Does removing the coil hurt?

I had it put in under general anaesthetic and hear conflicting theories on removal . I want mine taken out but im scared!

I’ve had one fall out by itself. Mild cramping was all. I believe it can be painful but it should also be quick so I’d go for it if I were you.

Not even slightly. I’ve taken one out myself. They collapse on themselves when pulled so it’s a smooth exit and takes a second or two.

Mine (mirena) came out very easily… took the dr seconds. I didn’t feel a thing.

If you find smears uncomfortable then this might also be, but it is quick. Discuss it with whoever is removing it, when you go to book and they will give you something to help. We shouldn't have to have anything internal done without pain relief.

Wow thanks all! You hear some hideous horror stories so this is reassuring. I knew they wouldn't give general anaesthetic for removals but heard you can have local, sounds like overkill for me personally.

Yes I found it painful I won't lie, but it was a quick pain, just some mild cramping afterwards. I guess everyone is different.

Everyone is different, every practitioner is different. if can be unnoticeable or hurt like fuck.

Just curious but were you getting something else done? A general anaesthetic sounds full on for a coil fitting. I’m not being critical just curious!

I will only have them fitted under GA but have had it removed at the GP and it was painless.

Mine kinda worked loose and I pulled it out myself, no pain at all. Saved me having to make an appointment.

To offer a slightly different view of things not always going well - my dr wasn't able to get mine out. She spent ages trying and was really apologetic, but imagine a 25 minute pap smear (still not painful, but over time definitely becoming uncomfortable). Her surgeon colleague got it out without too much fuss.

I found it very painful sorry, I could have done with gas and air.

My uterus went into spasm when they removed mine which sent me into a sick faint . I had to lie ages sipping lucozade until it all abated. Not very nice

I did find it quite painful, more painful than the insertion, but it was fleeting pain (I’d say less than 10 seconds) followed by some light cramping for a few hours. Nothing some paracetamol and ibuprofen (and a large glass of wine) couldn’t fix!

I had mine in well over the recommended time and put removal off as was worried about pain. I didn’t even feel it!

I am on my second one and it was nothing each time. Slightly uncomfortable, that’s it, probably . I do only focus on the objective though.

Depends if it’s embedded. I’ve been waiting a few years on the NHS to have it out. A gynae tried but it was embedded. The pain was horrendous and I went into shock (my heart rate fell to about 20). Ever since then, I am in permanent pain. I’m now on the waiting list for general anaesthetic removal. God knows how long that will take.

Had mine removed and didn’t feel it.

I was dreading it too, had it done about 6 weeks ago and it was fine, didn’t get another fitted that time which can pinch a bit
