Crash on A66 that killed two police officers and 5 others…

Am I correct that the other victims were 5 lads travelling in one car the wrong way up the motorway? EXACTLY the same as the 5 Irish lads who died a few days ago travelling the wrong way up a motorway too? Surely not twice in a week? Is there some sort of mental social media thing going on, telling kids to drive up the wrong way? Like a dare? Just cannot believe it happened once, let alone twice. Just devastating.

My mum just told me about this. Wtf is wrong with people and this stupid bloody craze. I’m petrified to let my daughter drive at the best of times let alone these total utter idiots on the road to add to boot. I just can’t understand it. I can sense why people steal or burgle even - desperation or drugs but driving the wrong way along a road is just pure murder, there’s no other word for it. If you intentionally take a knife out you do so with the intent of something happening right? So why when you go out in a 2 tonne vehicle is it not classed as murder if this happens? It’s just pure unadulterated stupidity.

Beeloux · 22/08/2026 20:05

Earlier this year I was travelling on a nearby A road close to where this happened.

The turnoff was on an uphill bend and a car came zooming towards me around it travelling the wrong way! Both swerved and I just missed the curb.

Was a scary experience. Thank god I was going slow as it was dark and icy. A very close call.

Heyhelga · 22/08/2026 20:05

What a horrific waste of life.

Anyone doing such an immature social media trend is absolute pondlife in my book. Running the risk of taking out innocent bystanders through their own stupid actions in the process is totally inexcusable. Some air heads simply don't consider this thought process.

If it is confirmed that it is linked to a stupid trend, then I hope the pondlife's families have the decency to not try to pin the blame upon the police pursuit and make a financial claim for damages.

I'm sad to say that you are part of the problem.

Wringing your hands, blubbering into a greasy hankie and saying, "Don't judge."

Let's hope, next time, it isn't you or yours at the wrong end of a car speeding the wrong way.

You won't be so quick with *they're only children" bollocks then.

Their kids are probably degenerates doing this shit thats why they're trying to pretend its no big deal !

Gatekeeper · 22/08/2026 20:06

Its just horrible...this is a member of my extended family. What a bloody waste of a bonny lad

HenriettaHippopotamus · 22/08/2026 20:06

Social media companies need to do better to quickly remove any criminal behaviour then it won’t be a thing.

RisingSunn · 22/08/2026 20:07

Sorry I haven’t read through thread. I have read that this is a social media challenge. I saw it being discussed last week.

AndyKitten · 22/08/2026 20:07

I do feel sorry for the children, because I realise just how fucked up their childhood is, what with the SM and peer pressure, and I would not be surprised if some of them were there because they felt they had to be seen to be as tough as their mates. I don’t know about the one driving and for those cheering him up. I feel that I ought to feel sorry for them as well, but it makes me angry.

Where were their parents in this fucking mess though?

And I feel desperately sorry for the two police officers who lost their life in this awful way.

Ive read an awful lot of posts that all claim the car was definitely travelling in the wrong direction. I've also seen the photo released of the crash and the police car looks obliterated, well TBH both cars do. I cant imagine how that could happen unless it was a head on crash.
If it is true then the only people I have any sympathy for are the families of the police officers.

You have no sympathy for the families of the young men in the Passat? How cold!!

I read about the string of offences the boys in the Irish crash had. One of them had previously stolen a car and crashed into a motorcyclist causing life altering injuries and that didn’t deter him from continuing to drive like that.
So many people hear these stories and just seem to think it’s normal teenage behaviour. It’s really not.

I haven’t either.
Parenting no 1. Be a fucking parent & don’t let your kids run wild.
I do how ever feel huge compassion for the dead police officers, their families, the officers/paramedics & fireman who attended the scene and saw horrific things.
I’ve been upset all day for them.
But the 5 fucking idiots who are responsible for murdering two coppers-nope. Not a whisper of compassion for them or their families. This will hardly have been the first time the 5 of them did something ‘stupid’ FAFO.

ItsPickleRick · 22/08/2026 19:53

Teenagers KNOW that a pursuit will be called off if they drive the wrong way down a major road. What starts as a car theft, or a joy ride, turns into a life and death situation when the police are chasing them and they are well aware that all they have to do to get the police to back off is head the wrong way down a carriageway.

I don’t know what can be changed to stop this?

This
Whilst they may be posting on tik tok, the primary reason is that they are criminals and they know driving the wrong way up the motorway will mean that the police will cease any pursuit

hiermetzandvullen · 22/08/2026 20:16

I wonder is this a social media thing? DH and I had a narrow miss last week with two young men driving the wrong way (in two cars) down a one way street at speed.

heartsinvisiblefury · 22/08/2026 20:16

Zero sympathy for the idiots that caused this and all the social media idiots who encourage it. Thick as shit the lot of them.

DaisyDooley · 22/08/2026 20:17

Gatekeeper · 22/08/2026 20:09

We live in NE England and my DH is an HGV Class 1 driver. He regularly drives up and down the main roads (A1, M1, A19 etc) at night. He sees some crazy and very bad driving, but this latest craze is pure madness and so dangerous for every other road user. Every other driver must worry that they are going to come across someone driving like this, and every family member left at home, like myself, lives in constant fear of that knock on the door - for what????
