Crash on A66 that killed two police officers and 5 others…

bookworm1982 · 22/08/2026 18:53

Am I correct that the other victims were 5 lads travelling in one car the wrong way up the motorway? EXACTLY the same as the 5 Irish lads who died a few days ago travelling the wrong way up a motorway too? Surely not twice in a week? Is there some sort of mental social media thing going on, telling kids to drive up the wrong way? Like a dare? Just cannot believe it happened once, let alone twice. Just devastating.

I really am not trying to cause an argument, and I'm definitely not trying to be funny. I agree that what happened was awful - that the boys who did it behaved dreadfully - were quite possibly awful people. I feel awful for the police who died and their families. I'm just saying - I also feel awful for the boys' families. And I don't extrapolate from what they did to their community. There are huge problems between travellers and non-travellers, some of which create the conditions in which this kind of behaviour happens (including possibly callousness to the victims, because they're "outsiders"). But pejorative discourse about "them" compounds the problem.

I appreciate that Travellers are legally recognised as an ethnic group, although personally I don't think they should be and hopefully one day we might get some more case law that overturns that finding. But we are where we are.

Where I disagree with you is the suggestion that people's attitudes towards Travellers simply amount to blaming an entire ethnic group for the actions of a few individuals. There are legitimate criticisms of aspects of Traveller culture and of patterns of behaviour that settled communities repeatedly encounter.
Traveller communities themselves openly describe extremely traditional gender roles, girls leaving education young, early marriage and expectations of women that I would regard as deeply sexist and misogynistic. There are also longstanding and well-documented conflicts around antisocial behaviour, illegal dumping, unauthorised sites and attitudes towards people outside the community.

Your comment about the “grieving mum who didn’t have the opportunity to get an education” whose fault is that? Once again, the culture, which allows that to happen, in defiance of the laws of the land in which they live I might add which mandates compulsory education to age 16.

Poor behaviour and attitudes don’t become acceptable because of “culture”. Not travellers but some cultures practice FGM, We aren’t racist to point out that some aspects of particular cultures and ethnic groups are abhorrent and deeply problematic,

None of that means that every individual Traveller behaves badly, and of course individuals should be judged on their own actions. But neither do I think it's honest to pretend that widespread hostility towards Travellers appeared spontaneously because settled people collectively decided to pick on a vulnerable minority.

I can't think of another ethnic group about which I hear about and experience such consistently negative experiences from people across completely different backgrounds and parts of the country. That doesn't make every allegation true, nor every Traveller responsible for what another Traveller does. But it does mean I'm not prepared to dismiss every criticism of the community as racism.

And yes, the individuals involved in this terrible crash are responsible for their own behaviour. I don't blame every Traveller for what they did same as I wouldn’t blame every teenage boy. I just don't accept that criticism of wider cultural practices and recurring behaviours is automatically equivalent to blaming an entire race.

Why is their bad spelling relevant? This sort of snide disdain is part of why minority cultures close ranks, and make a show of closing ranks, at times like this. If you can't find any empathy for a grieving mother, partly because she can't spell, of course she's going to stick to her own, and quite possibly hate you back.

And I don't feel "snide disdain" , I feel absolute disgust and loathing towards these individuals and the people in their community who are holding them up as some sort of heroes.
And the people making excuses for them and trying to preach a very misguided ideology.....

NeverKnowinglyUnderstated · 23/08/2026 09:01

Please enlighten us as to how any of this is the fault of the two police officers killed by this scum?
Are you serious? If so, I despair....

No - no, not at all! That's not at all what I meant. Of course I don't think the police officers were at fault.

I was talking about the problems between travellers and non-travellers more generally (on the assumption, which seems to be running through the whole thread, that the boys were travellers). I was saying that I think the tensions between travellers and non-travellers emerge from attitudes and behaviours from both sides. Travellers aren't just victims, but non-travellers have attitudes that don't help build bridges either.

I do think the best parenting in the world cannot always stop criminality. It's the pride these parents have in their 'top lads' which is appalling. Demonstrating why they were such little shits with mummy and daddy waving them off on their next joy ride.

I agree with you; however, I see many parents actively choosing not to parent, especially their boys.

ComeBackTo · 23/08/2026 09:05

There needs to be confirmation that all of these men in the A66 crash were travellers before assumptions create division and a ‘blame someone else not like us’ rhetoric.

These are law breaking, dangerous killers with extremely disrespectful friends and family. Part of the UK, regardless of their background.

The rationale is just that that's what funerals do. If you start to make exceptions, it's not a tradition or a custom any more, it's just a choice - and those singular exceptions to the custom accumulate into an erosion of a whole culture. Minorities don't let one bad act (or even one bad person) within their ranks undermine the whole culture.

Also - of course those boys ruined peoples lives, and it is despicable that they did that - but they did also light up people's lives as well (different people, obv). I don't expect anyone to feel sad for the boys' families, but I do. The fact remains that their mothers are going to be heartbroken. Almost no one is wholly bad, even "career criminals", and those boys who did this awful thing will also have done beautiful things too. Their mums will remember toddler cuddles that will feel like yesterday.

