Rise of far right

Sillyme1 · Today 07:00

Any one else worried about the rise of the far right in Europe. Churchill once said ‘those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it’. Obviously social conditions are different from the 1930s, but there are similarities such as using immigrants as scapegoats (not Jews this time). Things can so easily escalate and I admit to being worried

Nah. And I consider myself very much a centrist.

If you were a centrist, you wouldn't be objecting to an increasingly right wing audience.

Marellain · Today 11:03

I’m nervous that what is histrionically dubbed ‘ far right’ won’t get control soon enough And that disastrous consequences will escalate on a civil level.

someone up thread used the word ‘ baffled’ as to why immigration has been allowed to continue so unchecked. The bafflement becomes suspicion and fear and mistrust that the government has the country’s best interests at heart.

then, à cute little pm arrives, tells us he plays the guitar, likes dj-ing, and talks about bus tickets.

Not what we need.

There's no native population in Britain. Anyone from anywhere in the world is British, there's millions of unborn people in every country in the world that are British, British just means person from anywhere. The other 199 countries all have their own people but not Britain, it has always been populated by the entire planet and there are no native people at all, it's always been a Pakistani, Indian, Romanian, African and Arab country. The words Pakistani, Indian, Middle Eastern and African simply mean British and always have done for millennia, since time began. Native people have never lived here, it's always been the case that the majority of babies born here were from other countries, in fact the United Kingdom isn't actually a country at all, it's simply a suburb of Pakistan India Africa and the middle east. The word country doesn't apply to Britain, only the rest of the world's countries.

Oh dear.

There's no arguing with that. It's so very wrong in every way.

The words Pakistani, Indian, Middle Eastern and African simply mean British and always have done for millennia, since time began.

Are you on glue? Do you have any concept of history? Or even time?

I don’t know which way Mumsnet leans generally but I think it just reflects society. There has always been a far right and fairly racist component in MN (as opposed to merely anti-immigrant). But I think that’s just society too.

The racist component has been more noticeable across all the threads recently. The advice given to posters in AIBU etc once it's ascertained that they're people of colour/in relationships with people of colour is often basically pretty racist.

The politics threads are just a sea of people/bots agreeing that Britain is being invaded by an army of fighting age rapists but you can't say that out loud because Andy Burnham's Thought Police will instantly transport you to the gulags.

The Jews were demonised then. Now it's muslims and immigrants.

By end of last year, Jews were targeted at 8.8 times the rate of Muslims, per head (hate crime stats, gov.uk). Don’t say ignorant things or downplay antisemitism, it’s catching.

Firstly, people need to stop describing people who have concerns about immigration as ‘far right’. They’re really not. Hitler was far right, so it’s silly to be shrieking ‘far right’ at everyone who has concerns. We don’t want, nor do we need, immigration of unskilled young single men, who are not going to fill NHS roles, or contribute anything to our society, other than creating problems with demand on our public services, to which most of them won’t be paying into. If the government listen to the masses on this subject, there would be no place for Reform. But Burnham is just dismissing concerns, as he has stated publicly that immigration is not a priority. Apparently his priorities are giving everyone free bus travel and saving us all £4 a month on our utility bills. He thinks the hundreds demonstrating this week is irrelevant - low numbers. But he doesn’t seem to realise that there are millions of us not demonstrating on the streets, who agree with the protestors sentiment on immigration, and who will be voting instead at the next GE for a Reform government. Thats the reality unless he starts doing something about it, and not taking us for fools by fiddling figures.

These things escalate and I think we have seen enough recently to tell us what a Reform gov't would look like. These ppl just want to make money and they want to control the masses and install themselves as the overlords. . If you think these guys have any real concern for British people, then you must have come down in the last rain shower. I do take your point that immigration needs to be controlled, but Reform or Restore are not the answer. Nigel Farage and his cronies have absolutely no interest in helping working people whatsoever. It's a con. They are only interested in billionaires and millionaires.

The accepted definition of "far right extremism" (to quote you verbatim) is, and has always been, groups that advocate violence/societal overthrow

Accepted by whom? "is and always has been";* *how on earth do you know what has 'always been accepted'

Just Google far right extremism and you'll get a different answer, both from AI and from other sources, such as the gov.uk site.

It's such a straw man argument to put words in somebody's mouth and then argue against an argument that was never put forward

We have terms that are universally used in an accepted sense.
Most of us recognise the term "extremism" as meaning to prescribe to forceful imposition of views.
The majority of people won't require google in order to understand what is meant by extremism.

