I have a trans cat

My dog thinks he's a cat. Obviously, biologically he isn't a cat, but he thinks he is (should I gently tell him? Will he grow out of this?) I'm thinking of giving him a cat name as affirmation that I understand want he wants inside. He was born into the wrong body.

When people describe their cats, he fits all the stereotypes, he chases birds, mice and butterflies. He loves a scratch pole. He chases balls of wool. He is completely untrainable. He sneers when given instructions, he's the boss of his empire. He comes in and out as he pleases.

He has excessive sleeping, he scent-marks objects or people by rubbing, kneading with paws, (he does this if he wants picking up) and he has short bursts of frantic running. He's nothing like a dog. He thinks he's a cat, he behaves like a cat, therfore he is?

He's an independent sole, a predator and returns with presents for me, usually insects.

I should tell everyone to start calling him a cat. AIBU?

My cat genuinely feels misunderstood.

(and yes, it is funny)

RelaxAndDetox · 22/08/2026 18:56

Really what? Can you show some empathy, try to understand his confusion 😕

He's not confused; he knows he's a cat. The only one being confused is you and other intolerant Terfs.

GarlicAnything · 22/08/2026 18:58

FREDDIE FELIX!

It's obvious!

paomara · 22/08/2026 18:59

Which toilet does he use?

RelaxAndDetox · 22/08/2026 18:59

GarlicAnything · 22/08/2026 18:55

Aha, I was getting too carried away by ex-Freddie's transness!

There's a shortage of (human) trans men killers, and none with overly theatrical names. Why shouldn't Freddie be Freddie The Cat??

He sounds marvellous 😻

Unlike humans, he doesn't kill humans, I consider insects fair kills, he us a car after all.

Those humans you speak of sound terrifying. Freddie soon to be renamed Tom, wouldn't hurt a human, apart from a playful scratch now and again. 🐾

OP's flower beds, she's already said 😄

I have one of these my dog refuses to eat dog food and will only eat cat food.

If it's the girl cat one, he may well be male.

RelaxAndDetox · 22/08/2026 18:53

Now you mention it, he does appear sad sometimes, when he catches his reflection in a mirror 🪞 should I worry he might 'do' something!

Definitely hide the scissors, you don't want him doing home, pointy ear, surgery.

I am trying. I'm torn by his biological reality but I don't want to hurt his feelings so I'm getting there. He looked delighted when I called him Tom Cat 🐈 . My son says I'm being silly but Ive pointed out to him.how important it is that we all respect his wishes.

I've written a list for my son to follow he MUST use his new correct name consistently. He MUST correct himself quickly and quietly if he makes a mistake, without making a big performance or burdening Tom with his guilt. He MUST avoid backhanded compliments or language that questions or overly scrutinizes Tom's identity. He must not offer bones since highly offensive behaviour.

I think that you must respect their wishes and provide correct food in future

Will Freddie need access to cats' safe spaces? Are his jumping and climbing skills up to scratch?

RelaxAndDetox · 22/08/2026 19:11

GarlicAnything · 22/08/2026 19:01

OP's flower beds, she's already said 😄

Only when outside. Fortunately, he's found a hole in the fence so is trying out the neighbour's seed bed now. He's really good at hiding it

Screw the other terrified cats in the “quiet cat corner” of the vet waiting room, it would be against his rights to not let him in there.

Gettingbysomehow · 22/08/2026 19:12

He's beautiful and brave.

This is the thing, he's not quite able to reach the kitchen surfaces yet. Great at running along the top of the sofa though.

The end of the bed, when the sun shines in the window, has been offered and accepted.

He must also notice him at all times and give him all the attention he deserves for being amazing, and also take no notice ever, he's just an ordinary cat, going about his day.

OtherS · 22/08/2026 19:15

I had one of these. He always used to want to sit on the work surfaces. But he was not cat sized, he was 25kg, and would try and climb you if you stood too close to a counter. He also hated rain and snow, was allergic to grass, and killed a rat once. Plus he really hated cis cats, presumably as they reminded him he was in the wrong body. So fully transitioned. Or at least, bloody awful at being a springer spaniel! I think you just have to let them be their true selves, however weird they may be..

No you mustn't, that would be so cruel 😢 let them be what they truly should be.

I see. I'm new to this. You are correct, he is a cat!

His dead name is Freddie.

Any ideas for suitable for new cat name.

Remember, a cat has nine lives. He can't be dead-named until he has used up all of his lives.
