AIBU to think the new sixth form outfit looks like something from "The Handmaid'sTale"

I am surprised the school did not add a cloak and a "chastity bonnet"

Is the 6th form in Green Gables?

dustabsorber · 03/09/2026 09:14

One of my local schools has "business attire" for sixth formers. But that's PJs now, isn't it?

Frumpitydoo · 03/09/2026 09:14

It's fannyflaps ahoy at some of our local schools, so this looks infinitely preferable.

OfficiallyOnVacation · 03/09/2026 09:15

That’s hideous. Imagine if you’re a big lass with a huge behind, that outfit is going to make you look massive!

That might be the option for Muslim girls? Our school had different versions for different cultural choices.

Its the version for everyone I checked

Marlborough College (very posh expensive private school) wear something similar for their sixth form.

My daughter's sixth forms (different schools) were non uniform, not many near me have a uniform.

HeboreoMaltian · 03/09/2026 09:19

Awful. Part of the creeping normalisation of 'modesty' for women 😡

dolwop · 03/09/2026 09:20

The long skirt with the tie and blazer just looks odd, sort of Mary poppins vibes. I’d find all that material a sensory nightmare too.

TemperanceWest · 03/09/2026 09:20

I am guessing this is only one option. Which school is it, OP.

It has Dark Academia vibes!

friedaklein · 03/09/2026 09:20

Why is the skirt so fucking long?

oviraptor21 · 03/09/2026 09:21

Better than what most of the girls around here wear which is wholly unsuitable for the "office wear" look which most sixth forms ask for.

Ours has 'business attire'.

I can tell you that the 6th formers look a very great deal more respectable than any business I have worked in (incouding a solicitor's office).

Only problem is that the boys cannot have a flashy lining to their suit jackets. Sadly that ruled out alot of the glorious satin linings we saw when shopping. (Navy blue jacket with a fuschia peacock feather pattern was my favourite).

ZippyPeer · 03/09/2026 09:21

Looks so heavy! Imagine what it'll be like when it gets rained on!

stillavid · 03/09/2026 09:22

My DD wears a very similar skirt but they choose their own jackets. The girls love the long skirts.

MimiGC · 03/09/2026 09:22

Ghastly and unnecessary.
Is it common for 6th forms to have uniform? They don’t where we are and didn’t when I was at school either.

I got sent home from school in year 11 (then called year 5) for my skirt being too LONG in 1988 (goth).I'd have loved this.

And a bum grazer skirt isn't?

Better than the prevalent "let's see how much we can show and get away with"?

friedaklein · 03/09/2026 09:24

Surely there is middle ground between bum grazers and Edwardian lady.

MissyB1 · 03/09/2026 09:25

Very normal for the 6th forms in our town. My ds 6th form has basically that uniform for the girls or they can wear trousers and blazer. The boys wear smart suits sirt and tie.

Seeline · 03/09/2026 09:26

I used to cycle to school every day - not sure that outfit would work. And it would have been horrible in the rain!

joanjett · 03/09/2026 09:27

Stumblingalongthroughlife · 03/09/2026 09:03

Presumably there is a trouser option though if you don't like the skirt. If you're in an area with large populations who dress modestly for religious reasons (orthodox Jews, Muslims) I can see why this was brought in.

Its a private school with little to no muslim school population.
No trouser option
its this Amish outfit only

Don’t know about the Handmaids Tale but as some one who is just over five foot, I’m exceptionally glad that wasn’t MY sixth form uniform.

I’d be all skirt….
