I have a trans cat

My dog thinks he's a cat. Obviously, biologically he isn't a cat, but he thinks he is (should I gently tell him? Will he grow out of this?) I'm thinking of giving him a cat name as affirmation that I understand want he wants inside. He was born into the wrong body.

When people describe their cats, he fits all the stereotypes, he chases birds, mice and butterflies. He loves a scratch pole. He chases balls of wool. He is completely untrainable. He sneers when given instructions, he's the boss of his empire. He comes in and out as he pleases.

He has excessive sleeping, he scent-marks objects or people by rubbing, kneading with paws, (he does this if he wants picking up) and he has short bursts of frantic running. He's nothing like a dog. He thinks he's a cat, he behaves like a cat, therfore he is?

He's an independent sole, a predator and returns with presents for me, usually insects.

I should tell everyone to start calling him a cat. AIBU?

I think trans dogs and cats have always existed; it's just that we are more aware now of the inner struggle. Whenever you see that stereotypical dog behaviour in your 'cat' he is just searching for your acceptance. Go for it, tomorrow to the park, make his dreams come true.

Maybe you should get him some whiskers, ears and a sticky uppy tail so they can perfectly blend in. Don't forget the pretty collar with a bell on otherwise they will completely stand out and the Terfs will get him.

I like Tom and I think the OP's cat probably suits it. But if an alternative is needed then surely Felix works well. Or (as an outside option), my mum had a cat called Jumbo, would that work, OP?

Naturally, he sits on the cat side, why wouldn't he since he is a cat. The other cats need to accept that and stop screeching at him, they aren't really scared they are merely intolerant. There is plenty of room in the cat side. They need to adjust their behaviour, personally I think they are jealous of him.

Absolutely, they really need to reframe their experience. They think they are suffering but they have cis cat privilege. Your cat has undoubtedly suffered far more on their journey to their true self. I'm so pleased they are now living their best life. What a wonderful ally you are to have supported them through this all this!

All my friends' cats are trans, male to female - balls cut off. No biggie.

Thank you. They need to budge up and allow my cat in. Why should my cat sit with the scary dogs at risk from them, when he is a true cat. Trans cats face a significantly higher risk of barked abuse, harassment, and physical biting violence when forced to use dogs vet corners, due to a mismatch between their physical presentation and the facility. They report extreme vulnerability, intimidation, and targeted abuse if they enter dog designated vet corners. This cannot be tolerated, they must be allowed in the cats area where it is safe for them.

He is indeed still out and may have his girlfriend with him when he returns. Would it be appropriate to greet them with “ooh, look what the cat dragged in”?

Dogs aren't allowed on some parts of the beach near where I live. Something to do with safety I think. I know not every dog is going to behave badly, chase cats or bite someone but you can't know which ones are aggressive just by looking. Also some people just want a dog free area where they can hang out with their cats. There's plenty of other areas of beach that do allow dogs.

How lovely that your 'cat' can now go to these parts of the beach to avoid the scary dogs. I hope every is kind and puts aside their concerns about safety and their past experiences of dog bites etc so your cat can run free amongst his own kind.

I have a non binary dog OP. When she's in cat mode she sleeps on top of the sofa, climbs on tables and work tops and stalks birds and mice but when in dog mode she likes going for walks and tries to chase neighbourhood cats. It may be that she just wants to join them, of course.
