I found out my wife and my best friend had a physical relationship before we got married, I don't know how to react

I genuinely don't know what to write or how I'm supposed to react to this.

My wife and I are both in our mid 40s. My best friend is also the same age. He has been my best friend since childhood. He's the godfather to our children, and my wife and I are godparents to his children.

For a bit more context, my wife and he are also very close friends. They actually knew each other before I knew either of them, and they've always had a very good friendship

Our families are extremely close. We normally see each other every week for breakfast or a BBQ in one of our gardens. We go on family trips together, celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and our children are all teenagers and are basically like cousins.

My wife and I have a genuinely good marriage. We've been together for decades, we love each other, we're financially comfortable, and as far as I knew there was absolutely nothing wrong between us.

Then on Friday night, my best friend told me he needed to confess something that had happened a very long time ago.

He told me that when we were 18, during a six month breakup between me and my now wife, he and my wife had a sexual relationship for around 2–3 months.

I honestly felt physically sick when he told me.

I didn't know how to react. I cried. He just stood there and kept telling me that it ended years ago, that nothing had happened since, and that I shouldn't be angry with my wife because we weren't together at the time.

I got angry with him and told him I didn't want him to contact me again. Then I went home.

For context, yes, I broke up with my wife when we were 18. I was an idiot teenager and I broke her heart. That's on me. We were apart for about six months, then eventually got back together. We've been solid ever since.

In all those years, I've never had a reason to believe she was cheating on me. Not once.

Yesterday, I told my wife what he'd confessed. At first she said she had kept it from me because she didn't want to lose me. She apologised for hiding it.

She confirmed that they had been together for around three months while we were broken up. She said they eventually stopped because they realised remaining friends was better for them, and then around three months later, she and I got back together.

But then she also told me that technically it was none of my business who she slept with while we were broken up. It was her body and she was single. If this had been some random person she slept with during those six months, I probably wouldn't care now.

But it wasn't some random person. It was my best friend. The man who stood beside me as my best man at our wedding. I've trusted for most of my life. I've allowed into my home every week. That man who is godfather to my children.

And they've both known about this for 26 years while I had absolutely no idea. That's the part I can't get past. I keep thinking about every BBQ, every family holiday, every time the four of us have sat together talking, and wondering whether they were both looking at each other and remembering something I didn't know. My wife keeps saying that nothing happened during our relationship and that she has loved me all these years. And honestly, I believe her But something has changed in my head. I can't look at my friend the same way anymore. I can't even look at their friendship the same way.

Part of me wants to completely cut him and his family out of our lives. No more breakfasts, no more BBQs, no more holidays together. I don't want my children caught in the middle, but at the same time I don't know how I'm supposed to carry on having him around as if nothing happened.

And then there's my wife. I know technically she didn't cheat on me. We were broken up.
But she deliberately kept this from me for 26 years, and so did he. I'm struggling with the fact that two of the people I trusted most in the world knew something incredibly significant about my own life that I didn't know. I don't know whether I'm overreacting because it happened so long ago, or whether the fact that it was my best friend and was deliberately kept secret makes this completely different.

But right now I feel hurt, betrayed, embarrassed and honestly a bit stupid and Jealousy so much

That would shock me too.
I hope you're okay. 🫂

Why did he feel the need to suddenly get it off his chest?

RosasDanceRosas · Today 09:20

I think I’d be more intrigued as to why your friend suddenly told you now, all these years on? That’s much odder and more striking than a brief teenage fling several decades ago. I’m still good friends with people I had brief relationships with in my student days (when I also got together with DH, who is friends with them too) and they literally never cross my mind. It’s certainly not ‘incredibly significant’ to my mind.

VenusThighTrap · Today 09:20

You’re overreacting. They were teenagers. You weren’t together. You said you acted like an idiot at the time and broke her heart - she’s obviously forgiven you for that. You need to also leave this in the past.

Justaquestionplease · Today 09:21

What a load of drama over nothing. You're all in your forties and this happened when you were teens..honestly! Who knew you'd have ended up married. He shouldn't have told you in the first place

Phoenix1Arisen · Today 09:22

Did you stay chaste and virginal during this 6 month break?

Newbutoldfather · Today 09:24

I think it’s the secrecy, not the sex, that is the issue.

They should have both told you about it when you got back together. Or kept quiet about it forever.

BleedinglyObvious · Today 09:24

Why is he telling you now?
YANBU to mind but you weren't together at the time.

Zanatdy · Today 09:25

To be honest, i’m not sure why on earth he told you, as you can’t go back now and it makes things awkward. But your now wife did not cheat on you, you’d ended things with her and she was single. Not great your best friend jumped straight in, but it’s a long way from cheating on you. I guess that’s why he has told you now, guilt.

Traitorsclaudia · Today 09:26

I'd wonder why you're being told now.

