AIBU to think the new sixth form outfit looks like something from "The Handmaid'sTale"

I am surprised the school did not add a cloak and a "chastity bonnet"

No rolling that skirt!

NoEligibilityRequirementsApply · 03/09/2026 08:59

I quite like it! But not sure a long skirt is terribly practical tbh.

HRHCurmudgeon · 03/09/2026 09:00

I’d refuse to go to school.

No rolling that skirt!

Can you image!! 😂😂😂

Doowoddy · 03/09/2026 09:00

Surely no teenage girl will wear that!

comeoncolleen · 03/09/2026 09:01

It's stylish and unrollable but may result in sixth formers refusing to go to school.

TheGardenPond · 03/09/2026 09:02

That might be the option for Muslim girls? Our school had different versions for different cultural choices.

NoEligibilityRequirementsApply · 03/09/2026 09:02

I adore these uniforms....

But no, the uniform in the OP- quite late Edwardian and I like it aesthetically, but imagine trying to go up and down stairs. And how heavy it would be.

It reminds me of The Worst Witch!

grumpygrape · 03/09/2026 09:02

Looks like a wrap over too, a bit of a breeze and she'll show her knickers and then take off.
It's rather Mary Poppins isn't it?

Stumblingalongthroughlife · 03/09/2026 09:03

Presumably there is a trouser option though if you don't like the skirt. If you're in an area with large populations who dress modestly for religious reasons (orthodox Jews, Muslims) I can see why this was brought in.

Washingforweeks · 03/09/2026 09:04

I prefer this than the 6form option down the road- never seen skirts so short I don’t know how they dare walk 🤣

purpleme12 · 03/09/2026 09:04

Muslims just wear trousers here for school

MargaretMeldrew · 03/09/2026 09:05

I don’t immediately think ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. It almost has an Edwardian kind of look. It seems rather impractical and performatively modest.

Doowoddy · 03/09/2026 09:07

The poor mannequin posing it's heart out to try and cheer it up...

maggisimpson · 03/09/2026 09:08

Just looks like a long skirt to me 🤔my 6th form also had the choice of knee length or ankle length skirts (obviously we all wore them thigh length 😂)

EmeraldShamrock000 · 03/09/2026 09:08

I doubt that there is a trousers option to this outdated excuse for a school uniform.
It definitely gave me handmaid vibes.

NerrSnerr · 03/09/2026 09:08

Do they get the option of trousers? There’s no way my daughter would wear that skirt in a million years.

I remember my sixth form days where we all wore our own clothes.

SlipperyLizard · 03/09/2026 09:09

When I was in sixth form we petitioned the head to be allowed to wear trousers and/or ankle length skirts (prob weren’t thinking quite this!), male head refused (even female teachers weren’t permitted to wear trousers!).

OtterlyAstounding · 03/09/2026 09:09

I think it looks fine, but I hope there's a trouser option - if not, then I'd be annoyed.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 03/09/2026 09:10

That must be one option from several that would be acceptable. I think it's very old-fashioned rather than overtly oppressive, so I'm not getting Handmaid's Tale vibes from it - I'm imagining girls riding their bikes side-saddle 😄

dustabsorber · 03/09/2026 09:11

Looks like something a suffragette would have worn.

BlueDillieDillie · 03/09/2026 09:12

Reminds me of pictures of women in men's jobs in WW!. Railway booking clerk or similar. They would have had 2 or 3 buttons I think.

IAmInTheHouseSidney · 03/09/2026 09:12

Sorry, why is long skirt Handmaid's tales stuff? I like long skirts/dresses😳 it could be bit more stylish yeah... I am assuming it's one of few options

Sartre · 03/09/2026 09:13

It’s weird some sixth forms insist on uniform when colleges don’t. Surely a horrible uniform like that will drive girls out of the sixth form and into the freedom of college.
