Everyday phrases that piss me off

As the title goes , a couple of examples:

It only costs xxx - What an incredibly ignorant thing to say in this day and age of mass inequality. On any given day there's a bullshit thread on here comparing pension plans and the amount of hundreds of thousands people have saved compared to the ones who have nothing saved.

Well I've never seen/heard that before - well Jackie, I've never seen anyone abuse a wheelchair user or a trans person or a Jewish person in my own life, but I believe that it happens, despite my not witnessing it.

Feel free to rant about other stuff that people are willfully oblivious to.

Definitely fuming 🤣

Misuse of certain words:

Unique means it's the only one. It doesn't mean rare or usual.

Decimate means reduce by 10%. It doesn't mean destroy.

Exponential means growing faster the bigger it gets, usually in multiples over time. It doesn't just mean getting bigger.

Unprecedented means it has never happened before. It doesn't mean shocking or extreme.

“Hope you are well” “Hope this email finds you well”
who invented this and why? It didn’t exist when emailing 10 years ago or have I become a grumpy old woman?

Singular terms for plurals, e.g.: pair your nice cardigan with a linen trouser and a low-heeled shoe. So pretentious.

”Lame” as a pejorative.

”Yeah yeah yeah” instead of yes. Typically pronounced “Yi-yi-yeah”. Sounds very dismissive and seems more common in S/SE.

Also add a nice red lip with that. Just the one lip? So one red and one pink?

Gettingbysomehow · 24/08/2026 22:49

Leggins without the g.
Pound i.e ten pound for multiple pounds.

Ooooohhhyessss · 24/08/2026 22:49

Sorry for your loss…hate that expression when someone is bereaved ! It’s not a handbag or a necklace..it’s a human being!

Ooooohhhyessss · 24/08/2026 22:52

Boundaries is another cringe for me 😡

I heard "guesting" on an advert yesterday. As in "whether you're hosting or guesting". Whoever came up with that needs to be sacked.

Gettingbysomehow · 26/08/2026 07:31

The absurd use of the word layering by every clothing company.
As in this is a great "layering piece" when its just an ordinary sodding teashirt or a jumper.
Yesterday I read - layer this dress with a pair of tights???
I have visions of people wearing 20 items of clothes at once to make sure they are layering as much as possible.
I have a dress or a jumper which I put on so I dont have to go out naked.
They are not "layering pieces".
Can you tell it really pisses me off and its getting more absurd by the day.

It’s the word “piece” that always grips me (as I mentioned up thread). It just sounds so sodding pretentious.

MyPantsAreFartCentral · 26/08/2026 08:31

I sometimes mindlessly watch QVC especially when Ruth Langsford is on (just for the laughs).and I can guarantee that the phrase "You can dress it up or down" will be said at least twice. I hate that!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/08/2026 09:40

Bestie (unless you’re no more than 7)
Judgy -as too often seen on MN
Gonna, kinda, sorta, tryna, 🤮

And not all over the place, I know, but ‘accidental’ landlord.
Nobody rents out a property by accident. You did it entirely on purpose because it made financial sense at the time.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/08/2026 09:55

I forgot ‘brekkie’! My FiL used to say ‘brekker’ which IMO is even worse.

Inertia · 26/08/2026 10:12

Mycatmax · 24/08/2026 07:17

“Bits”
”picky bits”

Obsessed with

Curated

I haven't heard this much. I bet its used by a lot of influences though.
I'm probably the wrong age bracket.

"literally"

It's starting to die out but not quickly enough.

I heard this the other day ‘He is literally his mum and she is literally her dad’. No. They are not ‘literally’ their respective parents, they strongly resemble them. I held my tongue.

Mycatmax · 26/08/2026 10:36

SpiceDad · 24/08/2026 21:27

Instead of saying for e g. "I'm going to the pub" I have noticed lots of people say "I'm going pub". Very annoying.

Oh I HATE this too!

Going cinema
Going football

😡😡😡

scalt · 26/08/2026 10:36

All the words weaponised in 2020 to spread fear, dismay, and anger.
New normal.
Flocking.
Uptick.
Cases.
Crisis. (Used as a scary buzzword long before then)
Unprecedented.
