AIBU to be angry about comments on my granddaughters' names?

So, I have 5 grandchildren, this weekend I’m looking after all of them, my daughter and her husband are away to a wedding in France and my son and his wife have booked a little spa weekend.

I popped in to see some of my friends with them as I don’t often have the children and my friends like seeing them.

One of my friends had some other friends I’ve not met before over but we joined them. After introducing the children and then being sent to the kitchen to get a lollipop, one of these friends said oh don’t all the girls have little showgirl names, I must have looked a bit shocked as someone else then jumped in and said oh she doesn’t mean p*rnstar just very moulin rouge.

I just said I thought their names were lovely and moved on but now I’m back home I’m furious, I’m furious I didn’t give her a piece of my mind.

AIBU to think this is an absurd thing to say about children’s names?!

No I understand the showgirl reference.

But posters have said over and over it’s not an insult. So if it wasn’t an insult what is wrong with Roxy or Lola as a name?

In my opinion, nothing at all.

bittertwisted · Today 14:37

My son’s girlfriend is a Ruby, it has never crossed my mind it’s a ‘showgirl’ name, she just gets a lifetime of ‘RUBY RUBY RUBY RUBY’ 😂 Even I can’t help singing it in my head when I see her

bittertwisted · Today 14:39

And Lola is a traditional Spanish name, diminutive of Dolores

Nothing is wrong with them as names Op.

Don't let the friend get to you. She was rude. But it was made ruder by the fact there is some substance to the showgirl comment. Only some, but enough to make her comment, imo, a bit barbed.

But they are fine, and I am sure they will come to give them their own unique twist.

ETA then again, perhaps she'd love to be a showgirl! We might have her all wrong!

Bababear987 · Today 15:49

Those names wont be everyones cup of tea but the friend hasnt said anything rude she just said they are showgirl names, which they are. Its you who has taken a negative view of that. Could it be that youre a bit sensitive about it because you aren't that fussed on their names but feel the need to defend your daughter?

Personally love ruby but cant imagine calling a little baby/girl Roxy because I just dont think its a nice name.

It was a rude and sneery comment. And inappropriate. I would have been cross too.

Rude and sneery? How exactly?

ShagOnARock · Today 18:02

Ellenay · Yesterday 18:14

No, not Kitty. I fear this thread is just going to turn into a guessing game of their names instead of actually discussing the woman’s manners so I will share their names.
Lola, Roxy and Ruby.

My daughters have unusual names, well not in the grand scheme of Apple or Lucky, but unusual enough for girls to be commented on, I’m a different age to you, judging by the fact you have grandchildren only, but I wouldn’t like that comment either, they have lovely names, I bet she was named Elaine, or Brenda. Very 1950s middle suburbia. Children aren’t their names, but like I said, they have lovely names so they’re probably lovely children.

Looloolexi · Today 18:03

Completely unnecessary for this person to make the comment.

Lilrubes · Today 18:11

Dankanddrear · Yesterday 18:07

It was a crass and rude comment to make to the children's grandmother.

I'm sure your mutual friend was cross too.

Exactly. It's extremely rude imo.

Cynicalist · Today 18:17

Coinkidinki · Yesterday 18:18

"Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl" - even Barry Manilow agrees!

They're nice names, pretty but with an exotic touch - like the usual image of a showgirl.

Exactly what I’ve been singing to myself since OP posted the names!!! I love the name Lola and don’t think of it as anything other than that song and also the beautiful books by Lauren Child!

JJWT · Today 18:21

Oh ffs I have Barry Manilow stuck in my head now....

I would be annoyed if someone suggested my children were named after topless dancers with big feather headdresses. Because thats a rude and unfiltered thing to say out loud.

However if I had given them "stagename" type names like Fifi or Roxy then I would only have myself to blame I suppose. High School is a merciless place, far worse than a gaggle of awd biddies. Fifi could call herself Fiona, Kitty - Katherine, etc. Perhaps the parents were going for a Boho vibe. Oops.

Surgz · Today 18:25

Dooferer · Yesterday 18:04

I’m betting on Lola!

🤣deffo a showgirl

RosyFairy · Today 18:33

I think they are all lovely names - though my family is a little theatrical. It is a little odd for someone you've never met to make such a comment but I'm sure she didn't mean to offend you - probably thought she was being witty and clever. I expect, if she has any, her children and grandchildren don't have unusual names. My DD is called Aria - so that's pretty theatrical !

Moonlicker · Today 18:34

Poor little Blaze, Roxy, Candy, Lola and Stormy. 🥺

MyCupOfTea32 · Today 18:36

oh god. I sometimes say this to people meaning it as a compliment i.e. its a glamorous, famous person type name. Now I'm worried I've been offending people for years unintentionally! Especially to people with those names which were the exact three I guessed when I read your post.

I'd love a showgirl name... mine is boring

Moonlicker · Today 18:39

Hopefully people didn't take you up wrong. Seems like a fun comment misinterpreted.

bittertwisted · Today 18:39

I met a woman on holiday when DS1 was a baby. She was very posh, confident, glamorous- I was bedazzled by her. Her children were called Rafferty and Lola, this was 25 years ago.
Lola makes me think of her, or Charlie and Lola

Silvers11 · Today 18:41

rocklivia · Today 14:17

Lola is " walks like a woman but talks like a man" 😂

I'm old enough to remember that one too! Can't get past the image in my head the name conjures up

Spanglemum02 · Today 18:43

It's rude to comment on people's names. Plus none of those names are that uncommon.
I have an adopted child with an unusual name. It's nobody else's business.

MaddestGranny · Today 18:49

They are lovely names. I'm speaking here as a boomer / old fogey / rant-a-granny. The disparagers can go and pleasure themselves. Don't mind 'em.
Love your DGCs and their names. And let the rest go hang.

localnotail · Today 18:49

Hilarious - give your kids idiotic porn star names and then get upset people say its porn star names.

You missed a chance to call them Nana and Satin

Silverfoxette · Today 18:52

I think yabu to be furious, but it was really bad manners to make any comment about their names

mmmarmalade · Today 18:52

I think if you are going to boil over like a jam pot over trivial things like this - I'd rather you not be around children. My preferred was of dealing with things is to ignore the trivial stuff, use humour, etc. Really you'd be doing your self no good if you let a lot of trivial things bump your blood pressure up - it's really not worth it. I guess if your friends really get to know and like the kids it's never going to come up again and if they get on with them and like them then that's all that matters isn't it. I'm actually not keen on my grand daughters name but she's a great kid to be around and I love being with her so I don't care about the name.
