AIBU to insist my parents book a hotel for their visit?

We have moved house recently and our parents have been wanting to visit. We have said they can but that they will have to book a hotel as the spare bedrooms aren’t ready yet, or they can wait another couple of months and everything will be done in the house so they can then stay with us.

They asked if there are beds in the spare rooms, which there are, so they suggested one of our children (adult and teenager) could sleep in there and they could have their room. I said no as the spare rooms are messy and being used for storage. They have now messaged our children to ask if they mind sleeping in another room so they can have their bedroom. I called my mum and told her not to do that, we had said no and if they want to visit, they need to get a hotel or wait.

Were we unreasonable to say no to this? My parents plan to visit for 2 weeks at the start of September. My oldest child is only here til just after they plan to leave as he is going back to uni and my teenager needs her own space for studying as she is starting year 13.

My children need their bedrooms which I have explained.

genuine question but why the “need”? The spare room is too messy for your kids but fine for your folks

so why do your kids need their rooms and the spare room is too messy for them?

RTFT.
And take a fucking chill pill.

There’s a beautiful irony in that post 😆

how old are your folks Op?

Homemerge · 22/08/2026 16:22

The “need” is your daughter need to study and your son needs his gf around?

why can’t you sleep in the spare room out of interest?

diddl · 22/08/2026 16:22

You're only 3hrs away & they don't want to stay for less than 2wks?

Bloody hell!

YABU for making such a confusing thread. They aren’t allowed to sleep in the spare room, they don’t want to sleep in the spare room? It’s weird for family to just not make it work but I can’t work out who’s being overly rigid in this situation.

She hasn't made "a confusing thread". As per usual, there are Mumsnetters not reading what she's written, writing their own narrative and suggesting solutions that have already been covered and discarded.

I would rather sleep under a bridge myself, than suggest my parents book a hotel.

Unfortunately, the parents don't feel the same way. Never mind a bridge, OP's parents refuse to even stay in OP 's spare room, because it's not good enough for them.

They have a clear choice. The spare room or a hotel. It's not down to the grandchildren to free up a 'better' room for them, to their own disadvantage.

But why can’t the Op give uk her room for her parents?

never seemed to have occurred to her

MN is like another world to me sometimes.

I guess it depends on family dynamics, and how much you want to see people.
In our family DC would always bunk together so family didn’t have to shell out for an expensive hotel stay. Why does a room have to be ‘ready’? If it has beds, why can’t someone sleep in there, it’s just somewhere to sleep?
I would never put family out and make them pay for a hotel, and I don’t know anyone else who wouldn’t let them stay either.
Your DM is probably thinking the same, hence her asking DC. No, she shouldn’t have don’t that, but is clearly thinking, as there are beds, she doesn’t want to pay for a hotel.

I agree, I can't believe these posts!

I’m guessing you’re not close? I had my parents to stay admittedly only for one night and we put them in our bed and we had a mattresses on the floor of an un decorated bedroom with no carpet! And TBH would happily have done it for longer if needs be. I’d move heaven and earth to spend time with people!

At least read all OP's posts, then you would know the answer to this.

And if they come in early September and stay in a hotel, they CAN see him.

This. Premier Inn? Split the cost with them?

Read the thread. As said before op has answered this. What is your problem with this thread?

But doing that for one night and for 2 weeks are very different things. Plus were your parents so entitled about it?

Our kids happily vacate their room and share together for MIL at Christmas, but she only stays 2 or 3 nights, is very grateful to them, has never asked them to, and it's at a convenient time for us when no one is trying to work or study from home or have renovations done!

We have said they can sleep in there and we will sort it out enough for them to do so, but they won’t.

We are only about 3 hours from them but they see this as a big journey and wouldn’t do it for just a long weekend.

Wow, so 3 hours is a big journey for them? How old are they, 97?

We often do 3 hours for an overnight visit to family, why can't they do that, and stay in the spare room, if it's just to see your son?

She's got builders coming in to renovate the ensuite of her own room during those 2 weeks and her parents don't want to be up and out by 7.30 am

If you are going to be really aggressive at least read ALL of OP's posts

Because the parents refuse to stay in OP's room because of the building work

As I said we would happily have done it for longer than 1 night. No my parents aren’t entitled about anything and we have a great relationship with them. It’s just sounds as though the whole family are being awkward! Parents, OP and kids!

WalkBackwards · 22/08/2026 16:33

I can’t find the post but a poster mentioned negotiating a good price on airbnb as it’s for 2 weeks and out of school holidays. Sorry to sound thick, but is negotiating a thing people do for Airbnb? We have always just paid the stated price but if we could get the price down if that’s an acceptable thing to do, that would be great.

There's a serious lack of reading comprehension from some posters. At the very least read the OPs posts. Her parents are only in their 60s, and appear to have high standards and want their own way. Op and husband are WFH with an ensuite being replaced during the 2 weeks her parents feel they should visit. And some of you feel she and her husband should move out of their own room. AND her parents have already said her room doesn't suit because of the work.
Either her parents rough it in a messy spare room for 2 weeks or stay in a hotel or visit when the house is ready.
We need a bathroom replaced and the idea of trying to do it while working from home is such a hateful idea I haven't got round to it... The idea of that, whilst also hosting "exacting" parents for 2 weeks would honestly tip me over the edge!

I think my mum gets anxious travelling now so I understand her wanting to visit for longer. I also know they are missing us which is sad. Most people here would visit someone 3 hours away in a day or maybe with an overnight stay but some people do get more anxious travelling as they get older. Not that they are old, they’re only in their 60s.

Blimey @WalkBackwards I am in my 60s and I drove an hour and a half each way last night to see a play. A brilliant production with a stellar cast mind, but still. My hobby often takes me on day trips of an hour or more each way.

A three-hour trip to me is a stay of one or two nights. I mean, longer is nice if it's a holiday for sure, but to visit someone, two nights is plenty.

Now it's clear that you have offered the spare room to them (and they have refused) I think they are being unreasonable. They could stay in the undecorated room (WHY would this be an issue? It wouldn't be for me) and do some sightseeing. Tbh even if the room was decorated, I would struggle to have a house guest who stayed two weeks. Even a parent (a child who used to live there is different somehow!).

GrievanceList · 22/08/2026 16:37

WalkBackwards · 22/08/2026 15:11

They are welcome to be here all day. They are welcome to sleep in the spare room but they won’t. They will go out most days and explore the area so they won’t be stuck in a hotel room.

Well you told them in your first post, they weren't welcome to stay as the ' the spare room wasn't ready' and then you have back tracked to say they are. So I am not surprised they are confused. It just doesn't seem very welcoming. And all that garbage about your kids needing their bedrooms for study.

I feel on the edge quite often at the moment. Thank god for wine. 🍷😂
