To ask what happens now my flight has been cancelled?

I was due on a flight that was cancelled tonight and the communication from the airline has been woeful.

Everyone at the airport just shrugged and said it wasn’t their problem, to go through the app and sort it out there.

I did that and I have a new flight tomorrow, and I’m in a hotel. I know things like dinner tonight and food tomorrow can be claimed back, but what about things like the Airbnb I’ve paid for for tonight in my original destination? I’ve messaged the hosts and explained that I won’t be there tonight, so I’m hopeful they’re going to keep the reservation for me, but if they don’t, then what?

How do I claim the compensation due under UK 261? What do I do now?

You claim through your travel insurance.

No, the airline are supposed to pay. Not travel insurance- they’re meant to be responsible for all costs related to the flight cancellation

I had a flight with KLM cancelled earlier this year and claimed through their website. It was very straight forward and quick. I got more money than I expected. I was flying home though, so there was no missed accommodation for me. Make sure you have all invoices and that the hotel invoice clearly shows your name.

MumofCandR · 28/08/2026 22:06

Submit expenses and claim for compensation directly to the airline. We had this with BA a few years ago they paid quickly under regulations and had an online claim form.

I don’t think that’s true.

Tunaboona · 28/08/2026 22:06

Keep every receipt, take photos of them. We sent everything into BA and they covered it all and gave us good compensation for the actual flight cancellation. It ended up working out better for us but was a bit stressful.

No, airline are only reponsible for certain costs in certain circumstances. Your airbnb is not their concern.

Surely it is though as it’s their fault I’ve not made it tonight?

It’s been an absolutely horrible evening. It was easyJet, and I’ve never experienced anything like it! Everyone was looking for help and the staff just kept saying it’s not their problem

Only if you booked it as a package tour, with flights and accommodation paid to the same supplier. Even then, you have to read the small print these days.

Flickitspinittwistitbopit · 28/08/2026 22:10

When this happened to us we got about 3x the flight cost in compensation but were also heading home so no costs were incurred

UserN0tFound · 28/08/2026 22:12

There are limitations on claims via regulations, I believe, which certain 'budget' airlines 110% adhere to. Others may be more forthcoming but have no experience

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 28/08/2026 22:12

I had a flight cancelled in the IT glitch 2 years ago. I ended up travelling by train, coach and train again to get from Dusseldorf airport to Paris CDG for a flight home the same day.

If the cancellation was their fault you should be entitled to a set fee from the airline depending on the distance of the flight. They should cover the cost of your new travel and any extra expenses you incur as a result. Just claim on their website and send pics of your receipts/orders.

@tpwk have a look here, there is also a link to their compensation policy

regardless of that though if they’d had the crew for their flight I’d be in my Airbnb? So surely they have to make it right?

I had a rotten time a couple of years ago. I was travelling for work and was advised there was no point in trying to claim costs (which included about £700 of hotel room, train fare and cab ride to a different airport in a different European country in order to get home.) I was furious and also thought it was ludicrous - happily I speak the languages in both countries so was able to get around but it would have been very difficult for many people I know.

Air travel is awful these days.

They are completely responsible for your expenses up to a certain about unless the cancellation was due to the airline, the only exception would be if it's totally not their fault due to something like weather or a security risk. Details are here.

I don’t think that’s true.

I lost my prepaid transfer and had to pay again when Lufthansa cancelled my flight. They said that they wouldn't pay for a 'consequential loss'.

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/08/2026 22:14

What was the reason given for your flight being cancelled? The reason can affect what you can claim for - as well as the airline / location (i.e. if you are also able to claim additional compensation under EU/UK 261).

You need to check your airline’s policy online for what you can and can’t claim. I suspect your AirBNB for tonight won’t be covered given that the airline is providing you with a hotel. They’re not going to effectively pay twice for one night’s accommodation.

My flight home from Italy was cancelled last Thursday night due to bad weather in the area (so I wasn’t entitled to compensation as weather is out of the airline’s control). The airline / airport were useless at providing any help and I just booked a hotel room via my phone and asked the Italian police to help me get back through security into the country again and out of the airport. No taxis of course so I ended walking in the dark to find my hotel. Could have been very dodgy but I live in east London so I’m pretty streetwise but…

The good news is that you’re already rebooked on a flight tomorrow.

No. They are responsible for getting you to your destination. Your travel insurance covers the rest.

I think they will probably laugh at you. I wouldn’t waste time getting stressed about it. Happy to be proved wrong but doubt you’ll get anything out of them. If you do it’ll be a flat rate compensation, not coverage of your particular costs.

Nope. Your accommodation is not their issue. Unless you booked a package with the airline that included accommodation, they’re not going to essentially pay twice for your accommodation tonight.

cheesecurdsandgravy · 28/08/2026 22:18

Do you have travel insurance?

JoanOgden · 28/08/2026 22:18

I don't think anyone will pay for your AirBnb as that was all booked already. It's the hotel for tonight and additional meals they should pay for, plus compensation if it meets the requirements. MoneySavingExpert is usually helpful for this sort of information.

tpwk · 28/08/2026 22:20

cheesecurdsandgravy · 28/08/2026 22:18

Do you have travel insurance?

Yes but I’d really like to avoid claiming on that as I’d have to pay an excess! The entire issue was basically the easyJet crew was one down. They tried to get in contact with the standby staff member but they weren’t available. Surely that’s something they have to pay out for
