Everyday phrases that piss me off

As the title goes , a couple of examples:

It only costs xxx - What an incredibly ignorant thing to say in this day and age of mass inequality. On any given day there's a bullshit thread on here comparing pension plans and the amount of hundreds of thousands people have saved compared to the ones who have nothing saved.

Well I've never seen/heard that before - well Jackie, I've never seen anyone abuse a wheelchair user or a trans person or a Jewish person in my own life, but I believe that it happens, despite my not witnessing it.

Feel free to rant about other stuff that people are willfully oblivious to.

OP posts:

At its finest!

Every second person commenting on social media these days posts "(insert random noun) at its finest!". And 95% of them put an apostrophe in its.

Regurgitation of soundbites without any original thought at its finest.

NI is (currently) part of the UK and ‘Can I get?’ is completely acceptable here. Or, more commonly, ‘Can I have?’ If you said ‘Please may I have?’ people would think you were taking the piss😅 Some of our phrasing of the English language evolves from how it was originally expressed in Gaelic, but I don’t know if that’s the case here. Perhaps we exported it to the US.

I should’ve said England, my apologies! Bad habit.

My parents are Irish but my mother was very keen on assimilation, you could never tell she had a thick cork accent growing up, she speaks with perfect Received Pronunciation. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed it when there actually, I have not yet been to NI though.

I am exclusively talking about millennials and younger brits that are Americanised*

FantasyFoodhall · 24/08/2026 04:46

She/he is ‘one of the good ones’. Awful

honeylulu · 24/08/2026 05:04

Amazing - used to mean nice/quite good. Amazing should be reserved for things that actually amaze you.

Hating on - we used to just talk about hating something. Where on earth does "on" come into it? Completely superfluous.

The loss of "to be". So "the dog needs to be walked" becomes "dog needs walked". Needs fed. Needs gone. Go toilet. Just stop it and talk properly!

First come, first serve. It's SERVED.

POV when referring to an experience NOT a point of view.

Reach out/growth mindset/objective portfolio and other ghastly corporate jargon.

From the get go.

MinnieMountain · 24/08/2026 05:50

Hack. DH has started saying it lots and it's irritating me.

Incorrect use of "may". I see people writing "may you" when asking for something at work.

Pippa12 · 24/08/2026 05:53

‘It’s kinda like’

It either is or it isn’t!!!!

Blushingm · 24/08/2026 06:22

‘It’s triggering’ or ‘I’m triggered’

muddyford · 24/08/2026 06:27

Starting a sentence with 'so' instead of getting on with saying what you want to say.
Ending a post with 'right' in a passive-aggressive way, implying everyone will agree with you.

muddyford · 24/08/2026 06:29

'Super' used instead of 'very'.

Isittimeformynapyet · 24/08/2026 06:44

I've recently seen "for context" in loads of OPs and it's starting to irritate me. It's all simply the information required to start a discussion in the first place.

It's a totally unnecessary thing to say.

Level1469 · 24/08/2026 06:52

'Is there anything else I can help you with today?' as spoken by HMRC and utility providers, having failed to 'help' with the original reason for calling.

TroysMammy · 24/08/2026 06:54

Super
Tummy
Guys
Reach out

TENDTOprocrastinate · 24/08/2026 07:05

OffredxJune · 24/08/2026 07:10

"Shaking with rage"
"Incandescent with rage"

greenpolkadot55 · 24/08/2026 07:15

' very much so '...
drives me bonkers.. What's wrong with saying ' absolutely '..

Pippatpip · 24/08/2026 07:15

Absolutely’. Every time a interviewer asks someone commenting on a something newsworthy, that person’s first response is ‘Absolutely’. Grrrrrrrrr. Oh the unique thing drives me potty. ‘It is almost unique’. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Mycatmax · 24/08/2026 07:17

“Bits”
”picky bits”
”salady bits”

Gettingbysomehow · 24/08/2026 07:23

"Reach for", "reach out". As in..... you'll reach for this dress time and again.
No I wont, I'll wear this dress time and again.
I wont reach out to you either. I'll contact you if I need anything.

Rufusisturnedon · 24/08/2026 07:26

100% as positive answer - just say yes Ffs

planespotter71 · 24/08/2026 07:27

Somebody posted about the cost of fish and chips yesterday and were ‘seriously shocked’ Yes, they might have been disappointed it was a bit pricey, but not needed to sit down with a sweet cup of tea 🙄