LiuBei · Today 11:07

HermioneWeasley · Today 07:07

Yes, but the comparison is not the same

there is and never had been any problems caused by Jewish people. I think there is a legitimate conversation to have about immigration, and successive governments’ complete inability to assess those issues or even permit conversation about it has given oxygen to right wing parties.

Britain is a very centrist and tolerant country but also has a strong sense of fairness. The state of the Uk at the moment doesn’t feel fair. 2 years ago the population voted to get rid of the conservatives because they were failing. They didnt actually swing to the left and choose Labour, it was just a rejection of the failing party in power.

the situation is recoverable but will take some tough choices. Labour have shown they’re not prepared to do that - the mildest of welfare reform was utterly rejected by the party.

I think this is spot on. Jews attracted hatred for being successful (and not in a way that hurt others). They didnt disproportionately commit crimes. They didnt receive disproportionate largesse from the state.

In 2026 we have a political movement that hates people who are successful, who contribute disproportionately to the country. It's not the far right.

This is why I don't get the whole Zia Yusuf thing. As if Reform's key demographic wouldn't have him on the first plane to Pakistan if they could. And yet he's their biggest public cheerleader!

Yes, and leading the complaining that the Labour candidate in Holborn is Somali British? It is very bizarre ......

ETA I think Yusuf is of Sri Lankan heritage via his parents.

The reality is the government needed workers and to keep wages low post brexit and covid, so they increased immigration and were lax on enforcement.

And instead of being truthful and telling people that this country survives because of an insecure low paid underclass. they equivocate.

When the majority was eastern europeans, the behaviour was exactly the same. everyone is acting like it was different it wasn't. the fear of the other and fighting for resources continues.

HRTQueen · Today 11:10

Of course it is worrying while history often repeats itself it can take different forms of how it plays out

Governments have created this mess, we will always have a fraction of right wing supporters (in every country, and actually less so in the UK than many areas of Europe, that doesn't mean we do not have racist people but we tend to stay centre ground when it comes to politics other countries often move further to the left and right than we do).

With growth of the gap between rich and those with less (as it is not just the poor we are talking about now) with the rise in immigration particularly high numbers of young men coming into Europe, the lack of investment in local areas (this is very much an issues in the UK form the 80's onwards but not just a UK issue) the idea behind much of Europe economics in the past 30 years, expanding rapidly low wage growth high (not an issues when you have a high number of immigrants) income growth for business and government. The writing has been on the wall for a number of years, and now to top that off European countries are not working together to deal with the immigration issue

People feel as though the governments have lost control over the issues around refugees and illegal immigration and given how many times we are told numbers people so often just have no faith now (and that is for a various concerns around out politicians) because the numbers are simply unknown

Goatsarebest · Today 11:10

How to deal with 'far right' extremism in 3 easy steps

  1. Stop economic migration whilst we just don't have the resources to support it. See the model of everyone's utopian liberal society that does everything right, our friends in Denmark. Who have the most punitive migration system in Western Europe but still manage to be a beacon of a liberal and equal society with proper social protection (so people think, anyway).
  2. Invest in our education system so we don't have swathes of 'uneducated white men' in Clackton or similar. Stop using the education system to enforce ideology and get back to basics, to quote someone. Make universities accountable to their ideological group think that is cloning this into our institutions through their graduates.
  3. Create a proper functioning criminal just system that recognises the value of early interventions but also its function to protect public safety and to punish and deter wrong doing. This should be extended particularly to those abusing power to enrich themselves and their friends and any racists or hate actions. But not to close down opinion or speech.

Do this and the 'far right' will melt away to a rump of racists and deviants. We can deal and marginalise them, as we always have before. See National Front etc.

If we are looking for a 4th step then my own personal preference would be to real in NGOs and their relentless ideological captures and influence, without proper accountability.
That's it, really. But that's alot of powerful vested interests to fight.

The fact that he is of Sri Lankan heritage makes it no less likely that the knuckle draggers will want to send him back to Pakistan. Anyone born east of Norwich came from there in their book.

The population has changed a lot over the last forty to fifty years. And many British people have immigrated. I personally know people living in the US, Australia, Thailand, Iceland and Germany. All British people. We are all much more mobile now.

She's claiming we have always been as mobile as we have in the oil century.

The low wage issues started long before Brexit

this really goes back to 2008 with the financial crash, its increased since Brexit but low wage growth was a significant factor in people losing faith in our politicians

CouldICopeWithAnotherPuppy · Today 11:13

No. I am however worried about remaining in this dire state of where we currently are.

