Am I correct that the other victims were 5 lads travelling in one car the wrong way up the motorway? EXACTLY the same as the 5 Irish lads who died a few days ago travelling the wrong way up a motorway too? Surely not twice in a week? Is there some sort of mental social media thing going on, telling kids to drive up the wrong way? Like a dare? Just cannot believe it happened once, let alone twice. Just devastating.

I don't think it is at all clear if the 5 yesterday were travellers or not (seems possibly not) but I live in a small English market town and (through previous work) can come up with half a dozen families who have offspring who could easily do the same thing off the top of my head. Their relatives would also be likely to respond in a similar way on FB etc. In the much larger, much more deprived town a few miles away you can multiply that by several 100.

Getting a grip on the behaviour of disaffected young men from families with a multigenerational culture of lack of aspiration, ingrained joblessness, substance abuse, criminality and total disrespect for anyone who isn't exactly like them is needed, really needed, but it has been for some time and how you actually turn it round on a large scale and break these patterns, I don't know. There do have to be much swifter consequences for antisocial/criminal behaviour and more intervention at earlier stages, whether the families are receptive or not. It would all cost though and it would take time.

Dont understand fully. Do they think they wont t die if they drive on the wrong side of the road, or do they know they will but don't care.

I agree one of the biggest barriers for children within minority groups (a certain one in Ireland anyway) is their own community.
I've witnessed it.
Young kids from that community mixing with "settled" people and playing and dreaming of what they'll be when they grow up.
Sometimes be excluded from mixing early due to prejudice. However even those who mixed got to a point where they still left school at 13.

The boys particularly don't seem to stand a chance.
Yes there are opportunities for them but it's really not easy to turn against your community and take those. There are so many toxic men in the families I've witnessed. The boys couldn't even step out and change if they wanted to.

The only answer I can see is people from within communities to make themselves better role models.
The Two Norries aren't from a minority community but did have a "disadvantaged ' area to grow up in.
They are now fantastic role models and try to help people to make a life for themselves.
If we could have many more like them.

People look up to their own better than any outside source coming in "preaching ".

I can't imagine a 1980s Home Secretary mentioning the families of the 5 occupants of the Passat if an incident like this had occurred back then. He would have paid tribute to the police and the other emergency services. I also doubt whether journalists would have picked up on the 'omission' - it would be expected.

I wish the local MP had only mentioned the police officers.

Young men/teenage boys are risk takers. They are the ones who tombstone, they are the ones who run around on roofs, who do wheelies in and out of the traffic on their stupid e-motorbikes, they are the ones who do most of the stupid and/or antisocial stuff.

They might regret it. The amount of abuse on the families pages from the five lads in Ireland. Comments about a dust pan and brush scrapping them up, equal amounts of brain thrown into each coffin to share it out, etc, I understand that there is a lot of anger.
God forbid if I was ever in this position with DS, (highly unlikely) I would have a private funeral and avoid the public.

I agree with you, I’m just saying she was trying to be diplomatic, which in the circumstances was extremely difficult. Some of the comments by the five’s relatives are unbelievable in the circumstances . Better they kept quiet.

I mentioned the lad who went racing at 2 in the morning. Never in a million years did he imagine that he'd kill his best friend and leave himself with a life-changing injury.

It's the same with the cases we've had of teenagers speeding on Fife country roads.

The funerals of three of the four teenagers killed in a Fife car crash have taken place.
The accident happened near Eden Bridge in Fife last Monday and killed Craig Lawson, 17, Steven Garland, 17, Mona Halliday, 16, and Lisa Donaldson, 16.
The funerals of Craig, from Ladybank, Steven, from Pitlessie and Mona, who attended Bell Baxter High School, Cupar, took place on Monday.
A service is being held for Lisa, also a Bell Baxter pupil, on Tuesday.
The youngsters were travelling in a Ford Fiesta on the A92, just north of the Eden Bridge in Fife, when it appeared to lose control on a bend and collide with a Volvo car travelling in the opposite direction.

The Fiesta left the road and crashed into a field.
Fife Constabulary said early inquiries suggested speed was a "significant factor" in the accident.
It is understood Steven Garland, who attended Fife College, was the driver of the car and had only recently passed his test.
His funeral was held at Cults Church ahead of a burial at Cults Cemetery.
The service for Craig, an apprentice plumber, from Roselea Gardens, Ladybank, was held at Ladybank Church before his burial at Kettle Cemetery.
Mona's funeral service took place at Kirkcaldy Crematorium.

This is absolutely appalling. While I am sorry that five young lads from crime-addled Middlesbrough were brought up to live lives that led them to this terrible criminality that has cost their lives and those of others, I am truly angry on behalf of the families and loved ones of those innocent police officers whose lives were taken. Some of the balloon releasing and eulogising of these young criminals is quite tone deaf. Their parents will be devastated of course but I hope they reflect on the steps and actions or inactions that led to these five simply having no sense of right or wrong; this is a terrible and disgusting event. My heart goes out to the officers’ families.

From their POV they’ve done risky behaviour and survived, so death and consequences are things that happen to other people.

There was a double fatal accident local to us on Friday night. 2 late teen boys (driver and passenger) killed in an accident involving 3 identical cars. It was on a straight stretch of road where two lanes merge into one. The assumption is that they were racing at speed and the identical cars are apparently easy to insure for teenage drivers.

Sounds like they have taken no responsibility at all. Their feral kids had form but they did nothing about it and now, as predicted it's all 'Oh my sweet boy. Always helping out his friends!' and balloon releases. No self awareness or sympathy for those they killed.
