To ask what happens now my flight has been cancelled?

I was due on a flight that was cancelled tonight and the communication from the airline has been woeful.

Everyone at the airport just shrugged and said it wasn’t their problem, to go through the app and sort it out there.

I did that and I have a new flight tomorrow, and I’m in a hotel. I know things like dinner tonight and food tomorrow can be claimed back, but what about things like the Airbnb I’ve paid for for tonight in my original destination? I’ve messaged the hosts and explained that I won’t be there tonight, so I’m hopeful they’re going to keep the reservation for me, but if they don’t, then what?

How do I claim the compensation due under UK 261? What do I do now?

They said at the gate (overheard, not delivered to passengers) that the issue was the standby crew weren’t coming in.

That is fully down to easyJet.

Not if they were delayed leaving their origin due to weather

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 10:11

Jeez! All this fuss over a cheap as chips holiday! If it was an exclusive safari
lodge at £1500 a night I’d have some sympathy but cheap holidays are just that - cheap because they are not scheduled flights and you did your own booking in an Airbnb. It’s not even a hotel.

No one is saying this isn't down to Easyjet.

If it's a whole crew not showing up there is a bit more gone on here than one standby crewmember not arriving.

If that reported conversation is correct and accurate it now sounds like something a bit more fundamental to the operation as a whole has gone on and has forced operations into making a call ... the underlying reason could be anything (including weather in Europe).

What was the reason given for your flight being cancelled? The reason can affect what you can claim for - as well as the airline / location (i.e. if you are also able to claim additional compensation under EU/UK 261).

You need to check your airline’s policy online for what you can and can’t claim. I suspect your AirBNB for tonight won’t be covered given that the airline is providing you with a hotel. They’re not going to effectively pay twice for one night’s accommodation.

My flight home from Italy was cancelled last Thursday night due to bad weather in the area (so I wasn’t entitled to compensation as weather is out of the airline’s control). The airline / airport were useless at providing any help and I just booked a hotel room via my phone and asked the Italian police to help me get back through security into the country again and out of the airport. No taxis of course so I ended walking in the dark to find my hotel. Could have been very dodgy but I live in east London so I’m pretty streetwise but…

The good news is that you’re already rebooked on a flight tomorrow.

This @tpwk

it depends on the reason for the cancellation

we had our flight cancelled due to a volcano in Sicily and were rebooked via Athens, then they delayed that flight so we had the London sector changed to the following day.

we got onto Booking . Com and booked an airport hotel room (at enormous expense)

we got that back, all transport from the wrong arrival airport to where our car was, plus the additional day of parking

@tpwk don’t panic, at the least you’ll get your expenses back, at best you will get compensation

tpwk · Yesterday 09:57

We were given 0 information about compensation or anything. It’s only because my brother worked in the industry that I found out about it.

You have the entire planet’s worth of information in your hand. Google would have told you this within 3 seconds of typing “my flight has been cancelled, what am I entitled to?”

Just because it is cheap for you doors not mean it is cheap for the OP! She has already said she has sanded for a long time for this holiday. It isn’t a great start to any holiday regardless of cost!

OP this is one of those situations where you just have accept it is what it is. Your holiday will start a day late but you will still get to go and hopefully enjoy yourself.

Cheap? It’s nearly three grand all in. Don’t be a bitch.

We had our flight cancelled last night too. They said it was due to bad weather but 3 other flights to the uk managed to leave albeit delayed. We were with tui and it was chaotic and I felt sorry for people with young kids as we were stood with no information outside the airport pretty much all night until they bussed us about 1.5 hours away to put us in accommodation which they had struggled to find in peak season

apoarently the BA flight was cancelled too.

the main irritation is that they must know that flights aren’t going to leave but keep you there showing delayed. Even after we had an email saying they were looking for accommodation they asked us to proceed to the departure gate and go through passport control but then we got there said it was cancelled!

PropertyD · Yesterday 11:40

Take a deep breath here.

This is a low cost airline. They have already put you up in a hotel and provided food etc. As they should do.