DancingNotDrowning · Today 09:26

It’s a shocking revelation but no one has done anything wrong.

your wife didn’t “technically not cheat”, she didn’t cheat at all. You dumped her. Presumably because you thought the grass was greener?

when she had a relationship with your friend she had no idea that you’d get back together.

you are entitled to feel shocked you weren’t told - and truthfully I’d feel the same- but she is entitled not to discuss past sexual relationships with you.

I'd wonder why you're being told now.

This is my first thoyght
It was many years ago it lasted mere weeks
Why on earth bring it up now🤔

Walkerzoo · Today 09:27

Not sure why he told you now. But you were on a break

I would be focusing on the positive. If you had found out then you maybe would have put jealousy over both relationships and missed out on a fab marriage and friendship.

But I would find out why now...

Happyjoe · Today 09:29

Yeah, I realise it hurts but I also think it shouldn't hurt as much as you're letting it.
Your wife didn't cheat on you, as you wrote. They were young. They didn't 'keep a secret', this was their history, not yours.. there's nothing in a relationship that means anyone has to tell you everything, especially sexual past. It has no relevance for today.

They were friends and would've cared for each other but if they were meant to be together, it wouldn't have lasted only 2-3 months and you and your wife wouldn't have got back together for a long and happy marriage. That's the bit to think about, you and your wife have been happy. You and your friend have been happy. Their actions over the last couple of decades are what you listen to, not 2-3 months of something you don't like, a very long time ago.

Don't let the past destroy what you have.

MagpiePi · Today 09:29

I'm struggling with the fact that two of the people I trusted most in the world knew something incredibly significant about my own life that I didn't know.

Their relationship wasn’t about ‘your life’. You broke up with her and broke her heart, she had a relationship with a friend and yet you think she cheated on you?

You don’t own her. Get over yourself 🙄

walrushurricane · Today 09:30

I think you have got a real nerve to be annoyed with your wife. You broke up with her so why shouldn't she sleep with who she wants. Your friend was obviously not being a particularly good friend but it's not as if she broke up with you and you were heartbroken. And you were only 18 ffs. Grow up.

MyballsareSandy2015 · Today 09:33

Odd to tell you after all these years.

I believe there should be no secrets in a marriage. It wasn’t some random guy it was my best friend, and that person is still in our lives. I had never known the full context of their relationship.

At least for me, it changes a lot from now on

SunnyRedSnail · Today 09:33

Are you for real? You come across as a bit of a psycho. Cheating on you?!?! The fact you are blowing this SO out of proportion is no doubt exactly why it was never mentioned.

She was single. You dumped her. He was single. They hooked up. End of story.

You need to get over it. Everyone has history.

Imo it's a lot of drama over nothing.

Noone cheated, you just now know something you didn't.

Look on it optimistically: everyone has done their best to avoid hurt, whether that's keeping quiet or coming clean years later.

Accept you're shocked but give it time, your life isn't any different (other than shunning your friend but you can undo that)

I don't disagree at all, but at the time they weren't on a break - they'd actually broken up. As far as she knew, the relationship was over.

She and the best friend obviously decided it wasn't going to work between them so it didn't last.

Teen friendship groups can be a bit incestuous - it's quite common - but after that's all settled some couples go the distance.

Agree about the timing of the revelation - weird. Has he had a diagnosis or something?

Newbutoldfather · Today 09:35

I don’t think people really get this.

Of course she didn’t cheat.

But imagine that your best friend and godmother/father to your children had had a sexual relationship with your husband/wife and neither had bothered to tell you for over quarter of a century.

Would you really think it an irrelevant detail and just shrug when your mate finally decided to tell you. Would it be a ‘was it fun at the time, fancy another coffee’ moment?

conseulabananahammock2 · Today 09:36

People will be awful and unhelpful because you’re a man posting OP. I can see a few already. But I can’t imagine anyone here would be totally fine with finding out their dh and best friend had sex and kept it a secret for over 20 years. It isn’t the fact they slept together when you were all young, it’s the fact they’ve kept it from you all these years. I would be livid and feel very betrayed and humiliated.

Logically you know they didn’t really do anything wrong so I wouldn’t upset your good marriage over it, but I think you probably need to some distance from the friend for a while until you can come to terms with things. Really sorry op this must have been a big shock.

You can believe what you want but she doesn't owe you anything, especially before your latest relationship woth her.

You get to be a silly teenager and she doesn't? Surely you can see rationally that the moment for her to tell you was when you got back together as teens and she didn't so surely that's also a teenage mistake?

mamajong · Today 09:37

I would be distraught too. Taking a big step back though I can see how it happened. You were all 18 - we all.do stupid things then. They didn't tell you, not wanting to rick the friendship or relationship at the time, not knowing you guys would get married and build this future, then having built it why blow it all up over a stupid teenage mistake...

Whats important is why after 26 years your friend has suddenly confessed out of the blue. Is he ill and its a deathbed confession. Did a 3rd party know and threaten to tell you? Does he have feelings for your wife still snd is hoping this will break you up and clear his path? His motivation matters here if you have a hope of recovery