I live in Scotland. Not in a big city. Chatting to hairdresser last week. She lives in a small village. Her local shop has black/brown men hanging about outside. She admits to feeling intimidated. On entering the shop they are playing prayer music. This is an ex mining village which is now being used it seems for these men coming across here.

I live in a bigger town about ten miles away and in recent weeks have noticed an increase in the numbers of young black men usually on their own talking loudly on their phones in a foreign language. A trip to the local park with the dog had me experiencing a surreal out of body feeling as everywhere I looked there was black/brown people. I live somewhere that traditionally would have almost none.
I actually started to feel like I was the only white person there.

The hairdresser told me two of her other customers that morning had both said similar things. They lived in different places to her and I but all within a non city part of Scotland. Her clients are mostly my age and older. So I'm white, in my fifties and retired from a professional job. She has lots of middle aged and older ladies as clients. Yes we are all noticing and we are all feeling frightened and angry.

I can't get a GP appointment because the NHS is falling apart (lets not kid ourselves).
Our young people can't get jobs. Our finances are dire. We have another short term PM (again lets not kid ourselves)

I feel utterly outraged at what is happening to this country and how we have no control it seems over our borders. I was reading about the protests last night and was firmly on the side on the men who were at least trying to show how lots of us feel. Of course that does not matter what we want. The police just 'did their jobs' and chased away the concerned citizens and welcomed the black, young men (not doubt with no skills) into our failing economy country.

I've never broken a law in my life. I did a very boring job after uni. I can actually see myself going on a protest soon for the first time in my life.

We need a restore government. Wanting to put your own citizens first is not 'far right'. It's just sensible. If we didn't have such a reputation for 'fairness' which lets be honest is now being touted round the world as complete bloody mugs with no ability to stand up for themselves.

If the IMF bail us out (which it seems they couldn't afford to do anyway) I hope at least an upside is the 'asylum seekers' (aye right!!) will stop coming.

Like the vast majority of people I have no issue with real asylum seekers applying to the UK for help. That is not what is going on here.

So what happens when our already shrinking police force can no longer control the amount of young black men they have let in here. We already know the police is struggling. Criminals are getting out of prison early. Frontline officers are already scarce and are leaving in droves due to the stress (source friend who is front line police officer). Should we just sit and wait until our country is actually being taken over by immigrants and we all just have to do what we are told.

Yes the Nazis did terrible things to the jews and you know what that just crept up on society bit by bit. Good people were concerned but too frightened to speak or take action. Now if feels like our own british citizens are being boiled like frogs except now the water is getting really hot despite us having years to get used to the decline.

If restore is what we need to vote for then bring it on. Or reform but I feel more in line with restore's policies having read them.

I am glad the german citizens are making a stand against problems in their own country. I hope we have the balls (or opportunity) to do the same.

I applaud the men who tried to take a stand last night.
I looked at the small line of police officers (who all seemed about twelve, small, skinny and not too convinced that they were on the right side) and for a brief moment I had a fantasy of them turning and joining our brave citizens and telling the young black men to get back in the water and fuck off. No, no, no. That wouldn't be 'nice'. That wouldn't be 'fair'. That wouldn't be 'tolerant'

Good on Germany for making a stand. Good on our men for trying to make a stand.

Your sincerely
White, middle aged, uni educated, retired woman.

What about all those “fighting age” men in Portsmouth last night?

My local refugee centres are full of women and children. Yes there are loads of problems. They are traumatised and some are clearly trafficked and will disappear.

I suspect that a lot of people’s anxieties are caused by the massive influx of families from non EU countries taking low paid carers jobs and similar because our fellow patriots won’t do jobs that actually require them to look after their elders, which is weird because I’m sure it would really speak to their Christian values eh?

What about them?
Even IF they are thugs, which I doubt - which seems to be what you are implying - we don't need any more entering the country do we? We've got enough of our to deal with.

As for the women and children? Well they don't pose a threat. I'll say that.

My anxieties are not fuelled by Christian values at all as I'm an atheist.
Or indeed anything else your passive aggressive words suggest.

More about not having hordes of uncivilised men who it has to be explained to that rape isn't their right.
Explained to them. Ffs.

F*ing hell. I am continually amazed by women who advocate for these men to be allowed in.
It shouldn't surprise me but it does.

Haven't we got enough of our own bad men -to deal with without importing more?