What you are missing out on is your first night in your AirbNB. That isn’t their concern. Could you imagine if someone was staying in a Ritz equivalent. I am afraid it’s a insurance job and as you mention an excess it might be that once you have paid the excess it’s just not worth claiming.

I was fairly similar when United sent a smaller plane on their incoming flight to Heathrow. They had to offload 70 people. Anyone who had been accepted to check in online were allowed to fly. The rest of us were told after waiting an hour in a queue that we were booked for the next day, hotel would be provided etc.

I asked very very nicely whether we could fly from any airport/terminal and didn’t need to sit together etc. we had a very snazzy hotel waiting for us in New York.

The agent had been berated by people earlier in the queue and found us a Virgin flight leaving 7 hours later and upgraded us to Premium Economy.

These things happen. I travel a lot with often connecting flights and touch wood it’s fairly unusual for these things to happen.

If your overall cost was £3k then that is some posh Airbnb. Are you travelling alone?

But your one way flight is a tiny proportion of that. You keep insisting that Easyjet owes you more, but they really don't. They paid for last night's accomodations and you will also get about €400 compensation. That will absolutely cover any costs incurred. There is no reason for you to get any more from them. How much the rest of your holiday cost has nothing to do with them.

APC303 · Yesterday 11:47

Someone I know got stuck in Germany last night because their plane couldn't leave wherever had lightning so wasn't even at their airport. I 'think' that is covered but those delayed at the original airport wouldn't be.

PropertyD · Yesterday 11:53

OP - you are sounding a bit silly now. EasyJet is cheap. That is why you chose them. Goodness knows what your AirBNB cost but when you do things seperately YOU have to sort it out.

Buy a package next time!

They're referring to the EasyJet bit being cheap.

You chose a budget airline and are now pissed off that you've had a budget experience.

I don’t think a “budget” experience is being treated like crap

Honestly you are on a hiding to nothing here. There is lots of surely, I overheard etc…

You have a hotel, you have been booked on the next flight and I honestly don’t think anyone said from EasyJet ‘it’s not my problem’.

How much was your AibnB?

Surely it is though as it’s their fault I’ve not made it tonight?

Unfortunately that just tough. I had to pay an extra days car parking when homeward bound flight delayed overnight and couldn't claim that back

You can however claim hotel and food expenses and depending on reason for calke ration EU/ UK 261 compensation

No easyjet staff generally just hide if there are issues

MorrisonsPlatter · Yesterday 12:16

My EasyJet flight to Lisbon was cancelled yesterday at an hour's notice. It was the last flight of the season.
Fortunately I had no accommodation booked.
I've booked a Flixbus for Wednesday which will involve two wait/transfers and take 50 hours. That's life I guess.

jackstini · Yesterday 12:18

You haven’t been treated like crap though - you have a new flight, a hotel paid for overnight and will get compensation for the delay

That is normal for any airline and everyone would have been in the same situation. Sometimes human error happens, or people are sick, or cars break down. They didn’t have crew to
fly, so can’t just magic some up - but have got you on the next possible flight (& gave you the option to fly into another airport same day - which I get you now wish you had chosen, so more disgruntled)

Has your Airbnb replied?
Are you travelling alone?

Ginmonkeyagain · Yesterday 12:24

Earlier this summer our train from Paris to Toulouse was cancelled due to heatwave speed restrictions. As we were self organised SNCF offered us what they had to - a chance to rebook a similar journey or get our money back. Luckily I managed to find an alternative train the same day but it meant our plans to arrive in Toulouse early afternoon were screwed and we didn't arrive until 8pm and much of the first day of our holiday was mainly spent in a very hot Gare du Nord frantically scanning the SNCF app for train tickets.

Not ideal but this is the chance you take when you self organise.

HumberSquid · Yesterday 12:25

OneStepForwardsTenStepsBack · 28/08/2026 22:06

I don’t think that’s true.

It is though, depending on which part of the world you're in. Certainly in Europe.

tpwk · Yesterday 12:28

EasyJet have denied my claim stating it was ATC restrictions so no compensation. Absolutely unbelievable