Their mums will be asking - as any mother here would - what could I have done differently? All of you may think it's obvious what she should have done, and be certain it's her own bad parenting that's to blame. Just imagine - she may well be thinking the same, and it's her own son she's lost. I think - if her parenting was to blame - she's gotten enough punishment, without her whole community then denying her son what they consider a proper funeral.

Celebrating and championing criminals - dead or alive is a tradition or custom that needs to die out.

It fucking disgraceful.

I live very locally, the area is over run with these feral rats. Facebook already full of AI generated flyers for the 5 separate balloon releases. Generations of complete and utter scum. And yes I still feel sympathy for their families losing their children but much, much more so for the police officers families.

Metalmotha · 23/08/2026 09:06

EssCarGo · 22/08/2026 19:30

Children. Doing stupid child things. All dead.

But yeah, fuck em. Yay for the gene pool though!

Stealing a car and driving the wrong way down a dual carriageway is not “stupid childish things” it’s evil
snd has resulted in the deaths of two men in their 30s, doing nothing more than their job, protecting others. I have zero sympathy for the kids (or their families tbh) I have a 14 year old. He would never have even dreamed of doing something like this because he has been brought up correctly, with morals. I know exactly where he is in the early hours of the morning, in bed.

My sympathy lies with the family and friends of the police officers.

We need to start cracking down on unruly kids and their families at an early age. We need to stop being so soft

ThisPoisedGoldGuide · 23/08/2026 09:07

^^Oh and they're not travellers, pretty sure on that.

They were taking about the incident in Ireland, not the one in which the two police officers died.

Edited

The family hit by those teens could quite easily have been killed. As it is they were severely injured, was that their/our fault?

How hard can it be for social media platforms to block content glorifying criminal activity? Governments are culpable too for pandering to these exploitative companies while they hasten social breakdown. It says everything that ThickTok is banned in its country of origin.

How hard can it be for social media platforms to block content glorifying criminal activity?

I wonder if the problem is that there isn't an actual human involved in the screening process. The AI or algorithm surely can't read the subcontext and understand the intentions of the video the same way a human can. For example, could AI mistakenly approve a video as: Happy Friends Vlogging in a New Car rather than seeing Drunk Criminals Driving Erratically in Stolen Car which is how a human would interpret it? Just a thought.

Disgust and loathing about the criminality - understandable. Snide disdain about the low literacy - not understandable (to me). It was the latter I was asking about.

and those atttitudes don’t appear out of no where do they. Maybe if crime didn’t shoot through the roof, land damaged and broken into, aggressive behaviour towards locals, leaving areas like 3rd world rubbish dumps people might be a bit more lenient

See, I don't blame a whole community for the actions of individuals or groups within it. I'd call that being a racist. But I get the impression we wouldn't agree on that, or much else.

And I'm not wrong about attitudes in Ireland. I know Ireland has plenty of what I'd call racists in it. I just said, not all of Ireland is like that. And I'm definitely not wrong about that: I could name at least three people in Ireland who aren't racist.

I'm as disgusted as anyone else by the actions of the driver and whoever was encouraging him. I still think everyone should get treated with dignity in death (however that looks to the dead, their family, their community). And I'd no more blame all travellers for this than I'd blame all white Brits for Fred West or Bonnie Blue or any of the many, many other psychopaths that come from that ethnic group. I don't even think being white British makes you more likely to be a psychopath. Aren't I generous.

Racist my arse!

They're Irish-their blood is the exact same as mine. They are the same fucking race. Historically, they used to be call Tinkers and they're laughing their heads off at the daft twats who think they are another race.

I live in England and it is the same with English Travellers-their blood is the exact same as English people. They are the same race.

The jumping gobshite who came up with the idea that they suffer racism should be made to give a public apology to every person who has been harmed in any way by these communities-from having to clean up their literal shit to being killed by them.

It is common sense to want to keep away from people who choose not to obey society's rules-that is not racism but if you want to call it that, fill your boots.

Meanwhile, they do what they want, we pay for it, they contribute nothing good and they have an army of antichrists ready to defend them.

ThisPoisedGoldGuide · 23/08/2026 09:12

In addition, no doubt Cleveland Police officers will be expected this week to attend these balloon releases as there will inevitably be a public order issue with bikes/quads etc. This anti social behaviour is just completely ingrained here, I've got no idea how you would actually go about stopping it.

And surrounded by family and friends who think the sun shines out of their bum. The whole culture is wrong. These are not travellers btw.

Yes.

Someone from my neck of the woods recently died a violent death. Social media is full of posts praising this 'lovely man' who was 'a friend to all' and a 'pure soul'.

As a teenager who'd recently left school, he was involved in conning pensioners and later appears to have been involved in organised crime.

Again - not a Traveller.

What do you mean "snide disdain"?

No-one should take the piss out of people who have genuine learning difficulties.

However, I do have disdain for illiterates who had a free education made available to them and chose not to take advantage of it.

Or are you saying that every one of them has Special Educational Needs because if that is the case, then that's a bit patronising of you , isn't it?

It seems they weren’t travellers so let’s not derail this thread with discussing and blaming communities different to ours.

The actions of these young men is a huge cause for concern in all communities in the UK. Something is going badly wrong, even in death.

A marked difference to the police and families of the two police officers who are behaving with dignity and respect.
