Where Travellers are concerned, a lot of people (and I don't think priests are immune from this) would be afraid to speak up. Put yourself in the priest's shoes. What do you say when a gold coffin turns up at your church? Refuse to accept it, and say you're not conducting the funeral? You'd be taking your life in your hands! Emotions run high at funerals at the best of times. Traveller funerals are known for violence between feuding gangs of Travellers. There's a good chance that some of the mourners are carrying slash hooks (or have them stashed in their car). Add alcohol into the mix and it's a recipe for disaster.
When word gets out that a Traveller funeral is due to take place, all of the local businesses close their doors. They're liable to be taken to court if they refuse to admit entry to a Traveller. But they also know that some (not all, I hasten to add) Travellers may damage the premises (at best) or commit a violent act (at worst). Easiest thing to do is to close your doors, even if it inconveniences the local population.
BTW I'm aware that only a small proportion of the young lads who have made the headlines in recent weeks were Travellers. But I'm sure the same applies where the deceased come from well known criminal families. If you're running a funeral business, would you be brave enough to say, "Look, innocent people have been injured/killed as a result of the activities of this young man. Don't you think it's sending out the wrong message to have a gold coffin/huge photo displays/big floral displays?". Or would you ignore your misgivings and take the money?
Anyway, I'm very sorry to hear that two British police officers have been killed in the latest incident. My thoughts are with their families and friends. I'm also thinking of the Irish family (three sisters and a little boy), some of whom have been seriously injured.
As for the clamour for solutions to the problems, I'm not sure that there are any quick fix solutions. The problems are really entrenched in those communities and families where criminal activities like 'joy'riding take place - toxic masculinity, low educational attainment, high rates of unemployment/dependence on benefits, substance abuse, lack of respect for figures of authority etc. For a lot of these kids, their futures are written before they ever leave the womb. And it's not a pretty picture.
