinking skills (the woman from the Green Party in question time who was astounded that open borders might lead to issues with housing).

The women of Iran and Afghanistan didn’t willingly lose all of their rights overnight. They went with a party with seemingly liberal views and gradually were taken over by a culture that is harmful to women. The suicide stats in Afghanistan are mostly women, bucking the trend of the rest of the world.

The issue is the woolly open borders / one world thinking is leading us down the same path. It takes radical people to scream and shout to make people sit up and take notice. I wish we could round table it and come up with workable fair solutions but we in this country are so ashamed of our past and being called racist that we do not look after our own interests and put everyone else above ourselves.

The most deprived people in this country are young white men, who get told of their privilege whilst sitting in their parents council house, the third generation not to work.

The world has gone mad and it’s going to take a massive overcorrection to put it back on course.

Rape of adolescents has been all but legalised if you are from one demographic and if that doesn’t make you want to take to the streets, I do not care about anything else you think or say.

I’m with Kemi, these cultures are incompatible of our way of life and I for one am not willing to sacrifice a generation of young girls whilst they learn that rape is not okay.

If anyone thinks that this is racist… I’m not sure what to say.

Do you feel it helps you to be mystified by those that think differently from you? Have you heard of trying to see the others point of view? Or do you only see the point of view of people with non white skin?

Who’s mystified? I have seen many, many comments saying they don’t like Sadiq Khan because he is a Muslim, usually on Reform supporting pages/posts but wan’t Laila to be the Mayor although she is also Muslim. Of course if they dislike him for other reasons, rather than just because he is a Muslim fair do’s!

Im more than happy to listen to views that differ from mine, regardless of skin colour, don’t you agree?

Goatsarebest · Today 11:44

Stairlifter · Today 11:26

I presume you would object to being labelled racist, but I think your post contained the words 'black' and 'brown' seven times. There is also a fantasy expressed about telling some black men to fuck off.

I can't see into your head so I don't know your true intent. But if I were to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you weren't an out and out racist, I would appeal to you to try and express yourself in a way which didn't terrify non-white people who may be your friends, neighbours or other good citizens of our country.

This post sums it up for me. The original post was expressing genuine concerns about how she and others felt because of the change on the demographs of her community. Maybe not how all of us would express it, but they are her words. The context was set about the poster being a law abiding middle aged educated women who worked and participated in her community all her life but is now drawn to a position she never had before. A brave post in the context of the current debate. These are very pertinent facts for this debate, which is why the 'far right' is gaining support.

But the response is to highlight how many times she said Black and Brown, imply she is a racist and tell her how to express herself. Wrapped up with a bit of virtue signalling and patting on the head from the responder.
No attempt to try and understand her position or even give to rationale debate. Just labelling. Polite labelling, I'll give them that.
Then the 'spreading fear' bit.
Maybe, just maybe, there is genuine fear in some communities and it doesn't need 'spreading'.
This wasn't a rabid ideological response, but it shows the embedded nature of where we are right now. You are wrong if you don't agree with me.d
Entrenched and divisive positions are far more dangerous to our society than an election in Germany.

KeepItDownWillYou · Today 11:45

Maybe instead of calling people far right and trying to silence them, when they are rightly concerned about the state of this country, we should be addressing these issues.
I find it alarming that the police were just waiting on the shores with tents, clothing and supplies rather than preventing these boats from coming here in the first place. It suggests there is more to this and we really should be concerned.
If you look at the statistics for violent crimes they are on the rise and most have been committed by people coming here illegally.
Yet the government continues to blame people protesting those coming here illegally and label them as thugs and the illegals as victims? Why is that?

KeepItDownWillYou · Today 11:45

Oops posted twice, but may as well mention the Henry nowak case.. Have we really gotten to the point where political correctness is treating the victims as the perpetrator?
Not comparing that to the Portsmouth incident yesterday, but it's something to think about, not to mention the pitiful sentences for rapes where victims have been afraid to come forward as they are basically accused of being racist.
